in_wm.dll is the Winamp/Nullsoft Windows Media input plug-in. If Windows says in_wm.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to repair the application that installed it rather than downloading a standalone DLL.
The plug-in supports WMA audio and WMV/ASF media in Winamp. It is an application plug-in, not a Windows system file, Visual C++ Redistributable component, DirectX file, or .NET file.

First, identify the application and file path
Before changing Windows, check which program displays the error. The same filename may appear in Winamp, MediaMonkey, another compatible plug-in host, or software that has copied an old Winamp plug-in.
Common reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because in_wm.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because in_wm.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting in_wm.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading in_wm.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “in_wm.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording varies with Windows and the host application. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that in_wm.dll exists but one of its dependent files is missing.

For a normal Winamp installation, check:
C:Program FilesWinampPluginsin_wm.dll
The exact folder may differ if Winamp was installed elsewhere. Do not search only in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. This plug-in belongs in the host application’s plug-in directory.
Fix 1: Reinstall Winamp with Windows Media support
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
This is the most likely solution, especially if the error began after selecting a Lite, Standard, or custom installation.
- Close Winamp.
- Close MediaMonkey or any other program that may be hosting Winamp plug-ins.
- Back up playlists and settings if they are important.
- Download Winamp from its official support page and use the installer linked there.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Full or Custom installation.
- In the component list, open Multimedia Engine.
- Enable Windows Media Audio (WMA).
- Enable Windows Media Video (WMV, ASF) if you need WMV or ASF playback.
- Keep the existing Winamp installation folder unless you deliberately use another known location.
- Complete the installation.
- Start Winamp and test a WMA file. Test a WMV or ASF file too if that is the media that triggered the error.
A successful repair normally restores in_wm.dll under Winamp’s Plugins directory along with the files it needs. If the installer offers Previous, Lite, or another reduced setup, do not choose a package that omits the Windows Media components.
If Winamp is badly damaged, remove it first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find Winamp.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer again.
- Select the Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Video components.
If Winamp’s old folder remains after uninstalling, do not delete it until you have copied any playlists or settings you need. A clean reinstall should place the plug-in in the installation directory selected by the installer.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 3–10 minutes
An antivirus product may quarantine an older multimedia plug-in. Treat the detection carefully rather than automatically restoring the file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
in_wm.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect the file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the Winamp installation you intentionally installed.
- Review the detection name and action.
Restore or allow the file only when it came from a trusted, official Winamp installation and you have good reason to believe the detection is a false positive. If the file came from a random download, an unfamiliar folder, or an unofficial repackaged installer, leave it quarantined and reinstall Winamp from its official source.

After a legitimate restore, start Winamp and test the affected media. If Windows Security immediately quarantines the restored file again, do not keep disabling protection. Reinstall the application and investigate the detection with your security provider.

If the error appears in MediaMonkey or another application rather than Winamp, repair that host first.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Use its available Repair, Modify, or Uninstall option.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Reinstall the application using its official installer.
- Test the same file that caused the error.
Older Winamp plug-ins were sometimes copied into third-party hosts. A historical in_wm.dll version may work in one host and fail in another. The host and plug-in also need compatible architecture and plug-in interfaces. The official Winamp documentation does not establish a current version, hash, file size, or 32-bit/64-bit specification for this DLL, so do not select a replacement based on an unverified version number.
WACUP is a special case. It may block or avoid in_wm.dll and use DirectShow handling instead. If WACUP reports the file, do not assume that restoring the Winamp plug-in is the correct solution. Use WACUP’s supported media and plug-in settings or reinstall WACUP itself.
Fix 4: Check for a damaged or incomplete application folder
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If in_wm.dll is present but will not load, the plug-in may be corrupt or a dependency may be missing.

- Select Open file location.
- Open the application’s plug-in folder.
- Confirm that
in_wm.dllis inside the host’s expected plug-in directory. - Right-click the host application and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab and confirm that unnecessary compatibility settings are not forcing an unsuitable mode.
- Close the window without changing settings unless you know a compatibility mode is required.
- Reinstall the host application from its official installer.
Do not copy a replacement DLL from another computer. Even when the filename matches, the plug-in may be from a different Winamp generation, have incompatible dependencies, or be the wrong architecture.

Fix 5: Do not register the plug-in with regsvr32
Time needed: 1 minute
Do not run:
regsvr32 in_wm.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM, OLE, or ActiveX libraries that expose a registration entry point. A Winamp input plug-in is loaded through Winamp’s plug-in system and is not normally registered globally.
Registering it can produce another error without repairing the missing file. It also does not make a plug-in in System32 usable by Winamp.
Likewise, do not place in_wm.dll in either of these folders:

The correct location is the plug-in directory of the application that owns it.
Fix 6: Repair Windows only when other components are failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Because in_wm.dll is an application plug-in, Windows component repair is secondary. Use it when other Windows features, applications, or system files are also showing corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Run the following command separately:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall or launch Winamp and test the affected media again.
Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM can repair Windows components, but they do not normally supply a missing Winamp plug-in.

Fix 7: Consider drivers only if media playback is broadly broken
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A display or audio driver is not the normal source of a missing in_wm.dll plug-in. Check drivers only if other media applications also fail, sound is missing system-wide, or playback became unstable after a Windows change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for the display adapter under Display adapters if video playback is also affected.
- Restart Windows and test the host application.
If updating does not help, return to the device’s Properties, open the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver only when the problem began immediately after a driver update. Do not remove a working driver merely because Winamp reports a missing plug-in.

A standalone DLL download is usually the wrong repair for this error. Which media does it support?
Winamp documentation identifies support for Windows Media Audio, including documented DRM support in relevant versions, and Windows Media Video/ASF playback.
Does every Winamp installation need it?
No. A reduced installation may omit the Windows Media components, and some hosts may use another decoder. Install it when the application requires Winamp’s Windows Media input support.
Should I use regsvr32?
No. Winamp loads this plug-in through its own plug-in system; global registration is not the repair.
What if the file was quarantined?
Inspect the detection and path in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore it only when it came from a trusted Winamp installation and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Otherwise reinstall from the official source.
