It is a clever demonstration of how easily fluent text can feel human—but it is not a reliable AI detector, identity check, or test of consciousness.
What is Human or Not?
Human or Not is a short, anonymous conversation game inspired by the Turing test. Open a round, chat with a randomly assigned partner, and vote “Human” or “AI” when the timer ends. The game reveals the answer and gives you a score for a correct guess.

According to the game’s current official FAQ, human participants can come from around the world, while its bots use large language models including GPT-5, Claude, and Google Gemini Flash. Those model details are claims from the game operator, not an independently audited benchmark. The site identifies its current version as 1.6.2.
The browser version’s About page names Oleg as the programmer and Kate as the designer. The core browser game is described as free.

- TEST YOUR HYPOTHESIS: Create a 3 digit code by stacking punch cards, then ask the analog artificial intelligence computers - each with a different logic puzzle - to check your answer.
- DEDUCE THE SECRET CODE: Each logic question will bring you closer to the secret code, either through the process of elimination or relations between numbers.
- PLAY AS A TEAM OR SOLO: Including the original competitive mode, you can combine your brain power as a team or try to beat the game itself while playing solo.
- NOVEL COMPONENTS: Overlay punchcards to test your secret code against the artificial intelligence computers, reminiscent of computers from the 1970s.
- 7 MILLION COMBINATIONS: On the online problem generator website, find over 7,000,000 different setup combinations, making the gameplay practically endless!
How to play
- Open humanornot.so, or use the platform-specific app listing.
- Start a round and chat naturally with the assigned partner.
- Use the available time to ask follow-up questions rather than relying on one “AI tell.”
- Vote Human or AI when the conversation ends.
- Check the reveal, your score, and any leaderboard result.
There are also mobile listings: Human or Not? on the U.S. App Store and Human or Not on Google Play. Do not automatically assume every listing is made by the same developer: the website names Oleg and Kate, while the iOS listing identifies Stefan Tissen. Store pricing, ratings, age labels, privacy disclosures, and availability can also vary by country and change over time.
Is it really the Turing test?
It is better described as a Turing-test-inspired game than a formal reproduction of Alan Turing’s original proposal.
Turing’s concept asked whether a machine could produce conversational behavior indistinguishable from that of a human under defined conditions. Human or Not turns that idea into a fast social game: one player classifies a conversation partner, and the AI tries to remain convincingly human for a limited period.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat means the game tests two things at once:
- How plausibly an AI can imitate human conversational behavior.
- How accurately a person can classify a short, ambiguous exchange.
An earlier Human or Not research project described in an academic paper involved more than 1.5 million users and anonymous two-minute chats with humans or AI language models. That historical study should not be treated as a performance report for the current site, which has its own version, policies, models, and player population.

Questions that make the game more interesting
The best prompts require context, follow-up, or an imperfect personal perspective. For example:
- “What was the last small thing that annoyed you today?”
- “What were you doing immediately before this chat?”
- “Tell me about a movie you disliked but still remember.”
- “What local food do you think is overrated?”
- “What detail from your last answer would a friend disagree with?”
- “Can you answer quickly without making it polished?”
The follow-up matters more than the first answer. Does the participant remember what they said? Can they handle an unexpected change of subject? Do they ask for clarification? Do they give a coherent but imperfect opinion, or retreat into vague language?
These are conversation tactics, not reliable detection methods. An AI can invent a plausible memory, while a human may reasonably avoid personal questions or give short answers because they are shy, distracted, multilingual, neurodivergent, or concerned about privacy.

| Possible clue | Why it may raise suspicion | Why it is not proof |
|---|---|---|
| Generic answers | The reply could fit almost anyone. | Many real people are terse or uninterested in the topic. |
| Overly helpful replies | The participant answers every part of a question comprehensively. | Some humans are simply conscientious or formal. |
| Balanced, polished arguments | “On the one hand” responses can feel generated. | Careful writers and editors can sound the same. |
| Few concrete details | The participant avoids committing to a specific experience. | A privacy-conscious human may do that deliberately. |
| Persona changes | Age, interests, tone, or opinions suddenly shift. | Humans can be inconsistent, joking, or misunderstood. |
| Emotional neatness | Annoyance or embarrassment is expressed too cleanly. | People vary widely in how they describe emotion. |
Modern language models can imitate slang, humor, uncertainty, hesitation, typos, and emotional language. They can mirror your tone, ask questions back, and maintain a plausible story for two minutes. A bot does not need to sustain a believable identity indefinitely; it only needs to survive the game’s short exchange.

Meanwhile, humans may use translation software, autocomplete, grammar correction, accessibility tools, or generative AI assistance. That makes the human-versus-bot binary less clear than it sounds.
What does not prove that someone is human?
- Perfect grammar does not prove AI.
- Typos do not prove humanity.
- Fast replies do not prove automation.
- Awkward writing does not prove a real person.
- A refusal to share personal information is not evidence of a bot.
- A convincing personal story does not prove that the speaker is human or truthful.
The game rewards confidence, but confidence is exactly what can make conversational judgments dangerous. A fluent answer only shows that someone—or something—produced humanlike text in that moment.
Privacy: treat every chat as public
This is the most important practical warning. Human or Not’s FAQ says chats are public, may be shared online or published on leaderboards, and may be used to train AI models. Its Terms of Use also describe possible internal research and AI-model training use.
Do not share:
- Your full name, address, phone number, email address, passwords, or financial details.
- Your workplace, school, regular route, travel plans, or other identifying information.
- Private photographs, confidential work material, or identifying anecdotes.
Do not click links sent by an anonymous partner. Do not use the game to investigate a suspected scammer, romantic contact, recruiter, seller, or support agent. A conversational exchange cannot authenticate who is behind an account.

There is also a platform-specific age-rating discrepancy. The website FAQ says the site is intended for everyone, while the U.S. iOS listing carries an 18+ rating. Those labels belong to different product surfaces and should not be merged into a general claim that the game is suitable for children.

Is Human or Not worth playing?
Yes—as a quick social game and AI-literacy exercise. It makes the overlap between human and machine conversation tangible, and it can prompt useful discussions about writing style, confidence, and evidence.
No—as an authentication tool or scientific test of consciousness. The game cannot establish that an AI is conscious, that a human is honest, that an account is operated entirely by a bot, or that a message is factually correct. There is also no evidence in the supplied sources that playing it creates durable, general-purpose AI-detection accuracy.
The most useful lesson is not “learn a secret list of bot tells.” It is to recognize when conversation alone is insufficient evidence. If money, access, safety, or sensitive information is involved, verify the person or organization through an independent channel instead of trusting how natural the messages feel.
