Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most newcomers, play the Far Cry games in release order. That gives you the series’ progression as it arrived and keeps Far Cry New Dawn after its direct predecessor, Far Cry 5. You can skip the console-focused Instincts games and treat Blood Dragon as optional if you want a shorter route.

- Far Cry
- Far Cry 2
- Far Cry 3
- Far Cry 4
- Far Cry Primal
- Far Cry 5
- Far Cry New Dawn
- Far Cry 6
This is a practical route through the series, not a claim that every game shares one continuous story. Most entries work as standalone experiences; the clearest story connection is New Dawn, which follows Far Cry 5. GamesRadar’s series guide identifies that sequel relationship and distinguishes mainline games from spin-offs.
Full release order, including the Instincts games
For a fuller release-order run that includes the console spin-offs, follow this sequence:
#1 Best Overall
- Far Cry
- Far Cry Instincts
- Far Cry Instincts Evolution
- Far Cry Instincts Vengeance
- Far Cry 2
- Far Cry 3
- Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
- Far Cry 4
- Far Cry Primal
- Far Cry 5
- Far Cry New Dawn
- Far Cry 6
Instincts Vengeance is described by GamesRadar as a remake of Evolution. Include these entries if your aim is to explore the broader release history; they are not required to follow the modern mainline route.
Where the spin-offs fit
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Play Blood Dragon after Far Cry 3 if you want it in release order. It is a spin-off, so you can leave it out without disrupting the major-entry sequence. Ubisoft says the Far Cry 6 Season Pass includes Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition, alongside three episodes in which players take the roles of Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min, and Joseph Seed. Check Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 page for the Season Pass description; availability may vary by platform and region.
Rank #2
- Play as Dani Rojas, a local Yaran, as you fight alongside a modern-day guerrilla revolution to liberate Yara
- Fight against Castillo’s regime in the most expansive Far Cry to date, through jungles, beaches, and Esperanza, the capital city of Yara
- Employ an arsenal of resolver weapons, backpacks, and vehicles to take down Castillo’s ruthless regime.
Far Cry Primal
In release order, play Primal after Far Cry 4. Its prehistoric setting makes it a distinct detour, and it can be moved around if you prefer to play it separately from the other entries.
Is there a chronological story order?
There is no reliable, authoritative chronological order spanning every game in the available sources. The lists above are release order, not an in-universe timeline; avoid treating fan timeline theories as settled canon. For most players, release order is the clearest choice, with Far Cry 5 directly before New Dawn.
Rank #3
- International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions.
Which Far Cry games are worth considering on current consoles?
Ubisoft announced in January 2026 that Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and Far Cry Primal received 60FPS updates on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. See Ubisoft’s update notice for the announcement. Confirm that the specific game version you plan to play supports your platform before buying.
Ubisoft’s October 7, 2021 launch announcement for Far Cry 6 listed Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Amazon Luna, and PC. That is a historical launch-platform list, not a guarantee of current availability or service operation. Ubisoft’s launch announcement provides that original list.
