Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The safest way to buy a PSA-graded card online is to combine a PSA certification lookup with a close inspection of the exact slab, card and seller. Enter the certification number from the listing in PSA Cert Verification or scan the label in the PSA App, then confirm that the returned year, set, card number, subject and grade match the photographs. A matching number is necessary evidence, but it is not proof: criminals can copy real PSA numbers onto counterfeit labels.
Ask for sharp photos of the front, back, label, corners and sealed edges; check for signs that the holder was opened or resealed; review the seller’s history, returns and payment protection; and, where eligible, use eBay Authenticity Guarantee. Keep the listing and all verification evidence until the transaction is complete.

What a PSA certification check can—and cannot—tell you
PSA’s certification database is the first check because it ties a number to a grading record. Copy the number exactly as printed on the slab, including every digit, and search it in PSA Cert Verification. You can also scan the label or QR code with the PSA App when the listing provides a clear enough image.
The result should identify the same:
- Year or release designation
- Set or issue name
- Card number
- Subject, player, character or title
- Grade
- Any available images or additional record details
Compare every returned field with the card shown in the seller’s photographs. A number that resolves to a different card, variation, grade or year is a stop signal, even if the label itself looks convincing.

PSA states on its Cert Verification page that verification of certification numbers does not eliminate risk. The company also warns that, although uncommon, criminals use actual certification numbers taken from public sources on counterfeit grading inserts. A genuine number can therefore appear on a fake slab. The lookup confirms that a record exists; it does not confirm that the physical holder in the listing is the holder PSA issued for that record.
Do not treat a database result as a guarantee that an online listing is genuine. The identity of the seller, the physical construction of the holder, the label and the card still require separate checks.
Step 1: Capture and verify the number before you negotiate
Copy the number from the actual listing
Use the seller’s own slab photograph rather than a catalog image or a picture found elsewhere. Zoom in until the digits are unambiguous. If one digit is hidden by glare, ask the seller for a straight-on image instead of guessing.
Run the lookup and record the result
- Open PSA Cert Verification.
- Enter the certification number exactly as printed.
- Read the returned year, set, card number, subject and grade.
- Open any image or detail supplied with the record.
- Save a screenshot or PDF showing the result and the date of the check.
If you use the PSA App, scan the label or QR code and save the same information. A QR scan that merely opens a page is not enough; read the underlying record and compare it with the listing.
Match the record to the photographed card
Look for details that distinguish variants: first-edition or unlimited markings, language, parallel or promo symbols, card number suffixes, foil patterns and error corrections. Compare the grade printed on the slab with the grade in the PSA result. Do not accept a seller’s statement that the database is outdated without independent confirmation from PSA.

Step 2: Inspect the slab, label and card in high-resolution photographs
Request new, high-resolution photographs if the listing does not show the areas below. Stock images, cropped pictures and reflections that hide the edges do not let you evaluate the holder.
Label and printing
- Compare the label layout, spacing and alignment with known genuine PSA examples from the same period.
- Inspect font shapes, weight, baseline alignment and punctuation at full resolution.
- Look for fuzzy edges, color banding, pixelation, uneven ink density or text that appears pasted into a different background.
- Examine foil and security elements for the expected pattern, sharpness and placement.
- Check that the certification number on the label is identical to the number returned by PSA.
One visual difference is not automatically proof of fraud: PSA labels and security features can change over time. The relevant comparison is with genuine holders from the same label generation, and the database record must agree with the physical label.

- Inspect all four edges for cracks, stress marks, cloudy plastic or an uneven sonic weld.
- Look for a gap between the two halves, a lifted corner or a seam that changes width along the edge.
- Check for glue residue, excess adhesive, scratches around the perimeter or plastic that looks melted and reformed.
- Examine the label for lifting, bubbles, wrinkles, cut edges or adhesive marks.
- Compare the front and back halves for mismatched tint, thickness or alignment.
A counterfeit can contain a real card and a copied label, while a genuine slab can have ordinary scuffs from handling. Concentrate on combinations of anomalies rather than a single scratch.
Card details inside the holder
Use the photos to compare the card’s front and back with a trusted scan of the same issue. Check borders, centering, color registration, gloss, texture, holograms, serial numbering and printing defects. A card that does not match the PSA record’s subject or issue is not rescued by a genuine-looking case.
For close inspection, a 10x LED jeweler’s loupe can help you examine label print, foil and cardstock in photographs or in person. It is an inspection aid, not an authentication device: it cannot establish that PSA made the holder or that the card is genuine.

