How Zelda Remakes Differ from Remasters and Nintendo Switch Online Classics

Zelda remakes rebuild or reimagine older games, HD releases update them for newer hardware, and Nintendo Switch Online provides classic versions through membership libraries.

A Zelda remake rebuilds or reimagines an older game; a remaster or HD re-release usually updates presentation or platform support while preserving more of the original; Nintendo Switch Online gives members access to selected classic versions. The labels are not perfectly consistent across Nintendo’s regions, so the most reliable way to tell them apart is to look at what changed and how the game is accessed.

What separates a remake, a remaster, and a classic re-release?

These terms describe different kinds of change, not a strict Nintendo-wide classification system. A remake substantially reconstructs or reimagines a game. A remaster or HD re-release generally keeps more of the original game intact while updating its presentation or adapting it to newer hardware. A Nintendo Switch Online release is a way to play a classic through a membership library; it does not, by itself, mean the game has been remade.

  • Look at the game itself: Has its presentation or design been substantially rebuilt, or has it mainly been updated for a newer platform?
  • Check the access model: Is it a separately sold game, or part of a subscription library?
  • Read the product description: Nintendo’s labels can vary by release and region, so the described changes matter more than the category word alone.

How the main Zelda examples compare

Release type Zelda example What changes or stays the same How to access it
Remake or reimagining The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Switch, 2019) A reimagined version with revised presentation, new soundtrack arrangements, and gameplay changes, including more item-equipping options and new ways to navigate the map. Sold as a separate physical or digital game. Nintendo product listing
HD update or re-release The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD (Switch, 2021) A Switch release of the 2011 Wii game. The HD title signals a presentation and platform update, but Nintendo’s terminology varies by region. Sold as a separate physical or digital game. Nintendo U.S. product listing
Classic game in a subscription library The Legend of Zelda (NES); Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64) Access to versions of the classic games through Nintendo’s collections, rather than a new remake. Included in Nintendo Switch Online libraries; Ocarina of Time is in the Nintendo 64 collection for Expansion Pack members. Membership details, NES library, Nintendo 64 library
Announced rebuilt release Ocarina of Time (Nintendo Switch 2) Nintendo describes a version built from the ground up, with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and modernized movement and camera features. Nintendo lists November 5, 2026 as its release date. Check the current listing for availability and edition details. Nintendo product listing

Why Link’s Awakening is a clear remake example

Nintendo describes the 2019 Switch release of Link’s Awakening as reimagined. Its updated presentation is only part of the change: Nintendo also notes new soundtrack arrangements and gameplay adjustments, including the ability to equip more items and new ways to navigate the map. That combination makes it more than access to the original Game Boy game or a simple resolution upgrade. Nintendo’s product description outlines the changes.

Why Skyward Sword HD shows the limits of the labels

Skyward Sword HD brought the 2011 Wii game to Switch in 2021. Nintendo’s U.S. product listing presents it as an HD edition, while Nintendo Japan explicitly calls the Switch version a remake. That regional difference is why “remake” and “remaster” are best treated as practical descriptions, not as perfectly consistent official categories. Compare the actual changes and the release model rather than relying on the label alone. Nintendo U.S. listing · Nintendo Japan listing

What Nintendo Switch Online provides

Nintendo Switch Online offers members access to libraries of classic games. The original NES The Legend of Zelda appears in the NES collection. Ocarina of Time appears in the Nintendo 64 classics collection, which Nintendo lists as an Expansion Pack benefit. These are library releases of classic games, not the same kind of standalone purchase as the Switch versions of Link’s Awakening or Skyward Sword HD. Library availability and membership requirements depend on the title and can change, so check Nintendo’s current membership information and the relevant NES or Nintendo 64 catalog.

What to know about the announced Switch 2 Ocarina of Time

Nintendo’s listing gives Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 a release date of November 5, 2026, which is still upcoming as of October 13, 2026. Nintendo describes the version as built from the ground up and lists overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and modernized movement and camera features. It is therefore distinct from the Nintendo 64 classic available through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack library. Since the stated date has not arrived, the listing does not establish that the new version is already available; check Nintendo’s current product page for status and edition details.
