The Steam Deck OLED is the better all-around handheld for Steam users, while the original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is the better choice for Windows compatibility, PC Game Pass, VRR, and higher peak performance.

This comparison covers the 2023 ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, not the newer ROG Ally X. ASUS sells those as separate products: the Ally X has an 80Wh battery and different connectivity, so it should not be treated as the same device. See the original Ally specifications and Ally X specifications.

Steam Deck OLED vs ROG Ally: quick verdict

Choose this If you want
Steam Deck OLED A polished Steam-focused experience, OLED image quality, better handheld battery efficiency, trackpads, four rear buttons, and simple suspend/resume.
ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Windows, PC Game Pass, Epic, EA, Battle.net, broader anti-cheat support, 120Hz VRR, and higher performance when plugged in.

The Deck OLED wins as a handheld console. The Ally wins as a compact Windows gaming PC. Neither is universally better: your game library and tolerance for software setup matter more than benchmark numbers alone.

Which ROG Ally is this comparison about?

“ROG Ally” can refer to several different products. This article compares the 2023 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme with 512GB storage against the Steam Deck OLED. The original Ally was also sold with a weaker Z1 processor, which has six CPU cores and four GPU compute units rather than the Z1 Extreme’s eight CPU cores and 12 GPU compute units.

The ROG Ally X is a separate 2024 model. Its 80Wh battery, USB4-compatible connectivity, revised hardware, and other changes materially alter the battery and docking discussion. If you are comparing against the Ally X, do not use the original Ally’s battery or port conclusions.

Performance: the Ally is faster, but not in every useful sense

The ROG Ally Z1 Extreme has the stronger APU and a much higher power ceiling. At 20–30W, particularly when connected to its charger, it can deliver higher frame rates than the Steam Deck OLED in many demanding games. It is the better choice if maximum performance is your main priority.

The Deck OLED, however, targets a lower 1280×800 resolution and a 4–15W power range. That makes it easier to achieve stable 30, 40, or 60 FPS without consuming as much power. A game running at 800p on the Deck is not directly comparable with the same game at 1080p on the Ally: the Ally is rendering substantially more pixels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GamersNexus found that the Ally had a higher performance ceiling but also documented cases involving weaker frame-time consistency and low-percentile performance. Average FPS does not always predict which handheld feels smoother. Their comparison testing is useful context, but results vary by game, driver, power profile, and operating-system updates.

Realistic performance targets

  • 30 FPS: a sensible target for demanding modern games.
  • 40 FPS: an excellent compromise on the Deck OLED, especially with a 40Hz display setting.
  • 60 FPS: realistic for older, well-optimized, and less demanding games.
  • 90–120 FPS: more practical on the Ally in lighter games, helped by its 120Hz VRR display.

When comparing benchmarks, check the game version, graphics preset, resolution, upscaling, frame cap, TDP, drivers, battery state, and whether testing was performed on wall power. A plugged-in 30W Ally result should not be presented as a universal battery-powered advantage.

Display: OLED quality versus 1080p, 120Hz, and VRR

The Steam Deck OLED has the better image quality for most handheld gaming. Its 7.4-inch OLED panel offers deep blacks, excellent contrast, HDR support, a 16:10 aspect ratio, and refresh rates up to 90Hz. Valve specifies 600 nits for SDR, up to 1,000 nits peak HDR brightness, over 1,000,000:1 contrast, and 110% P3 color coverage. Dark games and cinematic scenes look especially good.

The Ally has a smaller 7-inch 1920×1080 LCD, but its advantages are significant. Its 120Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium VRR help smooth out changing frame rates. It is also sharper for desktop text and better suited to competitive games that can run at high frame rates.

1080p is not automatically better for demanding games. If performance or battery life matters more than sharpness, the Ally can be run at 720p or 900p. Conversely, the Deck’s 800p target is easier for its APU to sustain.