How to tell whether a PSA case may have been opened and resealed
No single photograph can prove that a holder was never opened. The goal is to identify physical evidence that warrants refusal, an in-person inspection or an intermediary authentication.
Recommended Free Tools
| Area | Normal evidence to seek | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed edge | Continuous, even weld with consistent texture | Cloudy sections, ridges, gaps, melted-looking plastic or a seam that stops abruptly |
| Corners | Uniformly joined corners without fresh tool marks | Cracks, whitening, pry marks, mismatched halves or a corner that sits proud |
| Label | Flat, centered label with clean edges | Lifted edge, bubbles, wrinkles, glue, trimming or a label that is not square |
| Plastic surface | Wear consistent with normal storage and shipping | Fresh scratches concentrated around the seam, solvent haze or residue |
| Card position | Card sits consistently in the inner well | Unexpected movement, debris, altered spacing or a card orientation unlike genuine examples |
Ask the seller to photograph each edge at an angle and under diffuse light. A flashlight aimed directly at the slab can create glare that conceals a seam. Do not ask the seller to open, flex or heat the holder; those actions can damage a genuine slab and destroy evidence.
Seller and listing checks that reduce risk
Identity and transaction history
- Review feedback for completed trading-card sales, not only the seller’s overall score.
- Check how long the account has sold collectibles and whether the photographs and descriptions are consistent across listings.
- Look for a physical business identity, clear contact information and a stated return process.
Photos, price and pressure
- Refusal to provide a certification lookup or additional photographs is a material warning sign.
- Stock photos prevent you from matching the number and should be treated as insufficient for a high-value purchase.
- A price far below comparable completed sales can indicate a counterfeit, a damaged item or a bait listing. Compare the same card, grade, language and variant rather than a broad search result.
- Pressure to pay immediately, move the conversation off-platform or use an unprotected payment method removes safeguards.
Returns and payment protection
Read the listing’s return terms before paying. Confirm the deadline, who pays return shipping, whether the seller accepts a suspected counterfeit claim and which payment method provides a dispute process. Keep the transaction on the marketplace when possible; off-platform messages and payments make the record harder to prove.
When eBay Authenticity Guarantee helps
Eligible eBay trading-card listings can add an independent inspection between the seller and buyer. eBay says PSA experts authenticate each graded case and label; no regrading is performed. If the authenticator cannot verify authenticity or the item is inconsistent with its listing, eBay says the buyer receives a full refund to the original payment method.
This lowers transaction risk, but it is not a universal guarantee. Eligibility depends on the current country, category, listing format and price thresholds. Confirm that the authenticity badge appears on the specific listing and read the current program terms for your region before relying on it. A listing outside the program does not imply fraud; it simply lacks that inspection step.

