Most indie games are funded with a mix, not a single cheque: savings or client work can carry a prototype, a grant can cover eligible production costs, and crowdfunding, early access or a publisher can help pay for what comes next. The right mix depends on what you need, how much control you can give up, and whether you can show that players want the game. Self-funding preserves revenue and decision-making but puts more financial risk on the team; publisher funding can add capital and launch services but usually comes with recoupment and a revenue share. Grants are often non-dilutive, while crowdfunding works best when you already have an audience.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-funding | A small scope, an existing income source or enough runway to develop at a sustainable pace | Full control and store net; personal financial risk and slower progress | Nov 2026 |
| Publisher | A team that needs production capital, launch support or platform relationships | Advance and services in exchange for recoupment and a revenue share | Nov 2026 |
| Grant | A team that meets a programme’s geographic, company and project criteria | Often no equity or repayment; competitive applications, eligibility rules and reporting | Nov 2026 |
| Crowdfunding | A game with an existing audience willing to back it | Campaign cash and demand evidence; fees, fulfilment costs and public commitments | Nov 2026 |
These routes can be combined. The comparison is about what each one contributes and what it asks in return—not a universal ranking. Investors, platform guarantees, early access and tax relief can also fit into a funding plan, but their availability and terms depend on the studio, game and market.

How do I fund my indie game?
Start by defining the gap you need to finance: a prototype, the remaining production months, a console port, or launch and marketing. Then match each part of that gap to the least costly source that can realistically cover it. A project might use savings or contract work for a playable slice, apply for a suitable grant, and later use a publisher or a community campaign to fund a larger production phase.
A funding stack is often more resilient than waiting for one yes. A grant may take months and can be rejected; a publisher pitch can take months to reach signature; crowdfunding needs preparation and an audience before its 30–45-day campaign. Keep parallel options open, and avoid making the whole schedule depend on one grant round or publisher decision.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Need time and control: consider savings, client work, or a smaller scope, with grants where eligible.
- Need production money and launch capabilities: consider a publisher, but evaluate the recoup waterfall and contracted services—not just the advance.
- Already have interested players: consider crowdfunding or early access if the build and update plan can meet expectations.
- Building a multi-game studio: consider investment or a longer-term financing relationship; equity investors generally expect studio growth beyond one title.
Put a 90-day rolling cash forecast beside the production schedule. GamineAI’s 2026 guidance highlights the risk of milestone timing: a delayed acceptance or payment can create a cash gap even when the total deal appears sufficient. Include buffers, objective milestone acceptance criteria, cure periods and any service costs that can be passed through to the project.
What does each funding route cost?
The visible amount raised is not the same as the money or control the studio keeps. A Plus Games Studio’s funding guide, checked 20 October 2026, summarizes the main trade-offs this way:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Route | What the studio gets | Main cost or risk | Typical time to money | Common failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-funding | Control and the store net | Personal financial exposure and slower progress | Immediate if savings or income are available | Runway ends before the game is finished |
| Publisher | An advance and potentially marketing, QA, localization and platform relationships | Recoupment, revenue share and possible loss of control | Pitch to signature can take months | Costs never recoup, or contract terms restrict the IP or future work |
| Grant | Usually cash without equity or repayment | Eligibility, competition, application work and reporting | Often 3–6 months | Waiting for a decision, then receiving a rejection |
| Crowdfunding | Cash, community and evidence of demand | Platform and processing fees, fulfilment costs and public commitments | 30–45-day campaign after months of preparation | Missing the target or winning but being unable to fulfil the promises |
Timings are broad estimates from that guide, not guaranteed processing times. A project can also use early access or a platform/subscription deal alongside these routes, but those introduce their own obligations or opportunity costs.
How does publisher recoupment work?
A publisher advance is usually an advance against the developer’s future share of revenue, not a grant or a guaranteed profit. The publisher recoups its agreed investment from game receipts before the post-recoup split begins; depending on the contract, the developer may receive no royalty during that period.
Follow the money from a sale
Steam’s baseline platform fee is commonly modeled as 30% before a publisher split. For an illustrative $20 Steam sale, Steam Page Analyzer’s June 2026 example leaves $14 before other deductions such as VAT, refunds, regional pricing and discounts. Under that simplified example, the developer receives:
| Illustrative deal stage | Developer share of the $14 remaining after Steam’s 30% |
|---|---|
| Self-published | $14.00 |
| Publisher deal, 50/50 post-recoup | $7.00 after recoup |
| Publisher deal, 20/80 developer/publisher pre-recoup | $2.80 while recouping |
| Publisher deal, 0/100 developer/publisher pre-recoup | $0.00 to the developer while recouping |
This is illustrative deal math, not a prediction of a real game’s proceeds. The contract’s definition of net revenue, deductions, recoupable costs and payment timing matters as much as the headline percentage.

