It is a new PlayStation 5 franchise set thousands of years in the future, starring Jordan A. Mun on Sempiria. Naughty Dog says it is applying lessons from its earlier games to create its deepest gameplay yet, but the studio has not revealed a feature list, release date, price or open-world structure.
What is confirmed about Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet?
Naughty Dog announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a new intellectual property in development for PlayStation 5. The announcement positions it as a fresh franchise rather than another chapter in The Last of Us or Uncharted. Naughty Dog says the project will deliver “the deepest gameplay in Naughty Dog’s history,” drawing on lessons from its previous franchises and pushing them further. That is an explicit design ambition, not a list of confirmed mechanics.

PlayStation’s official description establishes the setting and lead character. The story takes place thousands of years in the future on the planet Sempiria, where players control Jordan A. Mun. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are attached to the soundtrack. PlayStation also says development began in 2020, meaning the project has been in production for several years even though public details remain limited.
In a September 2026 studio update, Neil Druckmann said the team was “heads down on what is shaping up to be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious game yet.” He promised a proper look at Jordan’s adventure in a future full reveal. That statement confirms active development and signals that the public information set is still incomplete. It does not announce a launch window, preorder, price or retail edition.

The comparison point: what The Last of Us Part II actually delivers
The Last of Us Part II is a released survival-action game. Sony Interactive Entertainment launched it on June 19, 2020. Its official story description follows Ellie after she has built a settled life in Jackson and then leaves on a revenge and closure quest. The cycle of violence creates escalating moral conflicts rather than a simple hero-versus-villain adventure.
Its gameplay is documented in detail. The core loop combines stealth, melee combat, shooting, scavenging, crafting and character upgrades. Naughty Dog overhauled the engine, added new combat mechanics and introduced a new analog stealth system. Environments provide more verticality and player choice than the first game, while human enemies communicate and react to their surroundings so that hiding, repositioning and direct confrontation remain connected decisions.
Official previews describe specific systems:
- Ellie can go prone and use tall grass to conceal herself.
- Guard dogs can follow her scent, making a previously safe hiding route dangerous.
- Shamblers add a distinct infected threat with their own attack pressure.
- Skill paths let players emphasize survival, crafting or stealth.
- Craftable pistol silencers create additional options for quiet encounters.
The PS5 Remastered edition adds the randomized No Return mode, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Speedrun Mode, visual and performance improvements, DualSense support and additional accessibility features. Those additions matter when comparing the games’ current platform offerings: Part II is a finished product with a defined feature set, while Intergalactic is still being made.

Setting and genre: grounded survival drama versus far-future science fiction
The Last of Us Part II’s post-pandemic realism
Part II builds tension from recognizable places and practical limitations. Jackson is a functioning settlement, while Seattle becomes a dangerous journey through hostile survivor groups, scarce resources and evolved infected. The world feels physically understandable: cover, sightlines, ammunition, workbenches and materials all shape what Ellie can attempt in a given encounter.
That grounded framework supports the game’s dramatic themes. Violence has bodily consequences, every faction has a social context, and the environment reinforces the cost of survival. Even when the game becomes spectacular, its rules remain those of a harsh, plausible world.
Intergalactic’s confirmed science-fiction premise
Intergalactic moves the fantasy thousands of years forward and places Jordan on Sempiria. That single change creates a fundamentally different design space. Technology, architecture, transport, social organization and threats could all look unlike anything in Part II. However, none of those details has been officially shown. The setting confirms science fiction; it does not confirm a specific technology level, faction system, planetary structure or traversal model.
It is reasonable to expect the setting to influence exploration and encounter design, but those are possibilities rather than announced features. Until Naughty Dog’s promised fuller reveal, descriptions such as “open world,” “space opera,” “role-playing game” or “survival crafting game” go beyond the official record.
Protagonists and dramatic engines
Ellie’s established arc
Part II gives players a clearly defined emotional objective from the outset. Ellie leaves the security of Jackson to pursue justice and revenge, and the journey repeatedly challenges the idea that violence can provide closure. The narrative alternates personal motivation with broader consequences, making the player confront how the same event looks from different perspectives.
Rank #2
Because Ellie’s history, relationships and skills are known, the mechanics can be tuned around her established identity. Stealth expresses caution and vulnerability; close combat communicates desperation; upgrades represent adaptation during a sustained journey. The game’s systems and story are designed around a protagonist whose past is already part of the player’s understanding.
Jordan A. Mun is an open question
Jordan is confirmed as Intergalactic’s protagonist, but Naughty Dog has not yet published a full biography, objective, supporting cast or character arc. Even the title’s subtitle, The Heretic Prophet, does not by itself establish what Jordan believes, whom she opposes or what the word “prophet” means in the story.
This lack of information is important when discussing similarities. Intergalactic may continue Naughty Dog’s tradition of intimate, character-led storytelling, but there is no evidence that Jordan’s journey is a revenge plot, a survival tale or a direct thematic continuation of Ellie’s. The responsible comparison is that both games center a single protagonist in a highly authored adventure; their specific dramatic engines remain different until Naughty Dog explains Jordan’s mission.

