McDonald’s Pokémon promo cards are official products, but an individual card can still be counterfeit. The reliable approach is to identify the exact campaign, language, collector number and holo variant, then compare that same print with a documented genuine example. Check the back, cut edge, small print and foil together; no single home test proves authenticity.
For an expensive purchase or a card that remains doubtful, pause the transaction and use an experienced card specialist or a professional authentication service. Pokémon’s own announcement confirms that the 2023 promotion included 15 cards in four-card Happy Meal booster packs, while tournament documentation uses “MCD” for the McDonald’s Collection (Pokémon announcement).

Are McDonald’s Pokémon cards real?
Yes. McDonald’s promotions have included genuine Pokémon Trading Card Game products in multiple years and regions. The existence of a McDonald’s logo, a special foil or an unusual card number does not make a card fake.
What matters is whether the particular card matches a real print from the claimed campaign. The 2023 promotion advertised by The Pokémon Company International had 15 cards and four-card booster packs for participating Happy Meals. That description applies to that campaign, not to every McDonald’s collection. Older Western releases, later campaigns and Japanese promotions can use different numbering, languages and finishes.

The tournament documentation’s MCD abbreviation identifies McDonald’s Collection cards. It is useful context, but it is not a universal authentication mark: a genuine card from another year or region may have a different set symbol, numbering system or printed wording.
What should you identify before checking a card?
Start by defining exactly which print you are holding. A comparison is meaningful only when the reference and the offered card share the same campaign, region, language and finish.
Campaign or year
Read the card and seller’s description for a year or collection name. A Pikachu from the 2021 Western collection is not interchangeable with a Pikachu from a 2023 promotion, even if the character and artwork look similar. A number that is correct for one year can be wrong for another.
Country and language
Use a back design and text layout from the same language and market. Japanese McDonald’s promos follow their own numbering conventions; a Western reference can make a genuine Japanese card appear suspicious.
Set code, symbol and collector number
Record every printed identifier, including a set abbreviation, collection symbol and the number after the slash. Do not assume that an ordinary Pokémon set reprint uses the same number as its McDonald’s version.

Holo or non-holo variant
Note whether the card is holographic and exactly which areas shine. Later campaigns include non-holo versions, so the absence of foil is not automatically evidence of a fake. Conversely, a holo effect that belongs to a different variant is a mismatch worth investigating.

| Identity detail | What to record | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Year and collection name | Artwork, numbering and finish changed between releases. |
| Region | Country and language | Japanese and Western promos can use different backs and numbers. |
| Numbering | Set code, symbol and collector number | A normal-set number is not proof of a McDonald’s print. |
| Finish | Holo, non-holo and foil pattern | Non-holo cards exist in later campaigns; foil must match the same variant. |
Why doesn’t my McDonald’s card have a holo?
Some genuine McDonald’s cards are non-holo. Foil treatments differ by campaign and region, and later four-card-pack promotions are not required to use the same finish as older collections.
Check the exact card listing before treating a missing holo as a defect. Compare the card’s year, language, number and artwork to a reference for that print. If the reference is a 2021 holo and the offered card is a later non-holo release, the difference is expected. If both are supposed to be the same variant, compare the foil pattern under several angles of light rather than relying on one photograph.
Does the McDonald’s logo or set number look right?
There is no single logo placement, foil style or numbering rule shared by every McDonald’s Pokémon promotion. A logo that looks unusual in isolation may be correct for a different market; a familiar-looking logo does not prove genuineness.
Use an exact-print reference. For example, PSA’s record for the 2021 McDonald’s Collection Pikachu holo #25 identifies the year, collection, character, holo designation and number and provides front and back specimen images (PSA certificate record). That record documents that particular 2021 Pikachu. It does not establish the correct markings for a 2022, 2023, 2024 or Japanese Pikachu.

Compare the collector number, slash format, symbols, type line, attack text, copyright line and logo position against the same print. Look for differences in line breaks, letter spacing and punctuation, not just spelling. A single discrepancy is a reason to investigate; it is not, by itself, a final verdict.
How do you compare a card without damaging it?
Use a sequence of non-destructive checks. Keep the card clean and supported, and stop if handling could add a crease, scratch or fingerprint.
- Get clear images of both sides. For an online purchase, request a straight-on front and back photo, plus close-ups of the collector-number and foil areas. A picture of the Happy Meal or sealed packaging does not show the card’s printing.
- Compare the back. Match the blue tone, central artwork, borders, lettering and fine print to a genuine card in the same language. An incorrect back is significant, but a camera’s white balance can alter color, so compare under neutral lighting.
- Inspect the cut edge. Use a loupe or magnifier to examine the border and edge for uneven cutting, fuzzy layers or an edge pattern unlike the reference. Printing and cutting vary slightly, so judge the whole card rather than one tiny irregularity.
- Read the small print. Check the collector number, set symbol, type, weakness or resistance symbols, copyright line and text line breaks. Counterfeiters often reproduce the large artwork more convincingly than the tiny typography.
- Check the foil as a variant. Tilt the card through changing light and compare the location, texture and pattern of the shine with the same holo version. Do not compare a holo reference with a non-holo card.
- Use a light test only as a screen. A light comparison can reveal a difference between two otherwise matching cards, but it is not a stand-alone authentication method. Avoid intense heat or prolonged exposure that could damage the card.
- Weigh the evidence together. Weight, feel, gloss and a seemingly sealed pack are weak or inconclusive on their own. Do not tear, cut or otherwise destroy a collectible to inspect its core; a destructive “rip test” is not an appropriate recommendation.
These checks are complementary. A card that passes each one has a stronger case than a card that fails one, but none establishes genuineness by itself.
How should you use a genuine reference?
The best reference is a documented specimen of the same print, not a random card featuring the same Pokémon. PSA’s 2021 Pikachu record is useful because it states the exact collection, number and holo designation and shows both sides. Save the images and compare at the same scale when possible.
When buying online, ask the seller for unedited photos of the actual card. Request the front, back, edge, number and foil rather than relying on stock images or a photo of packaging. A seller’s statement that a card is genuine is not independent confirmation. If the seller refuses clear images or pressures you to pay before providing them, treat that as a transaction risk even though it does not prove the card is counterfeit.