Rami Ismail’s 2022 explanation of publishing agreements separates four buckets:
- Upfront: money paid before completion, often against milestones. Ismail describes this as the safest source of revenue because it is paid regardless of the game’s market success, subject to the contract’s terms.
- Guarantee: an amount promised at launch or delivery, common in platform or subscription arrangements. It does not fund development unless the payment schedule makes it available earlier.
- Pre-recoup share: the division of revenue while the publisher recovers its investment. Reported structures include 0/100, 20/80, 30/70 and 50/50, with the developer’s share listed first.
- Post-recoup share: the split after the agreed recoup amount is recovered. Around 50/50 is common in the cited accounts, but more developer-favorable or less favorable terms also occur.
A higher pre-recoup share can mean earlier developer income without necessarily increasing the total paid to the developer over the life of the deal. Ismail’s negotiation priorities, as summarized by Steam Page Analyzer, are to focus first on the upfront, then the post-recoup share, then the pre-recoup share.

What do historical deal figures tell you?
Kellen Voyer of Voyer Law analyzed 30 real indie publishing contracts in 2020. Across those agreements, the average developer share of net was 60%; it averaged 71% in deals without an advance, 55% when the advance was $100,000–$500,000, and 53% for advances above $500,000. Eighteen percent of the contracts had no advance, while 42% paid developers nothing until the publisher fully recouped. The average advance was $318,000 across all deals, or $460,000 among deals that included one; the reported range was $100,000–$2 million.
Those are historical figures, not current offers or a minimum acceptable standard. Steam Page Analyzer’s June 2026 account says the market has moved downward. It cites Devolver Digital’s 2025 investor presentation as showing average spend per game falling from $3 million in 2022 to $2 million in 2024, with a plan to reach roughly $1 million in 2026. Treat that last figure as a stated plan, not a confirmed 2026 average.

Is a publisher worth it in 2026?
A publisher can be worthwhile when its cash or committed services solve a concrete problem the team cannot afford to solve alone. The strongest case is often funding needed to finish the game, especially when console ports, QA, localization or distribution relationships matter. A publisher is a weaker fit if the game is nearly complete and funded, the developer can reach its niche audience directly, or the deal’s principal appeal is relief from marketing anxiety rather than a defined contribution.
Published games do show higher revenue in some comparisons, but those numbers do not prove that signing a publisher causes better sales. VG Insights figures cited by Steam Page Analyzer say third-party-published Steam games are twice as likely to earn at least $5,000 and four times as likely to earn at least $200,000 as self-published games. An Over Powered Game Marketing analysis of 2024 Steam releases found mean revenue twice as high and median revenue five times as high for published games. Publishers select projects they believe can succeed, so selection bias is a major caveat; the gap is not a promise of what a publisher will do for a particular game.
The market is also crowded. Chris Zukowski’s January 2026 tally counted 20,282 Steam releases in 2025, up from 18,477 in 2024; Steam Page Analyzer reports almost half of 2025 releases finished with fewer than 10 reviews. Meanwhile, Alinea Analytics’ figure cited by GamesIndustry.biz puts indie games at about $4.5 billion of Steam revenue in 2025, more than a quarter of the platform total. The revenue opportunity is real but uneven, which is why a publisher’s audience access and launch plan should be specific and contractually clear.
Check the contract before comparing advances
A large advance can be less favorable than a smaller, clearly defined deal. Have an experienced games lawyer review any substantial publishing agreement, especially when recoupment definitions or rights extend beyond this game. Watch for:
- Transfer of IP ownership instead of a limited licence.
- Uncapped recoupable spending, including open-ended marketing or external costs.
- Recoup above 100% without a clearly defined and capped markup. Raw Fury’s published 2020 agreement, for example, described recoupment of funding plus a 15% markup, with external costs deducted from net.
- A perpetual term without a reversion path if the game is not supported or the relationship ends.
- Cross-collateralization, which lets one game’s losses reduce another game’s earnings, or a right of first refusal over all future titles.
- Milestones with vague acceptance standards, no cure period, or payment timing that leaves the studio short of cash.
- Marketing promises without committed spending, named deliverables or a schedule.
Alternatives to a full-service publisher include service deals for specific PR or release-management work, lighter publishing arrangements, and funding-first structures. These are not interchangeable: a fund may provide money and guidance without taking on promotion or distribution, while a service provider may charge for defined work without a lifetime revenue share.
Are there grants for indie game developers?
Yes, but grants are geographically and programmatically specific. Public grants are often the clearest route to funding without equity, revenue share or repayment, but teams pay in application time, eligibility constraints, reporting and uncertainty. Prototype grants can help a team create evidence for a publisher or investor; production grants can cover larger eligible costs if the company and project fit.

