The safest fix is to identify the game, mod, utility, or business application that requested it and repair that parent program instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What this file actually does
MinHook is a native Windows API-hooking library. Software loads it when it needs to intercept or redirect Windows functions, commonly for game mods, overlays, injectors, debugging utilities, automation software, or other native components.

The x64 name identifies a 64-bit build. It is intended to load into a 64-bit process. A 32-bit application needs the matching x86 build, if the parent software supplies one. Renaming an x86 file to minhook.x64.dll does not convert it and can prevent the program from starting.

Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because minhook.x64.dll is missing” | The parent application or mod was incompletely installed, updated, or cleaned | Repair or reinstall that exact product |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because minhook.x64.dll was not found” | The file was deleted, quarantined, or moved | Check security quarantine, then restore or reinstall from a trusted source |
| “The specified module could not be found” while the file is visible | A dependency of MinHook or the application is missing, blocked, or incompatible | Reinstall the parent program and its prerequisites |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | Wrong architecture, corrupted file, or incompatible build | Install the matching vendor release; do not rename x86 files |
| The error began after a game or mod update | Old and new files were mixed, or the update omitted a dependency | Verify the game files or reinstall the mod as a complete package |
| Antivirus reports the file | The DLL may be quarantined, modified, or part of an unsafe injector | Verify the source before restoring anything |
| Several unrelated programs fail afterward | Broader Windows corruption or security software interference | Repair Windows components after checking the affected applications |
Fix 1: Identify the program that requested the DLL
Start with the error window. Record:
- The executable name shown in the title or message
- The full path, if displayed
- The game, mod manager, plugin, utility, or business application you launched
- Whether the issue began after an update, reinstall, cleanup, or antivirus event
Then locate the program:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps and look for the related launcher or utility.
- For a shortcut, right-click it and select Open file location.
- Right-click the application executable, select Properties, and open Details.
- Note whether the software is clearly 32-bit or 64-bit and whether it has its own launcher or repair option.
If the error appears when starting a game, the game or its mod framework is the parent. If it appears when starting an office utility or connector, repair that product rather than Windows first.
A file search can confirm whether a copy exists:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
minhook.x64.dll. - Record the folders containing it without moving or replacing any files.
A copy inside the affected application’s directory is more relevant than a copy found in a temporary folder or an unrelated program directory.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most reliable fix because the parent program supplies the correct MinHook build and any companion files.
For a regular Windows application
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to the program’s entry in Installed apps.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the software developer or your organization’s approved software portal.
- Install the same product and architecture required by the application.
- Start it once before adding optional plugins or mods.
A successful repair lets the original application open without the MinHook message. If the error changes to a different missing file, that usually means the first dependency was restored and the next problem is now visible.
For a Steam or Epic game
Use the launcher’s file verification feature rather than copying a DLL manually.
For Steam:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check and replacement process to complete.
- Restart Steam and launch the game without optional mods first.
For Epic Games Launcher:
- Open Library.
- Find the game and select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish, then test the unmodified game.
If the clean game starts but the modded version does not, reinstall or update the mod framework from its original project or vendor release. Restore the complete archive, including its required x64 DLL, instead of taking one file from a different release.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software can remove or quarantine a DLL after an update, especially when it belongs to an injector, overlay, trainer, or modified game package.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries related to the affected application or
minhook.x64.dll. - Read the detection name, affected path, and source.
- Do not choose Allow on device or Restore until you have verified the software package.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The parent program came from its developer, a recognized game launcher, or an approved company source.
- The file path belongs to that program.
- The package has not been modified by an unofficial injector, crack, cheat, or unknown mod.
- Your security product does not show additional suspicious files.
If the source is uncertain, remove the parent package, run a full scan, and reinstall from a trusted official source. MinHook is legitimate open-source software, but a particular package containing it can still be modified or unsafe.
Fix 4: Match x64 and x86 correctly
A 64-bit DLL cannot load into a 32-bit process, and an x86 DLL cannot substitute for an x64 build.
Check the application architecture this way:
- Start the program, if possible.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Open the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if your Windows version exposes it.
- Check whether the process is x64 or x86.
Some applications identify their architecture in their documentation or installation folder. If the vendor supplies both MinHook.x64.dll and MinHook.x86.dll, use the file specified by that product’s instructions.
Do not download an x86 file and rename it. Do not copy a DLL from another game or utility simply because the filename matches. Reinstall the parent program so its own build, companion files, and configuration are restored together.
