scilexer.dll is a Scintilla editing component that normally belongs to a specific Windows application, not to Windows itself. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the affected application from its official installer or launcher so the matching DLL, architecture, and dependencies are restored together.
What this file actually does
scilexer.dll is commonly identified as Scintilla.DLL – a Source Editing Component. It is the native Windows implementation of the Scintilla source-code editing control, including functionality used for syntax highlighting and language lexers.

Scintilla is used by various editors, IDEs, developer tools, and other Windows applications. SciTE is one well-known application distributed with Scintilla components, but the exact application using the file depends on which software is installed on the computer. Some versions of other editors and tools may bundle their own Scintilla build as well.
This file is:
- A third-party application component
- Associated with the Scintilla project
- Commonly distributed as
SciLexer.dllor searched for asscilexer.dll - Normally installed beside the executable that needs it
- Available in both 32-bit and 64-bit application packages
- Not a Windows system file
- Not a device driver
- Not a DirectX component
- Not part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
The file may depend on other components. Therefore, an error naming scilexer.dll does not always mean that this exact file has been deleted.
#1 Best Overall
Causes compared with symptoms
| Error or symptom | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because scilexer.dll is missing” | The application installation is incomplete, damaged, or the file was quarantined | Repair or reinstall the affected application |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because scilexer.dll was not found” | Windows cannot locate the application’s private copy | Check the application folder, then use its repair or verification feature |
| “There was a problem starting scilexer.dll. The specified module could not be found” | The DLL may exist, but another dependency may be missing | Reinstall the application and inspect its prerequisites |
| “scilexer.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | Wrong architecture, damaged file, or incompatible build | Restore the application’s bundled copy |
| “Cannot register scilexer.dll” | The file was incorrectly treated as a COM component | Do not use regsvr32 unless the application vendor specifically requires it |
| “Procedure entry point … could not be located in scilexer.dll” | The application loaded an incompatible version | Reinstall the exact application rather than downloading a newer DLL |
| The file disappears after reinstalling | Antivirus or endpoint security may be quarantining it | Check Protection history before reinstalling repeatedly |
| Several unrelated applications fail to load native DLLs | Broader Windows, malware, storage, or profile problems may be involved | Investigate Windows health and security after repairing the application |
Fix 1: Identify the application requesting scilexer.dll
Before replacing anything, find out which program is producing the error. The correct DLL belongs to that program, and different applications can use incompatible Scintilla builds.
If the error appears when opening a shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the message.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the application name and installation path.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
The executable’s folder is often where SciLexer.dll should be located.
If the error appears after starting Windows
- Note the exact wording and when it appears.
- Check recently installed or updated applications.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Sort by installation date if available.
- Look for an editor, IDE, developer tool, game tool, or older desktop application that may have been updated or removed.
Do not assume that the program is malicious simply because the error appears at startup. Establish the file’s location and the application that requested it first.
Check the application directory
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- If Windows opens a shortcut folder, right-click the shortcut again and choose Open file location.
- Look for
SciLexer.dllbeside the main executable. - If it is present, record its full path rather than copying it elsewhere.
A file that exists in one program’s folder is not necessarily suitable for another program.
Fix 2: Repair the affected application
Application repair is the safest first-line fix because it restores the vendor’s intended DLL version and any files that must accompany it.
Repair through Windows Settings
- Press
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option normally preserves the application’s user data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Some traditional desktop programs do not expose these controls. Use the next method instead.

- Press `Windows + R**.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify if the installer provides one.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the application again.
A successful repair should start the program without the original scilexer.dll message. If a new error names a different dependency, record it rather than downloading that file separately.
Fix 3: Verify files through the application’s launcher
Games, development environments, and managed desktop applications may provide a file-verification or repair function in their launcher.
Look for controls named:
- Verify integrity
- Verify files
- Repair
- Scan and repair
- Manage installation
- Check for updates
The exact steps depend on the application:
- Open the official launcher.
- Select the affected application.
- Open its settings or three-dot menu.
- Select the verification or repair command.
- Allow the launcher to replace missing or damaged files.
- Start the application from the launcher.
This is preferable to copying SciLexer.dll from another installation because the launcher can usually restore the matching build and related files.
If verification repeatedly removes or fails to restore the DLL, pause and check antivirus quarantine before trying again.