Battery life: Steam Deck OLED has the better handheld story

The Deck OLED has a 50Wh battery compared with 40Wh in the original Ally. Valve rates the OLED Deck for 3–12 hours of gameplay, a deliberately broad range that depends on the game, brightness, frame rate, TDP, resolution, and wireless activity.

The Ally can be faster, but its 20–30W performance modes consume more energy. At similar frame-rate targets, the Deck OLED generally provides the more practical unplugged experience. The Ally becomes more compelling when you usually play near an outlet or value performance more than runtime.

Do not trust a single battery-hours figure unless it identifies the game, brightness, refresh rate, resolution, frame cap, TDP, and whether the test was gaming or video playback.

Useful settings

  • Cap demanding Deck games at 30 or 40 FPS.
  • Use 40Hz or 60Hz rather than leaving the OLED at 90Hz for every game.
  • Try 15W on the Ally for a balance between performance and battery life.
  • Use 720p or 900p on the Ally when 1080p costs too much performance.
  • Choose a USB-C PD power bank only after checking its output wattage and cable.

SteamOS versus Windows 11

Why SteamOS feels better on a handheld

SteamOS 3 provides a controller-first interface built around the Steam library. Game installation, controller profiles, performance controls, screenshots, and suspend/resume are integrated into one environment. SteamOS also includes a KDE Plasma desktop mode for users who want more traditional PC access.

The Deck’s controls add capabilities that are unusual on a conventional gamepad. Two haptic trackpads and four assignable rear buttons are particularly helpful for strategy games, simulations, MMOs, older PC games, inventory shortcuts, radial menus, and mouse-heavy interfaces. Gyro aiming and configurable layouts further reduce the need for a keyboard and mouse.

Why Windows makes the Ally more versatile

Windows 11 gives the Ally native access to the Xbox app and PC Game Pass, as well as Epic Games Store, EA App, GOG, Battle.net, and other Windows launchers. It is also the safer choice for Windows-only productivity software and multiplayer games whose anti-cheat systems do not support Linux.

The cost is more desktop friction. Windows updates, launchers, pop-ups, login screens, scaling problems, keyboard entry, driver management, and inconsistent controller behavior can make the Ally feel more like a small laptop than a console. Armoury Crate reduces some of that friction, but it does not change the underlying Windows experience.

The accurate summary is simple: SteamOS is usually the cleaner handheld interface; Windows offers broader compatibility at the cost of more management.

Game compatibility and anti-cheat

Many Steam single-player games, indies, older PC games, and emulators work well on the Deck through Proton. But compatibility is game-specific, not binary. ProtonDB is a useful community-maintained resource, although it is not a guarantee: check ProtonDB before buying.

Usually straightforward on both devices

  • Steam single-player games with controller support.
  • Indie games and older PC titles.
  • Many games using common Windows APIs that work well through Proton.
  • Emulation, subject to legal ownership and configuration.

Check carefully before choosing SteamOS

  • Competitive multiplayer games.
  • Kernel-level anti-cheat.
  • Third-party launchers and DRM.
  • Games with unsupported middleware or video codecs.
  • Games with small text, mouse-heavy interfaces, or unreliable suspend behavior.

Windows is the safer choice if you regularly play PC Game Pass titles or games such as modern Call of Duty, Fortnite, EA multiplayer titles, Riot games, or Destiny 2. Support can change after developer, launcher, or anti-cheat updates, so treat current compatibility reports as time-sensitive. Windows Central discusses these limitations in its Steam Deck review coverage.

Controls, comfort, and portability

The Ally is lighter at approximately 608g and has a familiar Xbox-style control layout. Its two rear grip buttons, gyro, and hall-effect analog triggers suit conventional gamepad play. VRR can also make uneven frame rates feel smoother.

The Deck OLED weighs approximately 640g, but its larger grips, trackpads, capacitive sticks, and four rear buttons make it more adaptable to PC games. It is especially attractive if your library includes strategy, simulation, MMO, role-playing, or older titles designed for mouse and keyboard.

