Common reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because hpzuiw71.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting hpzuiw71.dll.”

- Open HP’s official printer driver page in your browser.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the installed Windows version when HP asks.
- Download the available full-feature, full-solution, or basic driver package.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Follow its connection instructions. For USB printers, connect the cable only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Print a test page from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → your printer → Print a test page.
Use the full package when you need scanning tools, HP Printer Assistant, maintenance utilities, or device management. Use the basic driver when you need core printing and the full package is unavailable or unsuitable.
If the installer says the printer is already installed, continue with the removal procedure in the next section rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.

Fix 2: Remove the damaged printer installation and start again
Use this when HP setup is partially present, the printer disappeared after an upgrade, or the error returns after reinstalling over the existing package.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Press Windows key + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Uninstall HP printer software, HP utilities, and entries clearly belonging to the old printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and remove any duplicate or stale entry that remains.
- Install the correct HP package from HP’s official printer support page.
- Restart again and print a test page.
If the printer is no longer used, stop after removing its software. Check Settings → Apps → Startup and disable an obsolete HP startup utility that still launches the missing-DLL message. Do not delete files manually from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Driver Store.
If the installer fails, restart Windows again and retry. Avoid manually deleting Driver Store files because that can damage unrelated printer installations.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
A quarantine event can explain why the file vanished immediately after an update or HP installation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection related to hpzuiw71.dll.
- Record the file path and the detected source.
- Do not restore it if it came from an unknown download or an arbitrary folder.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows has broader servicing corruption, failed updates, or several unrelated system-file errors. They are not the primary repair for a missing HP application component.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:

- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Test the printer and the application that produced the error.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions recommend running DISM before SFC.

Fix 5: Check architecture and the launching process
A 64-bit Windows installation can still run a 32-bit HP utility. Conversely, a 64-bit process requires a compatible 64-bit component. Historical records for this file include both x86 and AMD64 variants.
Find the process that displays the error:

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64, or either file into an application folder unless the official installer places it there. The canonical path for this historical file is not consistently established.
Fix 6: Understand “specified module could not be found”
This wording can mean that Windows found hpzuiw71.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. It can also mean the named file itself is absent.
Use the error dialog, Task Manager, Event Viewer, and the HP installer log to identify:

Reinstalling the complete HP package is safer than trying to identify and replace dependencies individually. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears; there is no evidence that those runtimes repair hpzuiw71.dll specifically.

If you no longer use the HP printer
Do not preserve a broken startup dependency just to silence the message.
- Remove the printer in Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Uninstall its HP software through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager → Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete HP utility that remains.