Fix 5: Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ only for a separate runtime error
Visual C++ Redistributable does not install MinHook. It supplies Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries, so it is relevant only when the application also reports files such as VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, or similar runtime components.
Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Install the architecture matching the application:
- Use the x64 package for a 64-bit application.
- Use the x86 package for a 32-bit application.
- On 64-bit Windows, both packages may be needed by different applications.
Restart Windows after installation and test the parent program. If only minhook.x64.dll remains missing, return to the parent application repair instead of installing more runtime versions.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
DISM and SFC cannot normally recreate a third-party MinHook DLL. They are appropriate when Windows itself is corrupted, updates have failed, or several unrelated applications show loading problems.
First install pending updates:
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the application again. SFC may report that it found and repaired protected system files. That can resolve a broader Windows issue, but it does not prove that minhook.x64.dll has been restored. If the commands report that they could not complete, copy the exact result and repair the parent program separately.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for related Windows problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for a missing bundled DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check permissions, blocking, and security controls
A present DLL can still fail to load if Windows or security software blocks its path.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click the parent application’s executable.
- Select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox.
- If the file came from a trusted vendor archive and the checkbox is present, select it and choose Apply.
- Select the Security tab and confirm that your account has permission to read and execute the application files.
- Check whether Controlled Folder Access or third-party security software blocked the program.
- Test by launching the application from its normal shortcut, not from a temporary extracted folder.
Do not broadly disable antivirus protection. If company policy controls the machine, ask the administrator to review the security event and approve only a verified application package.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the application also reports a graphics or device fault
A driver update is not a normal cure for a missing MinHook file. Consider it only when the same launch failure includes graphics initialization, DirectX, audio, or device errors.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or the device category named in the error.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer the computer or device manufacturer’s driver package for managed systems. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as stale and install updates through its full version, reducing the need to hunt through multiple vendor pages; it is not a replacement for reinstalling the application that owns minhook.x64.dll.
If the driver update changes nothing and the MinHook message remains, stop troubleshooting the driver and return to the parent application.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 minhook.x64.dll
as a general repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLL or OCX files that provide the required COM self-registration entry points. MinHook’s published exports are API-hooking functions such as initialization, hook creation, enabling, and removal, not a normal COM registration interface.
A failed regsvr32 command does not diagnose a missing MinHook dependency. It can also create confusion by producing another error unrelated to the original launch problem. Use registration only when the software vendor explicitly documents it for that specific DLL.
Why random DLL downloads and System32 copying are unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and search-result links offering a standalone minhook.x64.dll. A loose file can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, altered contents, or an additional dependency that is still absent. It may also conceal malware, particularly when the requesting package is an unofficial injector, crack, cheat, or unknown mod.
Never place an arbitrary copy in System32 or SysWOW64. The application may still need a different build beside its executable, and changing Windows-wide search paths can affect unrelated programs. Manual copying is appropriate only when the trusted software’s installation instructions explicitly require copying the matching file into that product’s folder.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Collect the information needed for a precise diagnosis:
- Record the complete error text.
- Note the executable and its full path.
- Confirm whether
minhook.x64.dllexists beside that executable. - Check the application’s launcher log and Event Viewer.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it in Start.
- Select Windows Logs, then Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Reinstall the parent program’s documented prerequisites.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool to identify a secondary DLL if the message says “specified module could not be found.”
If the file exists but still fails, possible causes include a missing dependency, blocked path, damaged package, inaccessible permissions, or an incompatible architecture. If the issue began immediately after a Windows update and affects more than one program, review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. System Restore is a fallback for a previously working installation, not a source of a trustworthy MinHook binary.
FAQ
Is minhook.x64.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party MinHook library distributed by applications, games, mods, plugins, and other software.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable install it?
No. Visual C++ Redistributable installs Microsoft runtime libraries. It may fix a separate VCRUNTIME or MSVCP error, but it does not provide MinHook.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I use MinHook.x86.dll instead?
No. A 32-bit DLL cannot replace the x64 build. Install the architecture required by the process and the parent product.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Restore it to the application directory only when the trusted product’s instructions require that location.
Why does Windows say the specified module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or blocked DLL. The same message can also result from an architecture mismatch or damaged installation.
Is MinHook malware?
MinHook itself is a legitimate open-source API-hooking library. The software that bundles it may still be modified, unauthorized, or unsafe, so verify the parent package before restoring a quarantined file.
Does regsvr32 repair it?
Usually not. MinHook is not normally a COM self-registering DLL, so reinstalling or repairing the parent application is the correct approach.
