Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the affected printer
This is the best first repair when the error appeared after a printer change.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting:
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.

A damaged legacy package can remain after the printer itself is removed.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:

- Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old HP driver associated with the removed printer.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Add the printer again through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
Do not remove a driver that is still used by another printer or by other computers through a shared print server.

Fix 2: Install the exact HP model package
If Windows Update installs only a basic driver or the error remains, download the driver package for the exact HP printer model from HP’s official support portal.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
hpzppwn7.dllor the HP printer installer. - Open the detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from a trusted HP driver package.
- The file is in the expected printer-driver location.
- The HP installer or file has a valid digital signature.
- The security detection has been confirmed as a false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make the printer installer complete. If Protection History shows a confirmed threat, remove the suspicious package and install a fresh driver from HP or Windows Update.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run it once more, then focus on reinstalling the HP printer package rather than repeatedly replacing the same DLL.

System Restore is useful when printing worked before a driver installation, Windows change, or printer utility update.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Click System Restore.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Click Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove recently installed drivers and programs. After it completes, prevent the damaged HP package from being reinstalled until you have a current package from Windows Update or HP.

Why downloading the DLL or using regsvr32 is the wrong repair
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the printer driver. Even a clean copy may fail because the error can mean that a dependency or driver registration is missing.
