If Windows says hwinfo.dll is missing, the problem is usually a hardware-monitoring integration rather than a missing Windows system file. Rainmeter skins, overlays and other utilities can load their own HWiNFO plugin, and the plugin must match the host program’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. Read the complete message to identify which application called the file, then reinstall that application or plugin from its official source. If the file exists but will not load, repair its Visual C++ dependency and check HWiNFO sensor-sharing settings. Only when there are broader signs of Windows corruption should you run DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC). Do not download a loose DLL from a mirror or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32.
What does the “hwinfo.dll is missing” error mean?
hwinfo.dll is commonly an application plug-in used to read HWiNFO sensor data. It is not automatically a core Windows component. The same filename can therefore produce different fixes depending on the program that displays the message.

The wording matters. “The program can’t start because hwinfo.dll is missing from your computer” identifies the executable that attempted the load. A message that appears only when a particular skin or overlay starts points to that integration, not necessarily to HWiNFO itself.
How do I identify which program owns the missing DLL?
Find the invoking program before changing any files. Repairing HWiNFO will not correct a Rainmeter plug-in that is in the wrong directory, and Windows servicing commands will not install an application plug-in.

- Capture the full message. Write down the application name, the path shown in the dialog and the exact wording. Note whether it appears at sign-in, when Rainmeter loads a skin, when a game starts, or only after launching a hardware monitor.
- Close the suspected host. Exit Rainmeter, an overlay, or the monitoring utility from its notification-area icon. If the message stops appearing, that program is the first repair target.
- Check recent changes. A Windows update, a new skin, a restored backup, a moved portable folder or an antivirus quarantine can leave a plug-in reference behind while removing the file.
- Look for architecture clues. A 32-bit host cannot load a 64-bit plug-in, and a 64-bit host cannot load a 32-bit build. The error may be reported as “missing” even when the file is present but incompatible.
- Test with the integration disabled. Temporarily disable the individual skin, sensor widget or overlay that triggers the dialog. If the main program then opens, keep Windows changes out of the repair and concentrate on that component.
Do not infer ownership from the filename alone. The HWiNFO name in a plug-in does not prove that the main HWiNFO application is the process that failed.
How do I reinstall HWiNFO or the application that needs it?
Use the official vendor package for the program named in the error. A clean reinstall replaces missing files and restores the expected folder layout without introducing an unverified DLL.
Reinstall the main HWiNFO package
- Close HWiNFO and every utility that reads its sensors.
- Obtain the current Windows installer or portable package from the official HWiNFO download page. The distribution listing provides x64 and ARM64 choices; select the package that matches your Windows device and the host application.
- Run the installer, or extract the portable package to a new folder rather than overwriting a partially damaged copy.
- Start HWiNFO once and confirm that it opens normally. Do not launch the dependent skin or overlay until the base application has been tested.
- Re-enable the integration and check whether the original message returns.
If the message names a different monitor or overlay, reinstall that product from its own official source instead. Keep the old configuration only if the vendor documents that it is compatible with the new release; an obsolete configuration can continue requesting a plug-in that the current application no longer ships.
Repair a Rainmeter HWiNFO plug-in
Rainmeter integrations use a plug-in file that must be placed in a Rainmeter Plugins directory. Reinstall the skin or plug-in package supplied by its author, then verify that the file is in the Plugins directory used by your Rainmeter installation. Do not place it in a random Windows folder or in the directory of an unrelated game.
- Exit Rainmeter completely.
- Remove or rename the broken copy of the HWiNFO plug-in so that two versions cannot be loaded accidentally.
- Install the plug-in supplied by the skin or integration’s official source into the Rainmeter Plugins directory.
- Match the plug-in architecture to Rainmeter: use a 32-bit plug-in with 32-bit Rainmeter and a 64-bit plug-in with 64-bit Rainmeter.
- Restart Rainmeter, load the skin and watch for a new error. If the skin still fails, test another skin to determine whether the fault is specific to one configuration.
Architecture matching is not optional. Copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit Plugins directory, or the reverse, can produce the same “missing DLL” style message because Windows cannot load the module.

