Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →impbase.dll is an application file used by Topaz image software, including Topaz Gigapixel AI, Topaz Studio 2, Topaz Adjust AI, and related products. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft Visual C++ file, DirectX component, or general-purpose file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32.
The safest repair is to run the official installer for the exact Topaz product and choose Repair. If Repair is unavailable or does not work, uninstall the product, restart Windows, and install the correct version again from your Topaz account or downloads area.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches the failure:
- The error appeared after an update or interrupted installation: run the Topaz installer’s Repair option first.
- The file is absent from the Topaz application folder: repair or reinstall the application.
impbase.dllexists, but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing, such asQt6Core.dll,MSVCP140.dll, orVCRUNTIME140.dll.- Windows Security quarantined the file: review Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error started after installing a different Topaz product: check whether you installed current Gigapixel instead of legacy Gigapixel AI, or selected the wrong CPU architecture.
- The application crashes and names
impbase.dllas the faulting module: the DLL may not be missing. The crash can result from corrupted application files, incompatible drivers, or another dependency. - Only a Photoshop or Lightroom plugin fails: test the standalone Topaz application first. A plugin problem and an application installation problem are not always the same.
- Several unrelated applications also fail: check Windows components with DISM and SFC after repairing Topaz.
Do not begin by downloading impbase.dll from a DLL repository. A random copy can contain malware, match the wrong Topaz release, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual dependency problem unresolved.

Fix 1: Repair the official Topaz installation
Topaz identifies Repair as a way to verify application files, replace corrupted components, and restore missing files.

- Close Topaz, Photoshop, Lightroom, and other image applications.
- Obtain the installer for the exact product you own from your Topaz account or the official Topaz downloads area.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair when the option appears.
- Allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the standalone Topaz application before testing any plugin.
A successful repair should allow the standalone application to open without the impbase.dll message. If the application still fails, check whether the file is present in its own installation folder, for example:
C:Program FilesTopaz Labs LLCTopaz Gigapixel AI
The exact folder depends on the product and installation choices. Do not move the DLL to System32 or SysWOW64.
If Repair is not offered, or the installer reports that it cannot repair the installation, continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Uninstall and reinstall the correct Topaz product
This is the most reliable solution when files were deleted, an update was interrupted, or old and new application files are mixed.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the relevant Topaz product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Check
C:Program Filesfor the old Topaz application folder and remove it only if the uninstaller left it behind. - Check the relevant
C:ProgramDataTopaz Labs LLCproduct folder. Do not delete unrelated Topaz data unless the official troubleshooting instructions for your product require it. - Download the installer for the product you actually own.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Restart Windows again and test the standalone application.
Check current versus legacy Gigapixel
Topaz distinguishes current Gigapixel from the discontinued legacy Gigapixel AI product. Legacy Gigapixel AI installers are provided through the customer account’s Legacy section, and the final legacy version is identified by Topaz as 8.4.4.
If you own a legacy license or need an older project environment, installing the current product may not restore the application that originally used impbase.dll. Select the matching legacy installer instead of assuming that every Gigapixel installer is interchangeable.
Copying impbase.dll from another Topaz installation is also unsafe. Different releases can require different exports, dependencies, models, and supporting files.

Fix 3: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ dependency
An error that names impbase.dll does not always mean that impbase.dll itself is absent. Windows can report that a specified module could not be found when the named DLL exists but one of its dependencies does not.
Common dependency names include:
MSVCP140.dllVCRUNTIME140.dll- Other Microsoft Visual C++ runtime components
- Qt libraries installed beside the Topaz application
Topaz documents Visual C++ runtime problems as a possible cause of application and installer failures.
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download the x64 package for a current Intel or AMD Windows installation.
- Install it, even if another Visual C++ version is already present.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Topaz Repair option again, or reinstall the product.
- Test the standalone application.
Older 32-bit Topaz products may also require the x86 package. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit software, so match the runtime to the application as well as to Windows. Do not remove every older Visual C++ package; several versions can coexist legitimately.
Installing Visual C++ does not replace impbase.dll. It repairs a possible dependency chain, while the Topaz installer supplies the application’s private files.

