Generic Android TV and Google TV devices do not currently have broad official support for the Xbox TV app. The practical workaround is to open xbox.com/play in a compatible browser, pair a controller, and sign in. It can work, but compatibility and performance vary by device, browser, firmware, controller, and network.
Xbox officially lists selected Samsung and LG TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and VIDAA-powered TVs—not Android TV as a general TV-app platform. Do not confuse Xbox’s browser support for Android phones and tablets with official support for Android TV.
Does Xbox Game Pass work on Android TV?
Yes, it may work through a browser, but this is an unofficial Android TV configuration rather than a dedicated, Microsoft-documented Android TV setup.
Xbox currently directs Android phones and tablets to use cloud gaming in a web browser. Its official TV-app support covers selected Samsung and LG TVs, certain Amazon Fire TV devices, and selected VIDAA devices. Generic Android TV and Google TV are not listed as supported TV-app platforms on Xbox’s current TV support page.

That distinction matters. A television, Chromecast with Google TV, NVIDIA Shield TV, Xiaomi TV, Philips TV, TCL TV, Hisense TV, or other device can run Android-based software without supporting the same browser features, DRM, codecs, or controller APIs as an Android phone.
What you need
- An Android TV or Google TV device with current system firmware.
- A Microsoft account in a supported region.
- An eligible Xbox Game Pass plan, or an eligible free-to-play game.
- A compatible Bluetooth or USB controller.
- A compatible browser.
- A stable internet connection. Xbox specifies at least 10 Mbps for cloud gaming, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and says 20 Mbps or more is preferable for TV play. Ethernet is preferable where available.
- An optional USB keyboard or air mouse for sign-in and browser navigation.
Xbox’s current cloud-gaming page lists Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as plans that include unlimited cloud gaming. Selected free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Plan benefits, availability, and the cloud catalogue vary by region, plan, platform, and time. Not every Game Pass game is cloud playable, and some cloud-playable games require a separate purchase.
Check the live catalogue rather than relying on an old game list. Xbox also says that some games users own may be streamable, subject to eligibility and account restrictions.
The safest method: use a browser
- Update the device. Install available Android TV, Google Play, and firmware updates, then restart the television or streaming device.
- Install a browser. Check the device’s Google Play Store. Browser availability differs by manufacturer, and Xbox does not guarantee that Chrome, Edge, or any particular browser will be offered for Android TV.
- Pair the controller. Do this before launching a game. The pairing steps are below.
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming. In the browser, go to https://www.xbox.com/play.
- Sign in. Use the Microsoft account linked to the Game Pass subscription or eligible game.
- Choose a cloud-playable game. Use the cloud badge or Play control. Start with a free-to-play or less demanding title to test video quality, input response, and stability.
- Add a shortcut if available. Some browsers offer an Add to Home screen command. Xbox recommends this type of browser shortcut for easier access on browser-based devices.
- Test the complete experience. A successful sign-in is not proof that games will launch, and a successful launch is not proof that performance will be acceptable.
The expected working flow is: the Xbox site loads, sign-in succeeds, cloud-playable games appear, a selected game opens a stream, controller input is recognized, and the stream plays without repeated buffering or decoder errors.

If no suitable browser appears in the Play Store
Android TV’s Play Store shows only apps distributed for the device’s TV platform and hardware. You may be able to sideload a browser, but this is device-specific and unsupported by Xbox. Browser APKs from outside Google Play also introduce authenticity, security, update, and compatibility risks.
A sideloaded browser may install but fail to handle Microsoft sign-in, fullscreen video, gamepad input, DRM, or video decoding. It may also be difficult to launch without a separate shortcut or launcher. Treat this as an experiment, not a guaranteed installation method.
Should you sideload the Xbox or Game Pass app?
It is not the recommended solution. The current Xbox TV support information does not establish generic Android TV support for a phone Game Pass APK, an Xbox mobile APK, or an app intended for Fire TV.
A sideloaded app can fail because its architecture, Android version, screen orientation, DRM requirements, remote controls, or input assumptions do not match the TV. Common results include installation errors, an app missing from the launcher, incorrect aspect ratios, failed sign-in, broken controller input, and manual update problems. Avoid modified clients and unknown APK mirrors.

The browser route is closer to Xbox’s documented Android method and is easier to update because the service is delivered from the Xbox website. It is still not the same as official Android TV app support.
Pair an Xbox controller with Android TV
- Open Settings on Android TV or Google TV.
- Select Remotes & accessories, or the equivalent menu on your device.
- Choose Pair accessory.
- Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Select it when it appears on the TV.
- Test the D-pad, analogue sticks, triggers, Menu, and View buttons.
An Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth is the safest starting point. Recent Xbox controllers, compatible PlayStation controllers, and other supported Bluetooth gamepads may also work. Xbox directs users to its controller documentation for the verified list.
Pair the controller with the Android TV device—not merely with a nearby phone. A controller can pair successfully while the browser fails to expose it to the game. If Bluetooth drops inputs, try fresh batteries, update the controller firmware, reduce wireless interference, or use a wired USB controller if the device supports USB input. Touch controls exist for selected games, but they are generally impractical on a television.
Troubleshooting Android TV cloud gaming

A fast internet plan does not guarantee smooth play. Latency, Wi-Fi quality, location, household traffic, browser video decoding, and the TV’s chipset can matter as much as download speed. Xbox also notes that streamed games may have limitations involving resolution, audio, storage, companion apps, and accessories.

Device-specific expectations
- Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer: browser choices and remote-first navigation may be limited. An external keyboard or mouse can help.
- NVIDIA Shield TV: its stronger hardware and USB options may help, but it still does not become an officially supported Xbox TV-app platform.
- Built-in Android TV televisions: older or lower-powered chipsets may struggle with browser video decoding even when the site loads.
- Low-cost Android TV boxes: firmware, DRM, controller, and browser compatibility can be inconsistent.
- Manufacturer browsers: many are designed for ordinary web pages or video playback, not interactive cloud gaming.
Official alternatives that are usually easier
Supported Fire TV device
Xbox lists selected models, including the first-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Max, third-generation Fire TV Cube, second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Max, and second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K. Verify the exact model before buying; Xbox support does not apply to every Fire TV product.
Compatible Samsung or LG TV
Selected Samsung smart TVs from 2020 onward and selected monitors from 2022 onward are supported. Selected LG models with webOS 24 or newer are supported, including certain 2022 and 2023 models updated to software version 23.20.01 or higher. Model, firmware, region, and app availability still matter.
Laptop or mini-PC over HDMI
This is often the most reliable workaround: browsers, sign-in, controllers, and troubleshooting are easier, and there is no need to sideload TV software. The trade-off is extra hardware and a less appliance-like setup.
Phone or tablet connected to the TV
Xbox officially covers Android phones and tablets using a browser. HDMI output, USB-C video, and controller support depend on the particular device.

Xbox console
An Xbox provides the most complete TV-first experience, including local downloads and broader accessory support, but it costs considerably more than using existing hardware or a supported streaming device.
Final verdict
Android TV is worth trying when you already own the device, can install a browser that handles Xbox Cloud Gaming, and accept an unofficial setup with variable results. Pair a controller, use xbox.com/play, and test a cloud-playable game before investing in additional equipment.
If you want dependable remote control and fewer compatibility surprises, a specifically supported Fire TV device, Samsung or LG TV, laptop connected by HDMI, or Xbox console is the better choice. Do not buy an Android TV box or sideload an APK on the assumption that Android mobile support guarantees Android TV support.
