Yes, it can be possible—but not on every Google Meet computer, and not safely with a universal installer. “Google Meet computer” may mean a retail Chromebox, a managed Meet Compute System, an integrated Chromebase, or a third-party room appliance. Identify the exact model first, then verify its processor, firmware, storage, graphics, and drivers.
The safest approach is to use a replaceable second SSD, install Windows in UEFI mode, reserve unallocated space for SteamOS, and avoid any recovery option that wipes the disk. Replacing the original software can also end the device’s managed Google Meet room functionality.

Identify the computer before installing anything
A retail Chromebox running ordinary ChromeOS is different from a Google Meet Compute System. A Meet room system may include a computer, camera, speakers, microphones, and a touch controller, all managed through Google Workspace. An integrated Chromebase or third-party certified appliance can have still different firmware and peripherals.
Google’s supported documentation does not treat Meet hardware as a normal, freely interchangeable ChromeOS computer. Google also says ordinary ChromeOS Chromeboxes cannot simply be converted into Meet hardware through the supported enrollment process, and Meet hardware is not intended to become an ordinary ChromeOS device through the normal setup path. Those rules describe supported operation—not an absolute technical prohibition against replacing storage or firmware.

Before changing anything, record:
- Manufacturer, model, serial number, CPU, RAM, and storage type.
- BIOS or UEFI version and whether USB boot is available.
- Whether the storage is replaceable M.2, SATA, or soldered eMMC.
- Video outputs, USB ports, networking hardware, and cooling arrangement.
- How the camera, microphones, speakers, and touch controller connect.
Google describes room systems as combinations of a computer and dedicated room peripherals. Those accessories may not work after Windows or SteamOS replaces the managed Meet environment. See Google’s Meet hardware overview and its supported-device guidance.
What you may lose
Installing another operating system will normally remove the original managed Meet workflow. The computer may no longer:
- Boot into the Meet room interface.
- Enroll normally in the Google Admin console.
- Use its room calendar association.
- Receive Meet hardware updates.
- Remain covered by the organization’s support or licensing arrangement.
- Operate as a certified room endpoint.
Do not modify a device that is still owned or managed by a school, employer, or other organization. Confirm that it has been released from Google Admin management and that you are legally entitled to repurpose it. Meet hardware enrollment and licensing are described in Google’s current administration documentation.

SteamOS is most plausible on an x86-64 Intel or AMD computer with UEFI firmware, USB boot, an SSD, and graphics hardware with usable Linux and Vulkan support. Valve’s older community documentation lists a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, a 200 GB-or-larger drive, graphics support, USB installation capability, and recommended UEFI firmware. Valve labels that requirements information as outdated, so treat it as historical guidance rather than a 2026 compatibility guarantee. See the SteamOS installation wiki.

For a dual-boot gaming machine, 8–16 GB of RAM and a practical SSD are much more sensible than the historical minimum. A low-power conference appliance may handle indie games, older PC titles, emulation where legally configured, and streaming from another computer. It may be a poor choice for modern AAA games, VR, high-refresh gaming, or titles needing strong DirectX 12 performance.
Good, marginal, and poor candidates
| Candidate | Typical signs | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Good | x86-64 CPU, replaceable SSD, 8–16 GB RAM, UEFI USB boot, known Intel or AMD graphics support | Reasonable advanced experiment |
| Marginal | 4 GB RAM, small eMMC, locked firmware, unknown Wi-Fi or proprietary room peripherals | Try only with a complete recovery plan |
| Poor | ARM processor, insufficient non-replaceable storage, no USB boot, active enterprise management, or valuable production room function | Do not attempt |
Can Windows and SteamOS dual-boot?
Sometimes technically, but not universally or officially guaranteed. Older Valve documentation describes an Expert installation mode that can support dual-booting. Current recovery workflows are more concerning: a July 2026 report in Valve’s SteamOS repository warns that the normal recovery installer may assume control of the disk and can be dangerous on multi-drive or multi-boot systems. That issue report is not a universal rule for every image, but it is enough to require caution.
Community tools such as the unofficial SteamOS dual-boot installer patch attempt to install SteamOS into prepared unallocated space. Its documentation describes Windows partition shrinking as a prerequisite and lists limited tested hardware. It is community software, not a Valve-supported guarantee.