Security software can quarantine an application file or block the installer from writing it. Topaz also identifies antivirus, firewall, VPN, proxy, and network restrictions as possible installation causes.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Topaz or
impbase.dll. - Confirm that the detected file came from the official Topaz installer.
- If it is clearly a false positive, use the available restore or allow action.
- Re-run Repair or reinstall Topaz.
- Re-enable normal security protection immediately after the installation.
Do not restore an unknown copy merely because its filename matches. If the file came from an unofficial download, remove it and reinstall Topaz from the official source.
Also check available disk space and temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy if the installer cannot download components. Do not permanently weaken firewall or antivirus protection.

Fix 5: Verify the application architecture and installation path
Topaz-related crash reports identify impbase.dll as a 64-bit application module in some products. The correct installer still depends on the product and computer you are using.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck these details:
- Open Settings → System → About.
- Note System type and the processor information.
- Confirm whether the computer uses Intel or AMD hardware, or a Snapdragon ARM processor.
- Download the installer intended for that architecture.
- Remove the incorrectly installed product before installing the correct build.
- Test the standalone application.
Topaz specifically provides a Snapdragon installer for ARM systems. Do not assume that an Intel or AMD installer is the correct choice just because Windows itself is 64-bit.
If the error appears only inside Photoshop or Lightroom, open the Topaz application directly. If the standalone app works, repair or reinstall the plugin from the Topaz installer and verify that the host application is using the correct plugin folder.
Fix 6: Update Windows and graphics drivers
A Topaz crash that identifies impbase.dll as the faulting module may be an access-violation crash rather than a missing-file error. Graphics drivers, incomplete Windows updates, or damaged application components can contribute.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Topaz again.
Then check the graphics driver:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If the driver was recently updated and the crash began immediately afterward, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Do not remove the device unless the manufacturer’s installation instructions require it.
When several hardware drivers are involved, manually checking versions can mean hunting through vendor pages and guessing which package is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected Topaz product remains the definitive fix for a missing application DLL.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself appears damaged, multiple applications show DLL errors, or the failure began after a system corruption event. They do not normally recreate an application-private Topaz DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Topaz Repair option again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time, particularly when only Topaz is affected. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows detected problems, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing or reinstalling the Topaz application.

Do not treat regsvr32 as a universal DLL repair command:
regsvr32 impbase.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registerable components that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, including some COM and ActiveX DLLs. There is no verified evidence that Topaz’s application-private impbase.dll is such a component.
Running the command may produce an entry-point or registration error and will not restore a missing Topaz installation. See Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation for its intended use.
When to use System Restore or contact Topaz
If the failure began immediately after a driver, Windows, or software change, System Restore may help:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore does not replace a clean Topaz installation and should not be used as the first step for an isolated missing application file.
Contact Topaz support if every official reinstall fails. Collect:
- The exact product name and version
- Whether it is current or legacy Gigapixel
- Windows version and build
- CPU architecture
- The complete error text
- Whether the standalone app or only a plugin fails
- Any antivirus quarantine event
- Logs opened through Help → Open Logs Folder
Microsoft’s DLL search-order documentation also explains why placing a replacement DLL in a system folder is not a safe workaround.

FAQ
Is impbase.dll a Windows file?
No. The available evidence associates it with Topaz image applications. It should normally remain in the application’s own folder, not System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I download impbase.dll separately?
Do not do so. The authoritative source is the matching official Topaz installer for your product and architecture.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
A dependency required by impbase.dll may be missing. Check the Visual C++ runtime and the other files installed beside the Topaz application.
Is a faulting-module report proof that impbase.dll is defective?
No. A crash can surface in that module even when the file is present. Repair Topaz, update Windows and drivers, and check dependencies.
Should I install current Gigapixel or Gigapixel AI?
Use the product matching your license and existing workflow. Legacy Gigapixel AI and current Gigapixel are not automatically interchangeable.
