Grand Theft Auto: London’s dog-covered sidewalks came directly from artist Ray Larabie’s enthusiasm for Viz magazine. Larabie bought stacks of the British comic, used its slang as a cultural reference and turned its euphemism “dogs’ eggs” into a visual gag: pedestrians’ mess appeared on pavements, and a handbrake turn across it left a brown skid mark. The joke captures the whole expansion’s approach to Britain. A Canadian team with limited first-hand knowledge of London assembled a playable, comic-book version of the city from travel guides, films, crime stories and magazine caricature rather than attempting a precise historical reconstruction.
Why are there “dogs’ eggs” in GTA: London?
The phrase comes from Viz magazine’s euphemism for dog excrement. Ray Larabie, the project’s artist, had bought numerous issues and described himself as “a real anglophile.” He treated the magazine as a major source of English cultural knowledge and carried its jokes into the game.

Did Viz magazine inspire Grand Theft Auto: London?
Yes. The evidence is unusually direct: Larabie’s Viz collection supplied the “dogs’ eggs” joke and helped shape the game’s broader cultural shorthand. The magazine was one influence among several, not a complete design blueprint.
The Canadian developers also relied on travel guides, films, crime lore and other pop-culture references. That mixture encouraged exaggeration. Instead of documenting everyday London life, the team assembled recognizable signs of “Englishness” that could support a fast, comic crime game.

What year is GTA: London set in?
Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 is set in 1969, during the period when the Kray twins’ notoriety was a defining part of popular crime imagery. Dan Houser’s enthusiasm for the Krays helped steer the expansion toward a gangster-era framing.
The setting is therefore historical in date and atmosphere, but not a strict reconstruction. The game uses the Kray association, period cars and 1960s chase-film style to establish a mood quickly. It does not claim to reproduce the city’s social history, architecture or street plan with documentary precision.

Who made GTA: London?
The expansion grew out of the Canadian studio Imagexcel, later known as Rockstar Canada. The team initially explored an open-world game set during the Second World War, then pivoted to Grand Theft Auto and adapted the series’ top-down tools for a London-themed release.
Several contributors shaped its identity:
- Ray Larabie supplied the Viz-inspired visual jokes and replaced the original game’s vehicles with period-appropriate cars.
- Blair Renaud designed the map using travel guides and a block-based editor.
- Paul Bennun of Somethin’ Else produced interactive audio and radio stations.
Larabie photographed die-cast toy cars bought at Mississauga’s Square One shopping centre, then converted those images into sprites. It was a practical way to build a 1960s vehicle roster without access to a full automotive reference archive.
How accurate is GTA: London’s map?
It includes prominent landmarks and broad geography, but its street network prioritizes readability and gameplay over cartographic accuracy. Renaud represented the Thames, Westminster, Southwark, major bridges, Tower Bridge and Hyde Park. He later summarized the layout bluntly: “The whole thing was basically a grid.”

- Vehicles gained right-hand-drive entry behavior.
Those touches make the city legible as London while the mostly gridded plan reflects North American development tools and the limits of the source material. The expansion is best understood as a stylized playable London, not a street-by-street model.
How did films and music shape the 1969 atmosphere?
Map and art references were only part of the reconstruction. Renaud drew on 1960s car-chase films such as The Italian Job and Bullitt for sound and atmosphere. The audio team improvised short loops, including a bottle impact recorded for a crash effect.

Bennun’s interactive soundtrack combined licensed tracks, DJ chatter, reggae and crime-film instrumentals. This was an important series step: GTA: London is identified as the first entry to feature licensed music, helping establish a formula that later became central to Grand Theft Auto.
What did GTA: London add to the series?
Beyond its setting, the mission pack introduced drive-by shooting and licensed music to the franchise. It also won the 1999 BAFTA for best sound at the Interactive Game Awards.

The release is notable as a PlayStation 1 mission pack rather than a fully numbered sequel.
