To wrap text around a picture in Word, select the picture, open Layout Options (or choose Picture Format > Wrap Text), and select a wrapping mode. Square is the best general-purpose choice; Tight or Through can follow the subject’s outline more closely. Then choose whether the picture should Move with text or stay at a page location with Fix position on page.
The important distinction is whether Word treats the picture as a character in a paragraph or as a floating, anchored object. Once you understand that distinction, you can control the text boundary, spacing, layer order, and movement without fighting the document layout.

The basic workflow is the same in current desktop editions of Word. Insert the image, select it, choose a wrap mode, and then adjust its position. The controls are available from the small Layout Options button beside the selected picture or from the ribbon.
- Insert the picture. Place the cursor where you want the image, use Word’s picture-insertion command, and select the file.
- Select the picture. The Layout Options button appears beside it. If it does not, click the image once.
- Open the wrapping controls. Choose Layout Options, or use Picture Format > Wrap Text on the ribbon.
- Choose a mode. Select Square for a rectangular text boundary, Tight or Through for closer shape following, Top and Bottom for no side wrapping, or a layering option such as Behind Text.
- Place the picture. Drag it to a new location. For exact alignment or coordinates, select More Layout Options and use the alignment and absolute or relative position controls.
Word applies the setting immediately. If the picture jumps when you edit nearby paragraphs, that is a movement or anchor setting rather than a failure of the wrap command.

Which Word wrap option should I choose?
Choose the mode according to the boundary you want Word to reserve and whether the picture should behave like text or float independently.
| Wrap mode | Text boundary | Best use | Object behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| In Line with Text | No side wrap; the image occupies a character-sized position in the paragraph | Images that should remain part of the sentence or move predictably with a paragraph | Inline object |
| Square | Rectangular boundary around the image | Most documents, diagrams, screenshots, and photos with a simple rectangular footprint | Floating and anchored |
| Tight | Follows the visible subject more closely | People, objects, or illustrations with open space around the subject | Floating and anchored; wrap points can be edited |
| Through | Close-following boundary that can allow text into suitable transparent or open areas | Detailed cutouts and irregular artwork when Tight is not precise enough | Floating and anchored; available through advanced wrap controls |
| Top and Bottom | Text stays above and below the picture | Large illustrations or figures that should have clear horizontal separation | Floating and anchored |
| Behind Text | Text flows over the picture | Watermarks or background artwork | Layered behind text |
| In Front of Text | The picture covers text beneath it | Overlays, callouts, or objects that must remain visually dominant | Layered in front of text |
Square is usually the least surprising starting point. Switch to Tight or Through only when the rectangular edge leaves too much empty space or the design requires an irregular contour.

What is the difference between an inline and a floating picture?
An inline picture is treated as a character in a paragraph. A floating picture is a separate object attached to a paragraph by an anchor, so text can flow around it and you can position it independently.
In Line with Text
With In Line with Text, Word places the image in the text line as if it were a very large character. Adding or deleting text moves the picture with that paragraph position. Inline placement is often easiest for a sequence of images, screenshots that must stay in reading order, or documents where predictable reflow matters more than side-by-side design.
Floating wrap modes
Square, Tight, Through, Top and Bottom, Behind Text, and In Front of Text create floating pictures. A floating picture is anchored to a paragraph; the anchor shows which paragraph owns the object. Changing the paragraph’s position can therefore affect the picture even when the image itself has not been moved.
Floating objects can be positioned independently and, unlike inline objects, can be multi-selected and grouped with other floating objects. If a command for grouping is unavailable, changing the picture from In Line with Text to a floating mode usually resolves that limitation.

How do “Move with text” and “Fix position on page” work?
These settings determine whether edits to surrounding paragraphs carry the picture with them or leave it at a page location.
Use Move with text when the picture belongs to a paragraph
Choose a floating mode such as Square, then select Move with text in the layout controls. The picture follows the paragraph to which it is anchored as text is inserted, removed, or reflowed. This is appropriate for a figure that should remain beside the explanation that introduces it.
Use Fix position on page for a stationary design element
Choose a floating mode, often In Front of Text for an overlay, and select Fix position on page. Word keeps the picture at its page location while nearby text changes. This is useful for a watermark, a margin illustration, or a decorative element that should not drift when paragraphs expand.
Fixing the page position does not remove the anchor. The picture remains associated with a paragraph, so inspect the anchor if the object appears on an unexpected page or becomes difficult to select.

