What happened to Hytale after it was cancelled?
On June 23, 2025, Hypixel Studios announced that development would end and the studio would wind down. On November 17, founder Simon Collins-Laflamme announced that the original founders had acquired Hytale from Riot Games and would fund the project personally. The revived team said it was returning to the game’s original vision and legacy engine rather than continuing the cross-platform engine rewrite. Hypixel Studios’ announcement described an inherited build with more than 100 NPCs and thousands of items and blocks, while cautioning that many were not properly configured.

The project’s journey was lengthy, but “a decade” is not an established development duration for the game at its early-access launch. The cited timeline establishes the original vision in 2018, the 2025 cancellation and reacquisition, and the January 2026 release; it does not establish a full ten years of development by launch.

When did Hytale enter early access?
Hytale entered early access on January 13, 2026. The team announced that date on November 28, 2025, explaining that it was returning to a four-year-old build and had merged more than 300 GitHub branches into a working branch. The launch post said the team had spent eight weeks working on the older build, merging hundreds of branches and fixing or rebuilding core systems. The early-access date announcement also said the team had grown to 50 members after rehiring more than 40 former and new team members.

What is included in Hytale early access?
At launch, the Hytale Team listed Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, modding support, and multiplayer support as available. In Exploration Mode, players can explore, build, grow crops, craft items and equipment, and play with friends. The team warned that configuration, balance, and other systems were still rough. The launch announcement distinguished these available features from content that was not ready.

For creators, the launch post described asset pack management, an asset editor, and world-generation editors. It also credited Blockbench and CurseForge with helping enable Day 1 modding support; that does not by itself establish an endorsement or an affiliate relationship.
Is Hytale still in early access, and when will it fully release?
As of October 8, 2026, the official store still labels Hytale an early-access game in active development and warns that it may contain bugs and change over time. The studio’s official FAQ gives no fixed early-access duration or full-release date. Its stated plan is to remain in early access until the game feels fully polished and ready for release.

In a July 16, 2026 update, game director Simon said the team had been shipping weekly while holding back new content to focus on the game’s foundations. He wrote, “To be transparent, there aren’t many reasons to come back and play Hytale right now.” That was his assessment at the time of the update, not a permanent description of the game’s appeal or future direction. The post characterized its timeline as rough and cautioned that much of the work shown could change. Read the July update.

Early access is a better fit for players who want to explore, build, experiment with Creative Mode, or make and use mods while the game develops. Waiting is more sensible if you want a polished campaign, Adventure Mode, official minigames, or a predictable full-release date. The developers explicitly described the build as unfinished and warned of bugs; this is not a finished-game purchase framed as complete.
Simon Collins-Laflamme’s November 28, 2025 guidance was direct: “If you don’t feel comfortable pre-ordering, please don’t.” Treat that as a useful signal about the project’s early-access risk, rather than a promise about what future updates will deliver.

What PC requirements should you check?
The official store lists an SSD with 10 GB of free space as a minimum requirement, along with 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended; it also specifies minimum and recommended CPU and GPU requirements. An SSD upgrade is only relevant if your system lacks SSD storage or enough free space. Check the current Hytale store requirements before installing, since specifications can change.
The store says an internet connection is required for download and periodic authentication, while offline play is supported. In other words, offline play is supported, but the game is not presented as requiring no internet at all.