Can a PSA slab have a real certification number and still be fake?
Yes. A number that resolves in PSA’s database is not conclusive because counterfeit holders and labels can copy a genuine certification number. PSA specifically warns about copied authentic numbers.
- Enter the number at PSA’s certification page (PSA cert lookup).
- Match the returned year, collection, card number, character and variety to the physical card.
- Compare available front and back images with the item offered, including artwork, centering, print defects and foil pattern.
- Inspect the holder and label for the features appropriate to that holder generation. PSA describes Lighthouse security features, a QR verification route and tamper-evident construction.
- Consider provenance: where the slab came from, whether the seller’s photographs show the exact certificate and whether the holder appears altered.
A successful lookup confirms that PSA has a record for that number; it does not prove that the object in front of you is the object PSA recorded.
Should you get a McDonald’s promo authenticated?
Escalate when the purchase has meaningful financial or sentimental consequences, the card fails to match an exact reference, or the evidence remains mixed after a careful inspection. An experienced trading-card shop can provide an informed second opinion, but ask what references and experience it uses.

PSA displayed a $59.99 per card Standard service price on its services page checked October 30, 2026; that is a service price, not a recommendation to spend that amount on every inexpensive promo. The Value service was marked temporarily paused at that check, and prices and availability can change, so confirm the current terms before submitting (PSA services).
Professional authentication is most defensible when the card’s value, rarity, provenance or consequences of a wrong purchase justify the fee and shipping risk. For a low-cost card, a reputable local specialist may be a more proportionate first step. Do not submit a card merely because it lacks a holo or has an unfamiliar number until the exact campaign has been identified.

Is Pokémon TCG Live proof that a card is genuine?
No. Digital-game availability is unrelated to physical authentication. Pokémon Support says McDonald’s Happy Meal promotion cards were unavailable in Pokémon TCG Online and therefore were not transferable to Pokémon TCG Live (Pokémon Support). A code, an absent code or the inability to add a promo to a digital collection cannot establish whether the cardboard card is real.
What mistakes lead collectors to a false verdict?
- Applying one year’s rules to every year. Numbering and finishes changed, and Japanese promotions are not interchangeable with Western references.
- Assuming every promo must be holo. Non-holo versions exist in later campaigns.
- Comparing with an ordinary-set reprint. The same Pokémon and artwork do not guarantee the same print specifications.
- Trusting one symptom. A color difference, a light result or a logo position should be weighed with the back, edge, text and foil.
- Using a certificate lookup as a guarantee. Copied PSA numbers can resolve to real records.
- Relying on packaging. A sealed-looking wrapper or packaging photograph does not reveal the card’s printing.
- Performing a destructive test. Tearing a card sacrifices the collectible and still is not a professional authentication method.
- Ignoring the transaction context. Missing photos, urgency and refusal to provide the actual card’s details increase risk even when they do not prove forgery.
What is known about the scale of McDonald’s promo collecting?
PSA’s 2025 Fraud Report search excerpt says that more than 285,000 authentic copies of the 2025 Japanese McDonald’s promo Pikachu were graded in 2025 (PSA Fraud Report PDF). That is a carefully attributed count of graded authentic copies for a Japanese 2025 promo. It is not a counterfeit rate and says nothing about the authenticity of a particular Western card.

- Pause. Do not let a low price or a seller’s deadline replace verification.
- Identify. Write down year, region, language, set code, collector number and holo status.
- Reference. Find a documented same-print example, such as a certificate record with clear images.
- Request. Obtain front, back, edge, number and foil photos of the exact card.
- Inspect. Compare back, cut, small print and foil under suitable light without damaging the card.
- Escalate. If evidence conflicts or the stakes are high, ask a specialist or submit for professional authentication.
- Document. Keep the listing, seller messages, photos and certificate details in case the transaction must be disputed.
The practical verdict is comparative, not cosmetic: a McDonald’s logo can belong to a real promotion, but only a match to the correct year, language, number and variant supports authenticity. When those details cannot be reconciled, do not treat the card as genuine merely because one home test or database lookup looks reassuring.
How was this verification approach selected?
The checks above prioritize the distinctions that vary between real McDonald’s prints—campaign, region, language, numbering and holo treatment—then use independent visual evidence from the same print. They also separate low-cost comparative screening from professional authentication, whose cost and value depend on the transaction and the card’s consequences.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare a McDonald’s Pikachu with any other Pikachu card?
No. Character and artwork alone are not enough. Use a reference from the same McDonald’s campaign, language, collector number and holo or non-holo variant; an ordinary-set Pikachu can have different numbering, back printing and finish.
What photos should I request before buying one online?
Ask for straight-on photos of the actual card’s front and back, plus close-ups of the collector number, symbols, edge and foil area. If it is graded, request the complete holder and label so the certificate record and the physical card can be compared.
Does a sealed Happy Meal package prove the card inside is authentic?
No. Packaging can support provenance, but it does not let you inspect the card’s back, small print, cut or foil. Treat a package photo as supporting context and still seek card-level evidence when the purchase matters.
What should I do if every home check looks right but I am still unsure?
Do not convert uncertainty into a purchase decision. Keep the card undamaged, ask a knowledgeable card shop for an opinion, or use a professional authentication service when the value or consequences justify its cost.
