- Close SolidWorks, eDrawings, SolidWorks Viewer, and any installer windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Press
Windowskey, type Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Find the installed SolidWorks-related product.
- Select it and choose Change.
- In SolidWorks Installation Manager, select Repair your installation.
- Choose the affected product when prompted.
- Continue through the repair process.
- Restart Windows after the repair finishes.
- Launch the same SolidWorks product that produced the error.
A successful repair should restore the application’s own files and allow the program to start without the sldappu.dll message. If the repair asks for installation media, a network location, or service-pack files, do not cancel it and substitute a downloaded DLL. The repair may require the original installation source and the service-pack files applied to that installation.
If several SolidWorks entries appear in Programs and Features, repair the one connected with the error. SolidWorks Viewer, eDrawings-related software, and the full SolidWorks application may not use identical files.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching SolidWorks release
Use a reinstall when Change does not offer repair, the repair fails, or the installation is incomplete.
Before removing anything, locate the original SolidWorks Installation Manager source. This may be an installer folder, deployment share, disk image, or downloaded installation package supplied for your organization. The release and service pack should match the existing installation as closely as possible.
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected SolidWorks product.
- Choose Uninstall or Change, depending on the options shown.
- Follow the SolidWorks removal instructions.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original SolidWorks Installation Manager as an administrator.
- Select the same product and matching release.
- Apply the required service pack after the base installation if your deployment uses one.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test SolidWorks before installing unrelated add-ons or extensions.
If the installer cannot find its source, browse to the original location rather than selecting a random folder. If that source is gone, obtain the correct licensed installer through your SolidWorks administrator, reseller, or support channel. A newer installer is not automatically a compatible replacement for an older application.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine application files after an update, failed installation, or detection change.

- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
sldappu.dllor the SolidWorks installation folder.
If the installation is legitimate and the file came from the official SolidWorks installer, review the detection carefully before taking action. Fix 4: Interpret the exact error message
The wording helps identify the next step.
“sldappu.dll is missing” or “was not found”
This usually means the file is absent from the location where the SolidWorks application expects it. Check antivirus history, then repair the matching installation.

“The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean sldappu.dll itself is missing. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL. Repair SolidWorks first, then check the application’s installer log or Event Viewer.
To review Event Viewer:
- Press
Windowskey and type Event Viewer. - Open it.
- Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time SolidWorks failed.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, and any named dependency.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
This commonly indicates that the DLL and the application are from incompatible releases, or that another dependency is mismatched. Do not overwrite the file with an older or newer copy. Reinstall the matching SolidWorks release.

“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
The file may be corrupt, incompatible, or dependent on a damaged module. Use the SolidWorks repair or reinstall path rather than registry commands.
Fix 5: Install Visual C++ only when the error names it
sldappu.dll is not a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable file. Installing a runtime package is relevant only when the error names a dependency such as VCRUNTIME*.dll or MSVCP*.dll, or when SolidWorks documentation or support identifies that runtime.
Microsoft provides current Visual C++ packages on its Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page. Older SolidWorks releases may require older runtime packages that remain installed side by side.
Check the architecture required by the affected application:
- A 32-bit SolidWorks-related application needs compatible 32-bit runtime components.
- A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit components.
- Installing a runtime does not replace
sldappu.dll. - Installing both architectures may be appropriate when separate 32-bit and 64-bit applications are installed.
After installing or repairing the runtime, restart Windows and test SolidWorks. If the same sldappu.dll error remains, return to SolidWorks repair rather than repeatedly installing runtimes.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only if other applications are affected
Because sldappu.dll belongs to a third-party application, Windows repair commands normally will not restore it. They are useful when multiple unrelated programs show missing system files or Windows itself is behaving incorrectly.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:

- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test SolidWorks again.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance places DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses.
Repeating these commands will not recreate a proprietary SolidWorks DLL if the SolidWorks installation is damaged.

Fix 7: Check architecture and installed release
A present DLL is not necessarily a usable DLL. An entry-point error, application crash, or “not designed to run on Windows” message can result from mixing files.
Check these points:
- Identify the exact SolidWorks product that fails.
- Record its release and service pack from the application entry in Programs and Features or your organization’s deployment records.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Confirm that antivirus did not remove only part of the installation.
- Repair or reinstall the complete product.
Do not copy sldappu.dll from another computer. Two systems can have different SolidWorks releases, service packs, architectures, or dependency sets even when the filename is identical.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when SolidWorks shows a broader graphics problem
A display-driver issue can cause SolidWorks crashes, rendering problems, or application failures, but it is not the normal source of a missing sldappu.dll. Check drivers only after repairing the application, especially if other graphics errors occur.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.

Use the SolidWorks Installation Manager and the original licensed installation source instead.

Those folders are for Windows components and shared system libraries. Adding a SolidWorks DLL there can create conflicts and makes future troubleshooting harder. The application’s installer knows where its files belong.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE controls and ActiveX DLLs. There is no verified evidence that sldappu.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX server, so commands such as these are not standard repairs:

Do not use Windows Features to add a DLL
Windows Features can enable Windows components such as .NET Framework or legacy features, but it does not legitimately install sldappu.dll. Enable a Windows feature only when a separate application explicitly requires it.

When System Restore may help
Use System Restore only when the problem began immediately after a known system change and the correct SolidWorks installer is unavailable.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore is not a replacement for a clean, licensed SolidWorks installation. Repair or reinstall SolidWorks afterward if its files remain damaged.