What does the UK Games Fund offer?
The UK Games Fund is run by UK Games Talent and Finance CIC, a non-profit, and says it has supported more than 400 projects, helped raise £60 million for indie games programmes, and received over 2,000 applications to date. Its Prototype Fund has run regular rounds since 2015. The fund’s Content Fund page listed expressions of interest as open at the time the programme details were checked.
The Content Fund offers £100,000–£250,000 grants for commercial entertainment games. Applicants must be a UK-registered SME with PAYE employees in UK games development and UK-based founder-directors as significant shareholders. A prototype must exist; the applicant must own the IP or hold an appropriately aligned licence; and gambling elements are excluded. Eligible costs are UK PAYE and contractor costs for hands-on development. Marketing, business development, community management and directors’ loan accounts are not eligible.

Grantees submit monthly progress reports, then an accountant-certified financial report and impact survey. The programme is funded until 31 March 2029, subject to demand and change. Its FAQ says the offer is intended to impose no post-project repayment, revenue share or IP ownership liability; that does not remove the programme’s reporting and leverage requirements.
What about Epic MegaGrants and other regions?
Epic’s MegaGrants programme supports promising community projects involving real-time 3D, including work using Unreal Engine 5 or UEFN and projects that enhance the open-source community. A Plus Games Studio reported on 20 October 2026 that both application windows for 2026 had closed. Current award amounts and dates are not established here, so check the official programme page for the next application period rather than relying on secondary figures.
Other named programmes include Creative Europe MEDIA in the EU and Business Finland in Finland; each has its own eligibility and application rules. Canada Media Fund is also cited as a potential programme, but applicants should confirm current game-funding eligibility on the fund’s own site before building a plan around it. Platform initiatives such as ID@Xbox, PlayStation Indies and the Nintendo Developer Portal may offer support beyond direct cash, so distinguish developer access or promotional opportunities from a guaranteed funding award.
A Plus Games Studio reported a 34% UK Video Games Expenditure Credit for qualifying expenditure on games certified as British. Because official GOV.UK guidance could not be confirmed in the cited material, treat that figure as a secondary-source claim and verify current eligibility and rates with HMRC or a qualified tax adviser. The UK Games Fund also cautions that tax relief on grant-funded expenditure may not be claimable; get professional advice before including the same costs in two funding assumptions.

Kickstarter can be useful when a team already has a reachable audience, a compelling trailer and a realistic plan for delivering rewards. It is primarily a way to convert existing interest into funding and community, not a dependable way to make an unknown game discoverable. Campaign success also creates obligations: physical rewards, stretch goals and frequent public updates can add production work precisely when the team needs to finish the game.
For successful US campaigns, Kickstarter charges a 5% platform fee plus payment-processing fees typically between 3% and 5%, according to its US fees page accessed 30 October 2026. The same page lists processing at 3% plus $0.30 per pledge; pledges under $10 have a micropledge fee of 5% plus $0.08 per pledge. If the campaign does not fund successfully, Kickstarter says it collects no fees. Fees are only one deduction: calculate the fulfilment, shipping, taxes and time needed for each reward tier before setting the goal.

Yaldi Games’ Out and About raised more than £134,000 at over 370% of its goal, according to CGMagazine’s June 2026 account. That result illustrates the potential of an already-engaged audience, not a typical outcome or a success-rate benchmark. No official Kickstarter-wide 2026 game-campaign success rate is established here.
A campaign can also be one stage in a larger plan: use it to validate demand, then seek a publisher or other financing for remaining production and wider distribution. Keep stretch goals within a scope the team can deliver; over-promising features or physical items can turn a funded campaign into a production crisis.

Client work and personal runway
Client work is a common companion to self-funding because it provides income without giving away the game’s rights. The trade-off is divided time and attention. Denis Fedorov, founder of Unfrozen, argued in a September 2026 GamesIndustry.biz interview for keeping 12–18 months of financial runway independent of any single project’s performance. That is a business-planning recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular studio needs or can afford that amount.
The broader employment climate makes contingency planning relevant. GDC’s 2026 State of the Game Industry surveyed more than 2,300 professionals. GamesIndustry.biz reported that 28% of respondents had been laid off in the prior two years, including 33% in the US; one-third of respondents at indie studios said their company had conducted layoffs. These industry-wide figures do not predict an individual team’s prospects, but they underline the danger of relying on one deal or one launch for studio survival.
Early access, small-scale releases and community support
Steam Early Access can generate revenue during development if the game is already enjoyable and the team can communicate and deliver updates consistently. Going quiet after launch risks damaging trust. A free demo brings no direct revenue, but can build wishlists and provide a visible signal of interest for other funding conversations.
On itch.io, sellers choose the platform revenue share from 0% to 100%; the official payment documentation gives 10% as a default example. Payment processing by PayPal or Stripe still applies, typically $0.30 plus 2.9%. Steam Direct charges $100 per new app, recoupable after the app reaches $1,000 in adjusted gross revenue from Steam Store or in-app purchases, according to Valve’s Steamworks documentation. These are distribution costs and revenue options, not substitutes for a production budget.

