When a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title leaves, you lose the catalog license to play it. The game is not deleted from your console, but it becomes locked unless you buy it separately or regain another eligible form of access. Purchased DLC remains tied to your account, yet it cannot be used without access to the base game. Locally stored saves and earned trophies are not erased just because the title departs. A different rule applies when your Plus membership expires: cloud-storage access and eligible monthly-game access are affected by the subscription status itself.
The first step is to identify whether you claimed a monthly game or played a rotating catalog title. That distinction determines what “leaving” actually means.

PlayStation Plus has two different access models. A monthly game that you added to your library remains playable while you have an active eligible membership, even after the monthly promotion has ended. A Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title is available only while it remains in that catalog and your membership tier is eligible.
| Access type | Where it is included | What happens when the title leaves or access changes | DLC and saves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly game added to your library | Essential, Extra or Premium, depending on the current offer | It remains playable with an active eligible Plus membership; the end of the monthly claim window does not itself remove it. | Purchased DLC requires access to the base game. Saves remain on the console or in cloud storage if uploaded. |
| Game Catalog title | Extra and Premium | The catalog entitlement ends when the title is removed. You need a separate license or another eligible entitlement to continue. | Purchased DLC becomes usable again if you regain the game. Existing saves are retained unless deleted. |
| Classics Catalog title | Premium | The Classics entitlement ends when the title is removed. | Progress and trophies are separate from the catalog entitlement; access to the game is still required to continue playing. |
| Streamed catalog title | Premium cloud streaming | Streaming access ends when the title leaves or is otherwise unavailable. | PlayStation says DLC and add-ons are not supported while streaming a title. |
Do not treat every game mentioned in a monthly announcement as a title that will disappear from your library. “Added to library” and “available in a rotating catalog” are different rights.

How long can I play a PlayStation Plus game for?
A monthly game you claimed can be played for as long as the relevant Plus membership remains active and the game stays associated with your account. A catalog game can be played only while both conditions are true: your membership includes that catalog and the title has not reached its removal date.
If the catalog game is already installed when it leaves, the installation does not preserve the license. The console can keep the files, but launching the game will require a valid purchase or another current entitlement. Re-downloading the same catalog version does not bypass the end date.

What happens to DLC and add-ons when the base game leaves?
Purchased DLC is not refunded, deleted or converted into a separate playable product. Its purchase remains associated with your account, but the add-on needs the underlying game license. When a downloaded Game Catalog title leaves, access to its associated DLC stops until you purchase the title or regain eligible access.
PlayStation’s current Plus FAQ explicitly allows members to buy DLC for downloaded Game Catalog games. It also explains that buying the title later makes the purchased DLC usable again. Before buying anything, check that the exact edition, region and platform match the add-on: an expansion for one release may not attach to a different regional or console version.
“Please note DLC and add-on content is not supported when streaming a title.” — Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation Plus games FAQ
That streaming limitation is separate from a catalog removal. Even while a title is available to stream, its DLC may need a downloaded, licensed version of the game.

Are my saved games deleted when a Plus title leaves?
No. A title leaving the catalog does not by itself erase saved data stored on your PS4 or PS5. If you later purchase an available version of the same game, PlayStation says you can access retained progress again, provided the save was not deleted and is compatible with that version.
For a downloaded game, the primary save is on the console. Plus cloud storage is an optional second copy that depends on upload and sync settings; it is not proof that every save was automatically backed up. A save that exists only on a console remains available there, but it can be lost through deletion, hardware failure or a system reset.
What cloud-storage limits apply?
PlayStation’s current US cloud-storage guide lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data, 100 GB for PS4 saved data and a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Sony Interactive Entertainment verified those figures in 2026; the support page does not state a publication year. They are capacity limits, not a promise about how long cloud saves remain after a membership expires.
The current official pages do not specify a guaranteed retention period for cloud saves after Plus membership expiration. Do not assume a fixed number of days, permanent storage or automatic restoration after a long lapse. That uncertainty concerns an expired subscription, not a game leaving the catalog while your membership is still active.

How do I check and upload a save on PS5?
Check the save before the removal date, while the game still launches. You need the game installed or otherwise accessible, the correct PlayStation Network account and enough cloud capacity.
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), matching the game version.
- Open the cloud-storage controls and inspect the title’s upload or sync status.
- If the newest timestamp is only on the console, select the option to upload it manually.
- After uploading, verify that the cloud copy shows the expected date and size. Do not overwrite a newer local save with an older download.
PS5 games can auto-sync when that feature is configured. PS4 saves may auto-upload, but a PS4 save generally needs a manual download to PS5 console storage before it can be used there. Confirm which direction you need before selecting a sync command.

What if I played the game through cloud streaming?
Premium streaming uses a separate Game Streaming Storage system described by PlayStation. Streaming is not the same as downloading the game to console storage, and DLC or add-ons are not supported while the title is being streamed.
If you plan to continue with a purchased download, verify where the streamed game’s progress is stored and whether the purchased version supports that retained data. Do not assume that a streaming session created a normal local PS5 save or that every add-on will carry across automatically.