What if hwinfo.dll is present but Windows still cannot load it?
A present file can fail because a dependent runtime is missing. Legacy HWiNFO integrations have been documented as relying on Microsoft Visual C++ runtimes; one forum case was resolved by installing Visual C++ 2010 SP1.
Install the runtime required by the integration
- Check the plug-in or host application’s documentation for the exact Visual C++ runtime and architecture it requires.
- Download that runtime only from Microsoft or the software vendor. Install the x86 runtime for a 32-bit plug-in and the x64 runtime for a 64-bit plug-in when the documentation calls for both.
- Restart Windows after installation, then launch the host application again.
- If the host is old and the runtime is no longer supported, consider replacing the integration with a maintained version rather than collecting individual runtime DLL files.
Never replace a runtime DLL by downloading a similarly named file from a DLL-sharing site. A runtime package installs the complete set of registration and supporting files; a loose copy may be tampered with or may not match the required architecture.
How do I configure HWiNFO for a sensor-data integration?
Many plug-ins do not read HWiNFO directly from its user interface. They require HWiNFO to be running with sensors active and Shared Memory Support enabled.
- Start HWiNFO before starting the Rainmeter skin, overlay or other consumer of sensor data.
- Open the sensor view and leave sensor monitoring active.
- Enable Shared Memory Support in HWiNFO’s settings.
- Restart the dependent plug-in or reload the skin so it can create a fresh connection.
- Confirm that the sensor values populate. If the DLL error is gone but values remain blank, the issue is now an integration or sensor-selection problem rather than a missing file.
Some older Rainmeter integrations are no longer actively developed. The HWiNFO forum notes that a current plug-in was written by another author and may not receive further development. If a maintained replacement is unavailable, use the host application’s own monitoring features or disable that skin instead of forcing an incompatible binary to load.
Should I run DISM and SFC for a hwinfo.dll error?
Run Windows servicing commands only when the evidence suggests broader system corruption: several unrelated applications fail, Windows reports damaged components, or the application reinstall and runtime checks have not helped. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before SFC because DISM supplies the repair files that SFC may need.

Prepare Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts.
- Close games, overlays and monitoring tools so they do not interrupt servicing.
Run the repairs in the required order
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Wait for it to finish; interrupting the process can leave the component store in an unfinished state. - After DISM completes, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies from the repaired store. - Restart Windows, then reproduce the original action that displayed the error.
These commands repair Windows components; they do not install a third-party Rainmeter plug-in. If the same application still requests hwinfo.dll after a clean application repair, return to the host-and-plugin checks rather than repeatedly running SFC.
What should I do if SFC cannot repair some files?
Read the final SFC result carefully. A message saying that all files were repaired is different from one saying that some files could not be repaired.
- Some files could not be repaired: preserve the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) log before restarting repeatedly. The log records which protected files were affected and is useful for Microsoft recovery guidance or technician review.
- DISM reports that source files are unavailable: verify that Windows Update is working and that the device can reach the repair source required by your edition.
- Corruption returns: back up personal files, remove unstable system-modification utilities and follow Microsoft’s additional recovery instructions. Persistent component-store corruption can require a repair installation or Windows reinstallation.
Do not delete the CBS log or replace protected files manually. Manual substitution can make the servicing store inconsistent and complicate a later repair.
What should I avoid when fixing hwinfo.dll?
- Do not download a standalone DLL from an untrusted mirror. You cannot verify its origin, build or architecture.
- Do not copy the file into
C:WindowsSystem32. The plug-in belongs to the application that loads it, not to the Windows system directory. - Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit components. Confirm both the host and plug-in architecture before installation.
- Do not disable antivirus permanently. If security software quarantined a file, verify the publisher and restore or reinstall only from the vendor’s installer after checking the detection.
- Do not run DISM and SFC as a first response to every dialog. They cannot recreate a missing application plug-in.
- Do not keep multiple old plug-in copies. A host may load an unintended version from a different Plugins directory.
Which repair route fits my symptoms?
Use the narrowest repair that matches the evidence. This avoids changing Windows when only one skin is misconfigured.

- Only after the desktop test succeeds, launch a game and confirm that the overlay does not recreate the dialog.
If the error returns only after a game starts, capture the game, overlay and skin versions and disable integrations one at a time. That isolates a conflict without changing protected Windows files.