Comfort is personal. Consider hand size, grip angle, stick preference, D-pad feel, rear-button placement, and whether sessions last 20 minutes or several hours. Neither device is universally more comfortable.

Storage, upgrades, and original Ally reliability concerns

The Deck OLED is available with 512GB or 1TB NVMe storage, depending on the edition. The Ally Z1 Extreme commonly has a 512GB NVMe SSD. Both support storage expansion through microSD, but frequently played modern AAA games are better kept on the internal SSD when possible.

The original Ally uses a UHS-II microSD slot on its specification sheet, but GamersNexus reported serious concerns about microSD-reader failures in its testing and advised caution. This does not prove that every unit will fail, but it is an important used-market check. Test the reader before buying a second-hand Ally.

Steam Deck Oled 512 GB Handheld Gaming Console with 1280x800 HDR OLED display, Up to 90Hz Refresh Rate, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, With Carrying Case & 45W Power Supply
  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Before opening either handheld, back up saves and important files. SSD replacement requires careful handling and operating-system reinstallation, and may affect warranty coverage depending on the circumstances. Used Ally buyers should also check:

  • Whether the unit is the Z1 or Z1 Extreme model.
  • microSD-reader operation.
  • Battery health and charging behavior.
  • Stick drift and trigger operation.
  • USB-C port condition.
  • Screen damage and dead pixels.
  • Charger authenticity and wattage.
  • Warranty transferability.

Docked gaming and accessories

Both handhelds can connect to a dock, external display, keyboard, mouse, Bluetooth controller, and wired network adapter. The Deck supports DisplayPort over USB-C and lists output capabilities up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz. The Ally uses a USB-C port that combines display output with the ROG XG Mobile interface.

These are output specifications, not promises that either handheld can render modern games at 4K. The Ally’s performance advantage is more useful while plugged in, but its internal APU still has limits.

For a dock, check power delivery, HDMI or DisplayPort support, Ethernet, USB ports, and compatibility with the supplied charger. A suitable USB-C PD power bank should provide enough wattage to sustain gaming rather than merely slow battery drain. A microSD card is useful for inexpensive expansion, but it should not be your only copy of important data or your unquestioned primary storage on a used original Ally.

Who should buy the Steam Deck OLED?

  • You buy most games through Steam.
  • You want a console-like interface with minimal setup.
  • OLED contrast, HDR, and image quality matter more than 1080p resolution.
  • You value suspend/resume and handheld battery efficiency.
  • You want trackpads and four rear buttons for PC-style games.
  • You are willing to check compatibility for competitive multiplayer games.
  • You prefer not to manage Windows updates and multiple launchers.

Who should buy the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme?

  • You need native Windows and PC Game Pass.
  • You regularly use Epic, EA, Battle.net, GOG, or other Windows launchers.
  • You play Windows-only or anti-cheat-dependent multiplayer games.
  • You want higher performance at 20–30W.
  • You value 1080p, 120Hz, and FreeSync Premium VRR.
  • You want to use the handheld as a general Windows computer.
  • You are comfortable managing Windows, Armoury Crate, drivers, and power profiles.

What about the ROG Ally X?

Consider the Ally X instead of the original Ally if Windows compatibility is important but a 40Wh battery is unacceptable. ASUS lists an 80Wh battery, USB4, and a UHS-II microSD reader for the Ally X. It is a different product and should be evaluated on its own price, weight, controls, and performance rather than treated as a minor revision of the original Ally.

Final verdict

Buy the Steam Deck OLED for the best overall Steam-focused handheld experience. It has the superior screen, more console-like software, flexible controls, and generally stronger battery story.

Buy the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme if Windows compatibility is non-negotiable. It is the better tool for Game Pass, Windows launchers, anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer, 120Hz VRR, and higher plugged-in performance.

The right choice is therefore not “OLED versus LCD” or “more FPS versus fewer FPS.” It is whether you want a refined Steam console that runs many PC games, or a faster Windows PC that happens to fit in your hands.