Use Tight or Through, then refine the boundary with Edit Wrap Points. These are the modes intended for close shape-following wraps.
- Select the picture and choose Wrap Text > Tight (or Through when that mode is available in the advanced options).
- Open Wrap Text > Edit Wrap Points. Word displays a red boundary with black editing points.
- Drag black points closer to the subject to reduce empty space, or farther away to keep text from crowding the image.
- Drag the red outline to add or reshape points where the contour needs more control.
- Click outside the image when the boundary follows the subject as desired.
Wrap points control where text may travel; they do not crop or erase pixels from the picture. If the image contains a large background, a closer wrap can make the page look cleaner, but an overly tight contour can create awkward narrow lines and reduce readability.

With Square or Top and Bottom, editing points changes the distance between text and the object rather than turning the rectangle into a true subject-shaped boundary. Use Tight or Through when the shape itself must change.
How do I keep a picture in one spot while text changes?
Set the picture to a floating wrap mode, choose Fix position on page, and then use More Layout Options for precise alignment or absolute and relative positioning.
- Select the picture and open Layout Options.
- Choose Square, Tight, Top and Bottom, or another floating mode.
- Select Fix position on page.
- Open More Layout Options.
- Set the required horizontal or vertical alignment, or enter an absolute or relative position.
Use this arrangement only when a fixed page location is intentional. A picture fixed beside a paragraph can remain visually separated from the words that describe it after a page break or a large edit.
Why will not my picture move, group, or select?
Most picture-placement problems come from the current wrap mode, the anchor, or another object covering the image.
The picture will not move freely
Check whether it is In Line with Text. Inline pictures move as part of the paragraph and do not have the same free-positioning behavior as floating objects. Change to Square or another floating mode before dragging it around the page.
The picture keeps moving after I edit text
Open the layout controls and check whether Move with text is selected. If the picture should stay at a page coordinate, switch to Fix position on page. Also inspect the anchor to confirm that the object is attached to the intended paragraph.

I cannot group the picture with another object
Inline objects cannot be multi-selected or grouped like floating objects. Convert the picture to a floating wrap mode, then select it together with the other floating object.
I cannot click the picture
The image may be behind another object. Open Home > Select > Selection Pane and choose the picture from the list. This is especially useful for objects using Behind Text or layered page designs.
The text is too close to the picture
Use Edit Wrap Points for Tight or Through, or adjust the spacing in the advanced layout controls. With Square and Top and Bottom, wrap-point edits change the distance around the existing boundary rather than creating a new contour.

Word for the web retains wrapping and fixed-position settings created in desktop Word, but it offers fewer controls for changing them. If a picture was given a complex wrap, custom wrap points, or a fixed position on the desktop, open the document in the desktop application when you need to revise that layout.

- Use Square for a standard figure beside explanatory text.
- Switch to Tight or Through only when the subject outline improves the composition.
- Decide immediately whether the object should Move with text or use Fix position on page.
- Check the anchor after placing a floating picture.
- Use More Layout Options for alignment or exact relative and absolute positioning instead of repeated manual dragging.
- Open the Selection Pane when overlapping objects make selection unreliable.
After a major edit, scan each page for orphaned pictures, text trapped behind a layer, and anchors attached to the wrong paragraph. Correcting the movement setting at the start is faster than repositioning every image after the document has changed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the wrap mode change the picture’s size?
No. Wrap Text changes how Word reserves space and layers text around the object; it does not resize the image. Resize the picture separately if its dimensions need to change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does a picture have a small anchor symbol?
The anchor identifies the paragraph to which a floating picture is attached. If the picture appears to move unexpectedly, selecting the correct paragraph and reviewing the movement setting usually explains the relationship.
Can I make text flow through transparent parts of an image?
Try the Through mode and then refine the boundary with Edit Wrap Points. The result depends on how closely you define the wrap outline; the command does not alter the image’s transparency or pixels.
What should I do if a wrapped picture looks correct on desktop but not while editing online?
Word for the web preserves many desktop layout settings but exposes fewer editing controls. Reopen the document in desktop Word to change custom wrap points, complex positioning, or other advanced layout settings.
