For a first watch, use release order: Creature Commandos season 1, Superman, Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl, Lanterns, then Clayface. That sequence follows the way James Gunn’s shared DC Universe has been presented and protects the intended reveals. A chronological run is possible, but it requires splitting Lanterns between its 2016-set and 2026-set material and moving Clayface ahead of Creature Commandos. The six titles below are the current mainline list through November 2026; older DCEU movies, The Batman and the Joker films are separate viewing tracks.

What is the current DC Universe release order?
The current James Gunn-led DCU has six confirmed mainline projects in release order. This is the recommended route for a new viewer because it preserves the order of introductions, callbacks and reveals. Gunn has said, as reported by Tom’s Guide, that the projects are “basically as the movies and shows come out,” while acknowledging that several contain flashbacks.

- Creature Commandos — season 1 (2024): The animated season opened the current mainline. It premiered on December 5, 2024.
- Superman (2025): The first feature in this six-project sequence follows the opening series entry.
- Peacemaker — season 2 (2025): The second season arrived after Superman, premiering on August 21, 2025.
- Supergirl (2026): This feature is the next confirmed release in the mainline order.
- Lanterns (2026): The series premiered on August 16, 2026. Its story jumps between two periods, but you should still watch the released series in its normal episode order on a first pass.
- Clayface (2026): The film is the sixth confirmed entry in the current release-order guide, even though its events take place earlier than some of the other projects.
The years identify the current release schedule rather than a claim that every story occurs in that same year. Dates and future placement can change, so check the latest official listing when a delayed or rescheduled project is involved.
Why release order is the safer default
Release order is simpler because you never have to decide which individual flashback belongs before another title. It also offers the strongest spoiler control: information was revealed to audiences in this sequence, so a chronological rearrangement can expose context earlier than the creators intended. For a first-time viewer, start with Creature Commandos and continue straight through the six entries.

What is the DCU story or chronological order?
Chronological viewing places the known time periods inside the fictional timeline rather than following premiere dates. Because Lanterns spans two eras and Clayface has an undated prequel position, this is a guided sequence, not a scene-by-scene calendar.
| Chronological position | Material to watch | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lanterns — 2016-set scenes | These scenes are the earliest specifically identified period in the current timeline. |
| 2 | Clayface | The film is placed as an undated prequel before Creature Commandos; no exact in-universe date is assigned. |
| 3 | Creature Commandos — season 1 | The opening released season follows the Clayface prequel placement in this chronology. |
| 4 | Superman | The feature follows Creature Commandos in the available story timeline. |
| 5 | Peacemaker — season 2 | The second season comes after Superman chronologically. |
| 6 | Supergirl | The feature follows Peacemaker season 2 in the current timeline guide. |
| 7 | Lanterns — 2026-set scenes | The later-period scenes complete the currently identified Lanterns timeline. |
Do not treat this table as an instruction to pause a season every time it cuts to another year. The available timeline identifies periods within Lanterns, but it does not publish a complete episode-by-episode or scene-by-scene ordering. Watch the series as released unless an official guide supplies more granular instructions.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy is Lanterns split between 2016 and 2026?
Lanterns contains story material set in two periods: scenes in 2016 and scenes in 2026. That is why it appears twice in the chronological list, while it appears only once in release order.
The 2016 material belongs at the front of a strict timeline, before the undated Clayface prequel. The 2026 material belongs at the end, after Supergirl. Since no exact dates are assigned to every project and no authoritative scene map is available, manually extracting every flashback is more likely to create confusion than clarity. A first-time viewer should therefore watch all of Lanterns in its released episode sequence; a rewatcher can use the split only as a broad chronology.
Should I watch The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 first?
Only if you want transitional context. The Suicide Squad (2021) followed by Peacemaker season 1 can be watched before Creature Commandos as an optional prologue, but those titles are not part of the current six-project mainline list.

The Suicide Squad (2021)
This film supplies background for elements that later DCU stories remember or reference. It is useful for completionists and for viewers who want to see the earlier screen history of characters carried into the new continuity. If you are buying a disc, verify the edition, region and retailer stock for “The Suicide Squad 2021 Blu-ray”; availability and program eligibility vary.
Peacemaker season 1
The first season provides the direct bridge from The Suicide Squad to later material. It is optional rather than mandatory before Superman or the six-project run. The documented relationship is broad: these stories are remembered by the newer DCU, but there is no established precise placement for them against the 2016 scenes in Lanterns. Do not insert them into that part of the timeline as if an exact date had been confirmed.
Blue Beetle
Blue Beetle is also best treated as optional. Some characters or story elements may transfer into the new DCU, but the current guide does not establish the film as a required entry in the six-project sequence. Watch it separately if you want additional DC material, not because the mainline order requires it.
Are The Batman and Joker part of this DC Universe?
No. The Batman, Joker (2019) and Joker: Folie à Deux are Elseworlds or otherwise separate continuities, not entries in the James Gunn-led mainline order.
Those films can be watched independently of the six-project DCU. Within the Joker continuity, watch Joker before Joker: Folie à Deux. The separation is important: combining every DC-branded movie into one list produces a chronology that the current continuity guides do not support.

