iasdatastore.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called NPS Datastore server. It belongs to Network Policy Server (NPS), the Windows Server technology used for RADIUS authentication, authorization, accounting, and proxy services.

What is iasdatastore.dll?
NPS is Microsoft’s successor to Internet Authentication Service (IAS). It supports authentication for wireless networks, VPN connections, switches, dial-up access, and 802.1X environments. iasdatastore.dll is associated with the NPS datastore and its COM and remote-administration interfaces.

On a 64-bit installation, Windows uses %windir%System32 for native system files and redirects 32-bit system access through %windir%SysWOW64. Do not choose a replacement by file size or copy a 32-bit file over a 64-bit one.

Historical Microsoft update records show several build-specific versions of this file. Those records do not identify a universal version that should be downloaded manually.
What the error actually means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because iasdatastore.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading iasdatastore.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “iasdatastore.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages are generic Windows loader errors. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by iasdatastore.dll is missing, even when the named file is visible.
The failure may affect:
- NPS administration on Windows Server
- An NPS-related service
- A Windows component after an interrupted update
- A program that incorrectly depends on an NPS component
- Startup, if a damaged service or scheduled process tries to load it
There is no dependable file-specific list of games or consumer applications that use this DLL. If only one unrelated application reports the error, that application may have a bad path, an incompatible dependency, or a damaged installation.

Do not assume that every file named iasdatastore.dll is safe. A copy in a download folder, temporary directory, or random application folder needs verification.
Check the path
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, enter
iasdatastore.dll. - Note every result, including its full path.
- Treat a copy outside a Windows system directory as untrusted until it has been checked.
Do not delete a file merely because it is outside System32. An application may contain a private copy, but its path and signature should match the software that installed it and its intended purpose.
Check the digital signature
Open Start, search for PowerShell, right-click Windows PowerShell, and select Run as administrator. Then run:

A valid Microsoft system copy should show a valid Authenticode signature from Microsoft. If the file is in another location, substitute its full path:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:PathToiasdatastore.dll"
A missing or invalid signature does not prove malware by itself, but it means you should not copy, register, or restore the file without further investigation. Run a scan with Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A missing protected file often follows an interrupted update, failed upgrade, disk problem, cleanup utility, antivirus quarantine, or system-file tampering. Start with Windows Update because it can provide the correct files for your exact edition, build, language, and architecture.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
If the error began immediately after an update, open Windows Update > Update history and note the affected update. Do not remove updates automatically; first complete the servicing checks below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker when protected Windows files are missing or corrupted.

- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear to pause for a while. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and retry the operation that produced the error.
How to interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC found no damaged protected files. The error may involve a dependency, NPS configuration, or one application.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
- DISM cannot find source files: Use a matching official Windows repair source rather than downloading the DLL.
For a repair source, the edition, language, build, and architecture must match the installed Windows version:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
sfc /scannow
C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example path. Do not use an arbitrary folder or another computer’s Windows directory.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which step changed the system can make troubleshooting tedious. Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may quarantine a file after a detection or false positive.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries mentioning
iasdatastore.dll. - Check the detected file’s path and signature before taking action.
Restore a file only when it is the genuine Microsoft copy from the expected Windows location and you understand why it was quarantined. Do not restore an unsigned or suspicious copy. Run a full scan if the file repeatedly disappears.
Fix 4: Check the NPS role on Windows Server
This step applies when the problem occurs while running or administering NPS. It is not a universal fix for a consumer application that happens to display the filename.

To check installed roles:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage > Add Roles and Features.
- Continue to the Server Roles page.
- Expand Network Policy and Access Services.
- Confirm whether Network Policy Server is installed.
- Cancel the wizard unless you intend to change the role installation.
You can also check from an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-WindowsFeature NPAS
If the role is missing and the server is supposed to run NPS, install it with Microsoft’s documented command:
Install-WindowsFeature NPAS -IncludeManagementTools
Restart if requested, then open Tools > Network Policy Server in Server Manager. Repair Windows components first if the role is already installed. Reinstalling NPAS should not be treated as a general replacement for a missing DLL.

Fix 5: Repair the affected application or dependency
If the valid Windows copy exists, DISM and SFC report no corruption, and only one program fails, investigate that program rather than copying iasdatastore.dll into its folder.

- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the application’s data is backed up.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
A loader error can also identify a missing dependency rather than the named DLL. An application’s own repair option or file-verification feature is safer than downloading individual files.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
Drivers do not normally provide iasdatastore.dll, so driver replacement is not a primary fix. Consider it only when the error appeared with network adapter failures, VPN problems, wireless authentication issues, or a recent hardware change.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Record the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver, or obtain the driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the connection.
Avoid uninstalling a working network driver unless you have a replacement and a recovery plan.
Manually checking multiple hardware vendors and matching driver packages is time-consuming. Fix 7: Use System Restore or Windows repair reinstall
If the problem began after a driver, update, cleanup program, or system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore preserves personal files but can remove recently installed programs, drivers, and updates.
On Windows 11, another option may be available:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is supported by the installation.

What not to do
Do not download iasdatastore.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the actual problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic fix. Although this DLL is associated with a COM-server role and public inventories show registration-related exports, Microsoft does not provide a file-specific instruction to register it manually. Blind registration of a downloaded or mismatched file can create a new configuration problem.
If a verified Microsoft copy is present and you are diagnosing an NPS COM-registration failure, registration should be performed only as a targeted administrative diagnostic with the correctly matched system copy and architecture.

Is iasdatastore.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. Check its path, Authenticode signature, architecture, and scan results.

No. iasdatastore.dll belongs to the Windows NPS/IAS component, not those redistributable packages. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal repair.
Is NPS available on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
NPS is primarily a Windows Server role delivered through Network Policy and Access Services. The exact presence of related files depends on the installed Windows edition, build, and enabled components.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when I can see the file?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency, or the visible copy may have the wrong architecture, invalid signature, or incompatible version.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Build, edition, language, permissions, and 32-bit versus 64-bit architecture may differ. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or an official matching repair source.
What if DISM and SFC cannot repair it?
Check the DISM error, use a matching official repair source, review update history, scan for malware, and check disk health. If the problem began recently, use System Restore.
