What pxfoundation_x64.dll is
pxfoundation_x64.dll belongs to the PhysX runtime used by some games and Unreal Engine applications. It is normally stored in the application’s own folder, often beside other PhysX files such as PhysX3_x64.dll, PhysX3Common_x64.dll, PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll, or PxPvdSDK_x64.dll.

The _x64 suffix means the file is a 64-bit binary. A 32-bit application cannot use this file as a substitute for its own 32-bit PhysX dependency, and renaming files does not change their architecture.

The full error and the executable path matter. First identify which game or program produced the message.

1. Identify the affected game or application
Look at the title bar and the complete error text. If the message appears while launching a shortcut, right-click that shortcut, select Properties, and read the Target field. The executable named there identifies the installation that needs repair.
You can also use Task Manager:
- Start the affected program until the error appears.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Look for the program’s executable, if it remains listed.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
If you installed several games, do not repair whichever folder happens to contain a similarly named DLL. Repair the product named by the failing executable.
Open that product’s installation folder and look for:

The file may be absent because it was deleted, quarantined, damaged, replaced during an update, or left out by an incomplete installation.
2. Verify or repair the game files
This is the most likely solution because pxfoundation_x64.dll is commonly shipped with the game or application rather than installed as a Windows component.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and reacquisition process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait until verification finishes, then launch the game.
Other launchers
Look for Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Check files in the game’s menu. If the launcher offers a prerequisite installation step, run it after file verification.
A successful repair usually downloads or reconstructs the missing PhysX files and allows the game to reach its normal startup screen. If the same error remains, restart Windows once and repeat the launch. If verification reports files that cannot be replaced, reinstall the game from its original store or vendor installer.

Before uninstalling, back up saved games and custom settings. Keep the game on the same drive while testing, and make sure the drive has sufficient free space.
3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a game file after an update, a false detection, or a damaged download. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with the affected game folder.
- Check the original path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only when it came from the legitimate game installation and the game itself is trusted.
- Run the launcher’s file verification again.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. If the detection points to a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unofficial installer, remove it rather than restoring it. After restoring a trusted file, update Windows Security and scan the game directory before launching.
4. Run the game’s PhysX prerequisite installer
Older games may include a private PhysX bundle or a prerequisite installer that is not refreshed by the current graphics driver.
Open the game directory and inspect _CommonRedist, Redist, Prerequisites, and installer folders. If you find an NVIDIA PhysX installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation or repair option.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the game from its normal launcher.
You can also install NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software when the affected title is an older PhysX application and its own installer is missing or fails. Use NVIDIA’s official driver and PhysX download pages, not a third-party DLL repository.
This package includes both 32-bit and 64-bit PhysX runtime files, but that does not guarantee it contains the exact private build required by every modern game. Verify the game first, and treat the standalone package as a compatibility repair for appropriate legacy PhysX titles.

5. Repair related Microsoft runtimes
A game can report a PhysX error while also lacking a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Reinstalling Visual C++ does not recreate pxfoundation_x64.dll, but it can resolve a dependency that prevents the PhysX library from loading.

- Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page.
- Download the architecture required by the application.
- Install
vc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit application. - Install
vc_redist.x86.exewhen the application is 32-bit. - Restart Windows.
- Run the game’s file verification again.
Older Visual C++ redistributables can remain installed side by side. Do not remove every existing runtime simply because one game reports a missing component.
6. Check for a hidden dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean pxfoundation_x64.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the DLL needs.
If the file exists:
- Confirm it is in the game’s expected folder, not just in
DownloadsorSystem32. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab when present.
- Compare it with neighboring PhysX files from the same installation.
- Run the launcher’s verification process.
- Review Event Viewer for a related application error.
To open Event Viewer, right-click Start, select Event Viewer, then open Windows Logs → Application. Look for an error recorded at the time of the failed launch.

A trusted dependency-analysis tool can identify which library is actually missing, but do not download individual files based on a tool’s result. Repair the complete application or install the runtime named by the game’s official documentation.
7. Check architecture and compatibility
A 64-bit pxfoundation_x64.dll belongs with a 64-bit application and its matching PhysX libraries. A 32-bit game may require a different PhysX file even when the names appear similar.

Check the executable’s architecture with the game’s documentation or a trusted file-properties or dependency-analysis tool. Do not:
- Rename an x86 file to include
_x64 - Rename an x64 file to remove
_x64 - Mix PhysX files from different games
- Copy a file from another installation
- Use a 64-bit DLL to repair a 32-bit application
If only one user account experiences the problem, test the game from another Windows account after backing up settings. If every account fails, focus on the installation, storage, runtime, or Windows environment.
8. Update Windows and investigate drivers
Install pending Windows updates before deeper system repair:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
A display-driver reinstall is not automatically the right fix. NVIDIA’s graphics driver and the PhysX runtime are related but are not identical distribution paths. Repair the game first, then update the graphics driver if several games show startup, rendering, or driver errors.
To check the installed display driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.

9. Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally replace a game-private PhysX DLL, so use them when Windows itself shows broader corruption or application repairs have failed.

- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
A successful SFC scan reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted Windows files. If it reports files it could not repair, restart and run the commands again only if Microsoft’s repair guidance calls for it. Do not expect SFC to restore pxfoundation_x64.dll to the game directory.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
An isolated download can contain malware, the wrong build, or the wrong architecture. Public records show multiple PhysX builds, so a file that has the right name may still be incompatible with the game. It also leaves the damaged installation and any missing dependencies unresolved.

Use the affected game’s launcher, its original installer, the game’s included prerequisite installer, or NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software instead.

Do not copy it into System32
System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose storage for game DLLs. Windows searches the application directory early, and private PhysX files are normally intended to remain beside the executable or in the game’s runtime folder.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. A PhysX runtime library is not documented as a self-registering COM component. Registering it will normally fail or will not address the missing dependency.
FAQ
Is pxfoundation_x64.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence indicates that it ships with Windows. It is associated with an application’s PhysX runtime and should normally be repaired through that application.
Should I install NVIDIA PhysX System Software?
Use it for an older PhysX game when the game’s prerequisite installer is unavailable or damaged. It is not a universal repair for every modern game that bundles its own PhysX files.

Why does the error remain when the file exists?
Another dependency may be missing, the file may be in the wrong directory, or its build may not match the application. Verify the complete installation and inspect the application error in Event Viewer.
Can Visual C++ repair this file?
No. Visual C++ may repair a separate dependency, but it does not recreate pxfoundation_x64.dll.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it only when the failure began after a known system change and game repair, runtime repair, and reinstalling the affected application did not help. A restore can revert recent software or update changes and should not be the first step.