Platform or subscription deals can offer guarantees for exclusivity, timed exclusivity or day-one inclusion. Compare the guaranteed cash and its payment timing with the sales opportunities and audience access the team would give up elsewhere. A guarantee paid at ship may not solve a development cash gap.
Investors and developer-publishers
Equity investment is more naturally suited to a studio aiming to grow across several games than to a single title, because investors buy a stake in the business and expect growth. In Naavik’s September 2026 account, gaming startup investment had fallen from a cited peak of $12.5 billion to below $2.5 billion by 2024. The report describes developers with successful games recycling some proceeds into new projects, including Outersloth, poncle, Evil Landfall, Kinetic Publishing, Pocketpair Publishing and Aggro Crab Presents. Some operate as funds rather than full-service publishers, so ask whether they provide marketing, distribution and production services or primarily capital and guidance.

Naavik reports that Aggro Crab was looking at games below $500,000, while Kinetic and Evil Landfall had tickets up to roughly $1 million per game. It also says Outersloth had put roughly $19 million to work across two dozen projects as of 2026, and estimates the cohort could deploy $30–50 million annually. Those sums do not close the broader $2–$20 million budget gap Naavik identifies. Griffin Gaming Partners’ official Special Opportunities Fund describes itself as a $100 million fund for promising indie games; Naavik characterizes its deals as project-level rather than equity. The fund asks for a pitch deck and budget, playable build, and 10–15 minutes of gameplay footage.
What do funders want to see before investing?
Across grants, publishers and project-finance funds, a convincing package is more than a pitch deck. Prepare evidence that the game is distinctive, that the team can finish it and that the requested money maps to a credible production plan.
- A playable vertical slice: show the core loop at the intended quality, not just a concept or a collection of features.
- A clear hook: explain the game in one sentence and make the appeal legible in roughly 10 seconds of footage.
- A realistic budget and milestone plan: show costs, schedule, buffers and when money is required. Tie payments to concrete, objectively reviewable deliverables.
- Evidence of interest: bring wishlists, followers, playtest feedback, a mailing list, festival response or an existing community where available.
- A team that can deliver: show shipped work or a credible prototype and production plan, with responsibilities and capacity clear.
Requirements vary: Griffin’s fund requests a deck, budget, playable build and 10–15 minutes of gameplay footage; the UK Content Fund requires a prototype. A polished package cannot overcome a mismatch with a programme’s geography, genre or eligibility rules, so confirm those before spending months on an application.
Which funding mix fits a small indie team?
Choose the stack around the project’s current stage and the studio’s capacity to carry risk. These examples are starting points, not fixed recipes:
- Solo developer or duo making a first commercial game: retain part-time or client income, use savings to build a focused prototype, apply for a small relevant grant, and consider a targeted campaign or early access only when the game and audience are ready.
- Experienced small team with a shipped title: use the track record and audience evidence to pursue a publisher or platform fund for specific production needs; consider a grant for a defined experimental slice rather than assuming one source must pay for everything.
- Studio building long-term IP: combine recurring co-development work between milestones with selective publisher or project-finance relationships; use crowdfunding for a community-led campaign or special edition only if fulfilment will not derail production.
Compare each offer by the cash available when needed, the amount and type of recoupment, the rights granted, the work actually committed, and the runway remaining if the game slips. A modest deal with clear milestones and capped costs can protect the studio better than a larger advance with vague acceptance terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a game take part in Steam Next Fest more than once?
No. Valve’s eligibility guidance, as summarized by Webtech360, says an eligible game can participate in only one Next Fest edition. Treat the event as a one-time demand-building opportunity and choose the edition that best fits the game’s readiness.
Does Steam Direct’s fee apply to every game update?
No. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes a $100 fee per new app, not per update; it can be recouped after the app reaches $1,000 in adjusted gross revenue from Steam Store or in-app purchases.
Can I use UK Games Fund Content Fund money to pay for marketing?
No, marketing is listed as an ineligible cost, alongside business development, community management and directors’ loan accounts. The programme’s eligible-cost rules focus on UK PAYE and contractor costs for hands-on development.
Is a developer-publisher the same as a traditional publisher?
Not necessarily. Some developer-led funds primarily provide project money and guidance, while a full-service publisher may also handle marketing, QA, localization and distribution relationships. Confirm the actual services and responsibilities in the proposed agreement.