Where do the older DCEU movies fit?
They belong in a separate DCEU guide rather than being silently mixed into this one. The earlier run includes titles such as Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman and The Flash. Their release and story orders answer a different continuity question.
Some performers, characters or concepts can reappear across eras, but a familiar name is not proof that every earlier film is required homework. Keep the old DCEU, the current DCU and the Elseworlds projects as clearly labeled tracks.
Which viewing order should you choose?
Choose based on what you value rather than treating one route as universally mandatory.
- Choose release order for simplicity: It is the six-title sequence audiences received, with no need to classify flashbacks while watching.
- Choose release order for spoiler control: It preserves the timing of reveals and avoids learning a project’s later context too early.
- Choose story order for chronological fidelity: It moves the 2016 Lanterns material to the front, places Clayface before Creature Commandos, and returns to the 2026 Lanterns material at the end.
- Choose the completionist route for continuity history: Add The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 before the mainline sequence, understanding that they remain optional transitional context.
- Choose continuity purity: Leave The Batman, the Joker films, Blue Beetle and the older DCEU titles outside the six-project binge unless you deliberately want a separate track.
How should I plan a first watch?
A simple plan avoids most timeline disputes and keeps optional material from becoming a prerequisite.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start with the six-project release route. Begin with Creature Commandos season 1 and move forward by premiere order through Clayface.
- Decide whether you want the transition stories. If references to earlier characters matter to you, watch The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 before the mainline. Otherwise, skip them without fear of breaking the core sequence.
- Leave the split timeline for a rewatch. On a second pass, place the 2016 Lanterns scenes first and the 2026 scenes last, while keeping in mind that the exact internal cut points are not published.
- Keep separate continuities in separate lists. Label the DCEU, the current DCU and Elseworlds titles independently in your watch tracker.
- Check access immediately before viewing. Streaming rights, platform names and release schedules vary by territory and can change after this guide is published.
Where can I stream the current DCU projects?
Availability is territory-specific, so there is no reliable single platform statement for every title. The confirmed access notes identify Max/HBO Max availability for Creature Commandos and Peacemaker season 2 in the relevant listings, but that should not be generalized to every project or country.

Before starting, search the title in your local service catalog and confirm whether the listing is a subscription stream, a rental or a purchase. A show can move services while its place in the DCU order remains unchanged. For physical completionists, verify the region and edition of The Suicide Squad before ordering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How was this order determined?
The release list uses the six projects with confirmed placement in the current mainline guide through November 2026. The chronological list follows the documented 2016 and 2026 Lanterns periods, the pre-release placement of Clayface, and the established sequence of the remaining projects. Optional titles are labeled separately because their relationship to the new continuity is transitional or unresolved, not because they are interchangeable with the six mainline entries.
FAQ
Do I need to know the old DCEU before starting Superman?
No. The current six-project route is designed as its own mainline sequence. Earlier DCEU knowledge may add context for optional transitional stories, but it is not a stated prerequisite for beginning with Creature Commandos or continuing to Superman.

Can I watch only the Lanterns scenes set in 2016 first?
There is no published scene-level viewing map that reliably tells you where to pause and resume. Unless an official episode guide supplies those cut points, watch the episodes in their released order and use the 2016/2026 split only as a broad rewatch framework.
Will Blue Beetle eventually become mandatory?
Its future relationship to the DCU has not been established as a requirement in the current order. It is safe to treat the film as an optional standalone watch until an official continuity guide assigns it a mainline position.

Why might a streaming service show a different order?
Services can sort by release date, season, region or licensing package rather than by fictional chronology. Use the title sequence in this guide as your continuity reference, then verify the local listing and season labels before pressing play.
Should I wait for more DCU projects before choosing an order?
You can start with the six confirmed entries now; a future release may expand or revise the guide without changing what those existing projects are. Recheck dates and placement after major schedule announcements, especially for unreleased or newly delayed titles.