- Separate SSDs: best for recovery and troubleshooting.
- A replacement SSD with a full image backup: acceptable for experienced users.
- One drive with Windows and SteamOS partitions: possible, but easier to damage.
- Small or soldered eMMC storage: generally not worth the risk.
Safe preparation
- Photograph labels, ports, and the original setup.
- Confirm ownership and removal from Google Admin management.
- Save any original recovery information and create a full disk image if possible.
- Obtain a second SSD if the chassis supports one.
- Prepare a wired USB keyboard and mouse; Bluetooth devices may not work in firmware.
- Keep a second computer and Windows recovery USB available.
In firmware, document UEFI versus legacy mode, Secure Boot, USB boot, one-time boot selection, storage visibility, and firmware write protection. The old SteamOS guidance recommends UEFI and discusses disabling Secure Boot for its older installation method, but no single setting should be assumed for every current image.
Install Windows first
Windows should generally be installed before SteamOS. Create official Windows installation media, boot it in UEFI mode, and install only to the intended drive. Then install chipset, graphics, network, audio, and USB drivers from the underlying computer manufacturer or chipset vendor—not merely from the Google Meet product name.
Test the display, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB ports, camera, microphones, speakers, sleep, and shutdown. Windows may install successfully while leaving proprietary room hardware unusable. A valid Windows license or existing entitlement may also be required.

Before changing partitions:
- Save the BitLocker recovery key. Check it with
manage-bde -protectors -get C:, suspend protection, and resume it only after both systems boot correctly. - Disable Fast Startup. One simple option is
powercfg /h off; restore hibernation later withpowercfg /h on. - Create Windows recovery media and back up the completed installation.
- Open Disk Management, shrink the Windows volume, and leave the resulting area as unallocated space.
Win + R followed by msinfo32 can show the current BIOS Mode. Do not use destructive commands such as diskpart clean, wipefs -a, or whole-disk imaging commands in a beginner workflow.

Prepare and install SteamOS
Use the current SteamOS image from Valve’s official distribution channel and write it to a reputable USB drive with a trusted imaging utility. Verify which kind of image you have:
- A recovery image intended to reimage a Steam Deck or another supported device.
- A general PC installer, if one is provided for the target hardware.
- An unofficial community installer or patch.
These are not interchangeable. If the installer offers only automatic recovery or Wipe Device, stop when Windows is on that disk. Valve’s multi-boot recovery issue report specifically documents the danger of assuming that workflow will preserve another operating system.
Only continue if the selected image provides a reliable custom or expert partitioning path:

- Identify the target disk by its model and capacity.
- Confirm that the Windows partitions are still present.
- Select only the previously created unallocated space.
- Create SteamOS partitions there.
- Allow bootloader changes only when the installer clearly identifies the correct EFI System Partition.
- Reboot and test Windows and SteamOS independently.
If any screen is ambiguous, cancel and use a separate blank SSD or a conventional Linux distribution with mature manual partitioning. There is no safe universal partition recipe for every Meet appliance and every SteamOS image.

Browser-based Google Meet may still work on Windows or a compatible Linux distribution, but that is ordinary browser Meet—not the managed Meet hardware experience. Google lists Windows, ChromeOS, Ubuntu, and other Debian-based Linux distributions among supported computer platforms, subject to browser and hardware requirements. Meet effects also depend on browser support, WebGL, graphics acceleration, and the computer’s performance. See Google’s platform requirements and effects requirements.
Troubleshooting
USB boot does not appear
Enable external boot, try another USB port or drive, use a wired keyboard, recreate the installation media, and confirm that the USB is booted in UEFI mode. Enterprise restrictions or ChromeOS firmware may prevent external boot.
The installer offers only a wipe option
Stop. Do not continue on a Windows disk. Use a separate blank drive or a verified custom-install workflow.
Windows disappears from the boot menu
Check the firmware’s EFI entries and use Windows installation media’s Startup Repair. First confirm that the Windows partitions remain intact.
Wi-Fi, audio, or room peripherals fail
Use Ethernet during setup, identify the actual chipset, and check its Windows and Linux driver support. Camera, microphone, speaker, and touch hardware may be proprietary. Standard USB replacements are often more practical than trying to recreate the original room system.
Games run poorly
Integrated graphics, weak cooling, and thermal throttling are common limitations. Lower resolution and settings, check fan behavior, and use Windows for games requiring DirectX, anti-cheat, or vendor-specific drivers. A gaming-oriented Linux distribution such as Bazzite or Fedora KDE may offer more transparent PC hardware support than a SteamOS recovery image, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Quick Recap
Better alternatives
- Keep ChromeOS and stream games: sensible when the appliance is too weak for local gaming.
- Install Windows only: best when known-good drivers matter more than a console-style interface.
- Use another Linux distribution: often easier for manual partitioning and hardware troubleshooting.
- Buy or repurpose a conventional mini-PC: usually the better gaming-appliance choice because firmware, storage, and drivers are documented.
- Keep the Meet system intact: attach another computer where the room’s display and peripherals support that arrangement.