PSA’s 2026 eBay Canada program copy cites more than 65 million items certified since 1991. That figure describes PSA’s overall certification history, not the authenticity of an individual slab and not the probability that a particular listing will pass inspection.
The program also has exclusions. PSA’s guarantee language identifies holders or labels showing tampering or fraud and certificates deactivated before the latest purchase among situations that can affect coverage. Preserve the listing and purchase record so you can establish when and how you bought the item.
Compare purchase options before choosing a listing
Use the following decision framework to compare two or more listings. A low price should not outweigh a missing inspection, weak documentation or an unprotected payment route.
| Factor | Strong position | Weak position | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent inspection | Eligible marketplace authentication with a visible program badge | No intermediary and no opportunity for in-person inspection | Prefer the inspected route for expensive cards; otherwise demand better evidence and protection |
| Seller track record | Established card seller with relevant, consistent feedback | New account, unrelated history or evasive answers | Ask specific questions and verify completed-sale history |
| Photo quality | Unique, sharp front, back, label, corners and edges | Stock, low-resolution or glare-obscured images | Request additional images before committing |
| Returns and payment | Clear returns and a payment method with dispute protection | Final sale, cash transfer or pressure to leave the platform | Choose the protected transaction or walk away |
| Geography and eligibility | Program and returns apply in your country | Cross-border terms, taxes or authentication exclusions are unclear | Read the regional policy and calculate the full cost |
| Total price | Within the range of comparable sales for the same card and grade | Far below the market without a documented reason | Investigate condition, variant and provenance before treating it as a bargain |
For a high-value purchase, require all six factors to be acceptable. For a low-value card, you may accept less documentation, but the certification result must still match the exact card and grade.

- The complete listing page, including description, price, seller name and any authenticity badge
- Original photographs and every image the seller sends later
- Your PSA Cert Verification result or PSA App record, with the date checked
- Messages in which the seller identifies the card, grade or condition
- Payment confirmation, invoice, tracking and delivery photographs
- Packaging photographs taken before opening and the slab’s condition on arrival
Keep the slab, card and packaging in their received condition while you evaluate a problem. Do not attempt to pry apart the holder, remove the label, clean the plastic with solvents or send it to an unrelated repair service.
If the card looks suspicious after purchase
- Stop the transaction’s normal use and photograph the slab, label, seams, packaging and card from multiple angles.
- Run the certification number again and save the current result. Note any change, mismatch or deactivation.
- Contact the marketplace through the order record and open the appropriate authenticity, item-not-as-described or counterfeit claim.
- Contact PSA through its official customer channels with the certification number and photographs. Use the contact details on PSA’s current website or the correspondence supplied with the transaction rather than an address sent by the seller.
- Notify your payment provider within its dispute deadline if the marketplace remedy is unavailable or insufficient.
- Keep all originals and send copies when possible. Do not return the item until the marketplace or payment provider gives documented instructions.
A certificate that has been deactivated, a label that no longer matches the record or physical tampering should be reported promptly. The timing of the purchase matters for policy coverage, so preserve the original listing and date.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping at a valid number: copied numbers are the central weakness of a database-only check.
- Checking only the front: resealing evidence and label problems often appear on the back or edges.
- Using a generic card search: a similar subject or grade is not the same issue, variant or certification record.
- Assuming every label variation is fake: compare with genuine examples from the same PSA label generation before judging a design difference.
- Relying on a loupe or app as a verdict: tools reveal details but do not replace PSA records, physical comparison and transaction protections.
- Ignoring policy limits: authentication programs have geography, category, price and tampering exclusions.
- Losing the evidence: a deleted listing or missing message can make a legitimate claim much harder to establish.
A practical pass-or-walk-away checklist
- The certification number came from the actual slab in the listing.
- PSA’s returned year, set, card number, subject and grade match the photographed card.
- The seller supplied unique, high-resolution images of the label, front, back, corners and all sealed edges.
- There is no unexplained gap, cloudy weld, lifted label, glue, pry mark or resealing evidence.
- The card’s printing, symbols, foil, texture and numbering match the stated issue.
- The seller has relevant history, answers questions and offers clear returns.
- The payment route preserves dispute protection.
- Any eBay Authenticity Guarantee eligibility is confirmed for this listing and your region.
- You saved the listing, certification result, messages and payment record.
If any high-value item fails the certification match, physical inspection or transaction-protection check, walk away. No discount compensates for a slab whose identity cannot be established.

Official PSA and eBay guidance explains the checks and program rules but does not provide a published percentage showing how many counterfeit slabs evade online checks. Treat claims about a precise failure rate with skepticism unless they identify a verifiable, current methodology. The defensible conclusion is procedural: layered checks reduce exposure, while no online lookup alone can guarantee the physical item.
