Survival horror uses exploration to make you weigh danger: search for a way forward or useful supplies while deciding whether a threat is worth confronting. Both genres can feature interconnected maps, puzzles, backtracking, and combat; the key difference is what those systems make you think about.
What separates the genres?
A useful shorthand is the question each genre tends to put in front of you. In a Metroidvania, it is often, “Where can I go now, and what ability opens the next route?” In survival horror, it is more often, “Can I survive this space, and is fighting worth the risk or resources?” These are tendencies, not rules every game must follow.

Nintendo describes Metroid as exploratory action in a maze-like world where new items and weapons expand the areas a player can access and reveal alternate routes. That makes navigation and progression closely linked: an obstacle that once blocked a path may become passable after you acquire a new capability. Nintendo also says map reading is part of the intended play.
Survival horror instead makes the search itself part of the danger. In a 2016 interview about Resident Evil 7, director Koshi Nakanishi described the series’ pillars as “fear and horror, exploration of the environment, puzzle-solving elements, resource management, and combat against enemies.” PlayStation’s regional overview of Resident Evil similarly describes the original game as combining action, exploration, resource management, and an aim to terrify players.

How exploration pays off
| Exploration question | Metroidvania tendency | Survival-horror tendency |
|---|---|---|
| What does searching reveal? | New paths, alternate routes, and places made reachable by acquired abilities or items. | Routes, story details, supplies, and puzzle clues—often while exposing the player to threats. |
| Why return to an earlier area? | A newly gained ability may let you pass an obstacle or reach a previously inaccessible branch. | A return may be needed to navigate a connected location, solve a problem, or manage a dangerous journey; the reason varies by game. |
| What does the map ask of you? | Notice connections and remember places that may become reachable later. | Understand the layout and make decisions about moving through spaces where threats or scarce supplies may matter. |
The contrast is about emphasis, not map shape. Both genres can use compact, interconnected locations, and both can reward revisiting earlier spaces. A network of rooms alone does not make a game a Metroidvania; the stronger clue is whether acquiring abilities systematically changes where you can travel.
How combat feels different
Combat is not missing from survival horror. It is the cost and emotional role of combat that often distinguish it. A Metroid-style game commonly makes weapons and abilities part of the action loop: they help fight enemies and may also help overcome obstacles or reach new places. As the character gains capabilities, the player’s options tend to grow.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
In survival horror, a fight may be possible but still feel like a bad bargain. Limited resources, vulnerability, or the danger of an encounter can make avoiding or delaying combat a meaningful choice. The player may have to consider not just whether an enemy can be defeated, but what the attempt will cost.

- Metroidvania combat: often reinforces action and the use of newly acquired capabilities.
- Survival-horror combat: can reinforce fear by making vulnerability and resource decisions shape whether and how to fight.
Neither description is universal. A survival-horror game can offer substantial combat, and a Metroidvania can include moments of danger or evasion. Judge the overall loop rather than one encounter.

Where the genres overlap—and how games bend conventions
Interconnected exploration, puzzles, combat, and returning to prior areas can appear in both genres. The overlap is why questions such as “Can Resident Evil be considered a metroidvania?” do not have a reliable yes-or-no answer based on one shared feature. Ask instead whether ability-gated navigation is central to the game, or whether surviving threats and managing danger organize the experience.
Individual games also complicate the shorthand. Nintendo describes Metroid Dread as an exploratory action game, but it includes E.M.M.I. pursuit zones where careful movement and evasion matter, alongside combat involving an Omega Cannon. Resident Evil’s entries have varied in perspective and combat emphasis. A genre label does not guarantee a particular camera, map layout, or amount of fighting.
Rank #4
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Two examples to make the distinction concrete
Metroid Dread
Nintendo’s official description places Metroid Dread in the series’ exploratory-action tradition. Its E.M.M.I. zones add pursuit and stealth-like evasion, while its Omega Cannon provides a combat tool. These variations do not remove the importance of exploration and changing access that characterizes the Metroid model.

Resident Evil
PlayStation’s overview describes the first Resident Evil as setting its horror in a maze-like mansion and combining exploration, action, and resource management. Capcom’s 2016 interview about Resident Evil 7 adds puzzles, fear, and combat to its account of the series’ pillars. These official descriptions support the survival-horror emphasis on danger and resource decisions, while reflecting particular entries and eras rather than a fixed formula for every game.
Quick Recap
Which label fits a game you are considering?
- If the main satisfaction is learning a connected map and returning with new abilities to open routes, “Metroidvania” is likely the more useful label.
- If the main pressure is exploring while threatened, deciding when to fight, and managing limited resources, “survival horror” is likely the more useful label.
- If both descriptions fit, call it a hybrid or describe the specific emphasis. Genres are useful summaries, not mutually exclusive boxes.