Fix 4: Reinstall the application from its official source
If repair is unavailable or unsuccessful, perform a clean reinstall.
- Back up the application’s documents, projects, profiles, templates, and settings if needed.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher, official launcher, or approved company software portal.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the publisher’s instructions require elevated installation.
- Install the application in its normal folder.
- Start it from the newly installed shortcut.
For SciTE itself, use the official Scintilla/SciTE distribution rather than a third-party DLL repository. Official packages can contain the application executable, SciLexer.dll, and related configuration files designed to work together.
If the software is portable, it may not have an uninstall entry. Obtain a fresh package from the official publisher and keep the DLL beside the application executable.
If reinstalling immediately removes the file
This usually points to security software, permissions, or a damaged installation source.
Check the following:
- Confirm that the installer came from the official publisher.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
SciLexer.dllor the application folder. - Review the detection name and file path.
- Do not restore the file merely because its filename looks familiar.
- If the file came from the official installer, scan the installer and computer, then follow your organization’s security policy.
- Repair or reinstall the application after resolving the quarantine issue.
Never disable antivirus protection simply to install an isolated DLL. If endpoint security continues to remove a legitimate application file, have an administrator or security team validate the installer and create any required exception through normal company procedures.
Fix 5: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit match
The operating system’s architecture does not determine which SciLexer.dll the program needs.
- A 32-bit application requires a 32-bit DLL.
- A 64-bit application requires a 64-bit DLL.
- A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs its 32-bit dependencies.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder simply because Windows 11 or Windows 10 is 64-bit.
To check the application:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Look for vendor documentation identifying it as x86, x64, 32-bit, or 64-bit.
- Check whether the program is installed under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86). This is a clue, not absolute proof. - Use the official installer that matches the application edition.
- If uncertain, reinstall the application rather than selecting a DLL manually.
Historical file-index pages may list older x86 builds such as 3.5.6.0, 3.3.4.0, 3.1.0.0, and 2.2.5.0. These are historical examples, not a universal version list or recommended downloads. A newer file is not automatically compatible with an older application.

Fix 6: Check the DLL’s location without moving it
SciLexer.dll normally belongs in the affected application’s installation directory or in an architecture-specific private folder selected by that application.
Rank #3
Do not place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows root directory
- A general shared folder used by unrelated applications
On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 contains system components used by 32-bit Windows processes despite its confusing name. It is not a general-purpose location for application DLLs.
Windows searches an executable’s directory early in the normal DLL search process. Keeping the application’s private DLL beside its executable also prevents one application’s Scintilla version from replacing another’s.
If the file is present but the application still reports it as missing:

- Check the exact spelling and extension.
- Make sure Windows is not hiding a second extension such as
.dll.dll. - Check whether security software has blocked or quarantined the file.
- Repair or reinstall the application.
- Treat “specified module could not be found” as a possible dependency problem.
Fix 7: Understand the dependency error
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that SciLexer.dll exists but one of the DLLs it needs cannot load. The message does not prove that the named file itself is absent.
Use this sequence:
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- Read its official system requirements.
- Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only if the application documentation or a separate error identifies it as required.
- Match the runtime architecture to the application. A 32-bit program may require the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not describe SciLexer.dll itself as a Visual C++ runtime. It is a Scintilla application component. A separate runtime error may concern one of its dependencies.
If the error instead says that a procedure entry point cannot be located, the program may be loading the wrong Scintilla build. Restore the application’s own copy rather than adding a random version.
Fix 8: Run DISM and SFC only for Windows component problems
Because SciLexer.dll is not a normal Windows component, System File Checker usually will not restore it from an application folder. DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows itself appears damaged or when many unrelated programs fail to load.

- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They do not normally replace a third-party SciLexer.dll stored in an application directory.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands is taking longer than identifying the actual damaged component, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it detects; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected Scintilla application remains the definitive fix for this file.
If DISM or SFC reports errors it cannot repair, save the exact output and investigate broader Windows corruption instead of copying DLLs into system folders.
Fix 9: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry points expected by that utility. Ordinary Scintilla runtime DLLs are not established as COM components that require registration.
Avoid using these commands as a generic fix:
regsvr32 SciLexer.dll
regsvr32 /u SciLexer.dll
They may produce an error such as:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That result does not mean the DLL is missing. It means the registration command is not appropriate for that file.
Only use regsvr32 if the affected application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register its Scintilla component and gives the correct file path and command. Otherwise, repair the application and leave its private DLL in its original directory.
Fix 10: Update or reinstall drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal cause of a missing scilexer.dll file. Driver work is relevant only when the application also crashes with display, rendering, hardware, or device errors, or when Device Manager reports a problem.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, System devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Use the device manufacturer’s official driver package if an update is required.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove working drivers just because scilexer.dll is missing. If several applications also show hardware-related failures, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; installation of driver updates is handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing the application remains the correct fix when this DLL alone is the problem.
Fix 11: Investigate malware, disk errors, or a damaged profile
A damaged disk, aggressive cleanup utility, malware, or security software can delete or alter application files.
Run a scan using Microsoft Defender or your organization’s approved security product. Do not restore a quarantined file until its source and integrity have been checked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf only one Windows account is affected:
- Create or use a separate local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch the application.
- If it works, the original profile may have damaged permissions or per-user configuration.
- Move or reset the application’s per-user settings only after backing them up.
If the application fails for every user, check storage health, Windows integrity, and the application installer. Back up important files before attempting major repairs.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading an isolated scilexer.dll from a random DLL website is not a reliable repair. The file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, be an incompatible historical build, or omit dependencies that the application also needs.
It can also create a version conflict:
- One application may need an older Scintilla interface.
- Another may need a different build.
- A 32-bit program cannot use a 64-bit replacement.
- Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 may not affect an application that searches its own folder first.
Use the affected application’s official repair option, launcher verification, publisher installer, or an official Scintilla/SciTE package instead. Preserve the DLL beside the executable that was designed to use it.
Best Value
When to use System Restore
System Restore is an escalation option, not the first repair for one missing application DLL.
Consider it only when:
- The problem began immediately after a known software installation or system change.
- A suitable restore point exists.
- Application repair and reinstall did not resolve the issue.
To open it:
- Press
Windows + R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Review the available restore points.
- Select one created before the problem began.
- Review affected programs.
- Follow the wizard only after backing up important work.
System Restore rolls back selected system settings and installed software changes. It is not a substitute for restoring the correct application package.
Information to collect before requesting support
If the error continues, record:
- The affected application name and version
- The exact full error text
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and architecture
- The application executable’s full path
- Whether
SciLexer.dllexists and its full path - Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the file was quarantined
- Whether repair, verification, or reinstall completed successfully
- Any dependency or Visual C++ runtime message
- DISM and SFC results
- Relevant entries in Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application
This information distinguishes a missing file from a dependency failure, architecture mismatch, security removal, or wider Windows problem.
FAQ
Is scilexer.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party Scintilla application component and should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is scilexer.dll a Visual C++ Redistributable file?
No. A program using Scintilla may separately require a Visual C++ runtime, but SciLexer.dll itself is not that runtime.
Do I need the 64-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?
Not necessarily. Match the DLL to the application. A 32-bit application requires a 32-bit DLL even on 64-bit Windows.
Can I copy scilexer.dll from another computer?
That is risky because the other computer may have a different application version, architecture, or dependency set. Repair the affected application from its official source instead.
Should I register scilexer.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a standard repair for an ordinary Scintilla runtime DLL.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file is present?
The message may refer to a dependency required by SciLexer.dll. Repair the application and follow its documented prerequisites.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SFC restore scilexer.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while SciLexer.dll normally belongs to a private application directory.
What if antivirus keeps deleting the file?
Check Protection history, validate the installer’s source, scan the system, and involve your administrator or security team. Do not repeatedly restore an unverified copy.
Is every file named scilexer.dll safe?
No. The filename alone does not prove provenance. Judge it by the official application package, path, signature where available, and security scan results.