No. Earned trophies are records on your PlayStation Network profile, not a temporary Plus license. PlayStation’s trophy guide states, “Trophies you earn are visible on your profile.” Losing access to a catalog title does not remove trophies you already earned.
You cannot earn additional trophies without access to the game, however. If you buy the title later or regain an eligible entitlement, the same profile can continue recording new trophies. PlayStation also says trophy information can be deleted only when no trophy has been earned for that game; deleting a game’s trophy information is therefore not a normal consequence of catalog removal.
How do I synchronize trophies before changing consoles?
- On PS5, open your profile picture, select Trophies, press the options button and choose Sync Trophies.
- On PS4, open Trophies, press OPTIONS and select Sync With PlayStation Network.
Synchronize before a console transfer, factory reset or account migration. A PS5 USB system backup does not include trophies; trophies must be synchronized with PlayStation Network.

- Check the game’s library location: monthly games, Game Catalog or Classics Catalog.
- Launch the game once and create a current save.
- On PS5, inspect the matching PS5 or PS4 save category and upload the newest copy to Plus cloud storage if you use it.
- Synchronize trophies manually, especially before moving or resetting a console.
- Record the exact game edition, platform and region if you own DLC or plan to buy a replacement license.
- Check whether the title is offered for separate purchase. A purchase is the documented way to restore access to retained progress and purchased DLC after catalog removal.
Do not delete the installed game or its local save merely because its catalog date has passed. Keeping the data can make recovery simpler if you later obtain the correct license.
Can I back up a PS4 or PS5 save to USB?
PS4 saves can be copied individually to a compatible USB drive through the console’s saved-data controls. This provides an offline copy that is independent of Plus cloud storage, but it must be restored to a compatible user account and game version.
PS5 does not provide the same individual-save-to-USB route. PlayStation documents a full-console USB backup that includes saved data instead. Restoring that backup erases current console data, so it is a recovery operation rather than a quick way to import one game’s save. Ensure the backup drive, console software and account conditions meet PlayStation’s requirements before relying on it.
How can I keep playing after the game leaves?
The most direct documented route is to purchase an available digital version from PlayStation Store. Once the account has a valid license, the retained local or cloud save and previously purchased DLC can be usable again, subject to version compatibility.
A physical disc can also provide access when the title, platform and console match. A disc-capable console is required, and region or edition differences can affect DLC recognition. A Plus renewal is not a guarantee that a departed catalog game will return; membership restores eligible service benefits, not a removed title’s catalog availability.

Subscription expiration and a game’s catalog departure are separate events. A monthly game you claimed becomes unavailable while the membership is inactive. Catalog and Classics games also require an eligible tier, and cloud storage is a Plus benefit across the current US plans.

Because PlayStation does not publish a guaranteed post-expiration cloud-save retention period on the reviewed support pages, download or otherwise preserve important saves before allowing a membership to lapse. A game leaving while your subscription remains active does not itself revoke your cloud-storage entitlement; the title license and the subscription benefit are different controls.
What are the common mistakes?
- Confusing a monthly claim with a catalog license: the former stays in your library with an active eligible membership; the latter can have a removal date.
- Assuming installed files equal ownership: installation does not survive a license check.
- Expecting DLC to run alone: add-ons require the base game and are unsupported during streaming.
- Assuming every save is in the cloud: upload and sync settings determine whether a cloud copy exists.
- Backing up only trophies: trophies sync online, while saved data needs console, cloud or backup protection.
- Restoring a PS5 USB backup casually: full-console restoration erases current console data.
- Deleting trophy information to solve access problems: catalog removal does not require or trigger trophy deletion.
What is the practical answer?
A departing catalog game loses its Plus play entitlement, not your account history. Protect the save while the game is accessible, synchronize trophies, and treat DLC as an account purchase that remains unusable until the base game license is restored. If continued play matters, buy the exact available version or use a compatible disc; do not rely on a Plus renewal to bring back a title that has left the catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I redownload a PlayStation Plus game after it leaves the catalog?
You can redownload the data only while you still have a valid entitlement. After removal, the installed or downloadable catalog copy remains locked unless you purchase the title or obtain another eligible license.
Will my DLC work if I buy the game on disc after playing the Plus version?
It may, provided the disc, add-on and account use the same compatible platform and region. Edition or regional mismatches can prevent an add-on from being recognized, so check those details before buying.
Can I earn trophies offline after a game leaves Plus?
You need access to the game to earn more trophies. Once access is restored, synchronize with PlayStation Network so newly earned trophies are recorded on your profile.
Does renewing PlayStation Plus restore a game that was removed?
No guarantee exists. Renewal restores subscription benefits and eligible libraries, but a title that has departed the catalog may still require a separate purchase.