Gameplay: documented systems versus a deliberately broad promise
What Part II lets the player do
Part II’s encounters are built around a chain of choices. The player can observe patrol routes, crawl through grass, use vertical spaces, distract or eliminate threats, craft supplies, and switch between quiet and loud approaches. Going prone changes how Ellie uses cover. Dogs can track her scent, so simply remaining hidden may not be enough. Human enemies communicate and search, which means one mistake can alter the entire encounter instead of triggering a static alarm.
When stealth breaks down, the game supports fluid movement, intense melee combat and firearms. Crafting pistol silencers, ammunition and other items extends the range of possible approaches. Skill paths let players invest in survival, crafting or stealth, so two players can reach the same story sequence with different priorities and resources.
What Naughty Dog has promised for Intergalactic
“This will be the deepest gameplay in Naughty Dog’s history, taking our learnings from our previous franchises and pushing them beyond anything we’ve ever done before,” the studio said in its announcement. The statement establishes intent: the team wants Intergalactic to build on prior design knowledge rather than discard it.
It does not establish whether the game includes stealth takedowns, crafting benches, weapon modification, skill trees, party commands, vehicle travel, aerial movement or any other named system. None of those features should be presented as confirmed. “Deeper” could refer to combat, exploration, character progression, systemic interactions, narrative reactivity or a combination of elements that have not yet been shown.

There is no official confirmation. Naughty Dog’s statement about carrying lessons forward makes stealth and crafting plausible subjects for comparison, but plausibility is not evidence. Part II’s exact systems—prone movement, scent-tracking dogs, pistol silencers, skill paths and its specific crafting economy—belong to that game’s documented design. Intergalactic should be treated as unknown on each point until footage or a detailed developer explanation confirms otherwise.

Combat and stealth: where the comparison is useful, and where it stops
The safest comparison is at the level of design philosophy. Naughty Dog has demonstrated that it values encounters in which observation, movement and resource decisions matter. Part II’s analog stealth, vertical environments and communicating enemies show how the studio turns a cinematic scene into a flexible problem. The announcement suggests that Intergalactic will extend that accumulated expertise.
The unsafe leap is to assume identical controls or enemy behavior. A far-future setting could support tools and threats that have no equivalent in Part II, but the nature of those tools has not been disclosed. There is no confirmed melee model, ranged weapon list, health system, enemy artificial intelligence, inventory structure or difficulty framework for Intergalactic.
Fans evaluating future trailers should look for evidence rather than familiar labels. A revealed encounter can answer whether Jordan hides, improvises, scans, negotiates, uses companions or relies on equipment. Until such footage appears, “Naughty Dog-style stealth” describes a lineage, not a specification.

What Part II’s environments establish
Naughty Dog’s official gameplay material describes broader environments with more verticality and player choice than earlier entries. Players can search side spaces, choose routes through encounters and use terrain to break line of sight. Those qualities make the spaces feel more flexible, but the official material does not require calling Part II an open-world game.
What is unknown about Sempiria
Intergalactic’s planet-wide setting has led to speculation about an open world, space travel or large-scale exploration. None of those claims is confirmed. The available descriptions identify Sempiria and the time period, but they do not state whether players move through one connected map, a sequence of authored areas, multiple planets or a hub-and-mission structure.
Until Naughty Dog provides a map, traversal footage or a direct statement, the accurate answer to “Is Intergalactic open world?” is: not announced. The same applies to mounts, vehicles, fast travel, vertical cities and orbital travel.

Part II’s tone comes from intimate grief, moral uncertainty and the physical danger of a collapsed society. Its soundtrack, performances and violence are arranged around Ellie’s changing understanding of revenge and responsibility. The setting is speculative, but the emotional language is deliberately close to contemporary human experience.

Intergalactic can preserve Naughty Dog’s character-driven approach while changing the surrounding vocabulary. A far-future world may let the studio explore belief, identity, isolation, technological dependence or competing visions of civilization. Those are thematic possibilities, not announced plot points. What is confirmed is that Jordan’s adventure will be presented in a new science-fiction setting and that Reznor and Ross are attached to the music.

The appointment of those composers signals an important production emphasis: sound will be a major part of the game’s identity. It does not tell us whether the score will be atmospheric, electronic, orchestral or heavily integrated with gameplay. Specific musical style and narrative themes remain to be shown.
Technology and editions
Part II demonstrates Naughty Dog’s willingness to revise technology between releases. Its gameplay reveal highlighted an overhauled engine, new combat mechanics and a new analog stealth system. The PS5 Remastered edition then added performance and visual improvements, DualSense features and expanded accessibility options, alongside No Return and other extras.
Intergalactic is being developed for PS5, so its technical target is a current-generation console rather than a confirmed cross-generation release. Naughty Dog has not announced a PS4 version, PC edition, multiplayer component, special edition or remaster plan. The only confirmed platform in the available material is PlayStation 5.

What Naughty Dog’s next reveal needs to answer
Naughty Dog has said a fuller look at Jordan’s adventure is coming. The most useful details for players will be concrete demonstrations rather than broad comparisons:
- What is Jordan’s immediate objective, and how does it change over the story?
- Is Sempiria presented as one connected world, several regions or a mission-based sequence?
- What are the basic encounter verbs: stealth, melee, shooting, dialogue, hacking, scanning or something else?
- Does the game include crafting, inventory management, skill progression or equipment upgrades?
- How do enemies detect and respond to Jordan?
- Are companions, factions or non-combat solutions part of the playable design?
- Which accessibility settings will be available at launch?
- What are the release date, edition structure and pricing?
These answers will determine whether Intergalactic resembles Part II mechanically, merely shares Naughty Dog’s cinematic priorities, or represents a much larger departure.
Is Intergalactic another Last of Us-style game?
It depends on what “style” means. If the phrase refers to authored storytelling, a central protagonist and detailed third-person gameplay, the comparison is reasonable as a description of Naughty Dog’s established craft. If it means a confirmed post-apocalyptic survival loop with Ellie-like stealth, scavenging, crafting and revenge themes, the evidence does not support that conclusion.
Intergalactic is best understood as Naughty Dog carrying its character-driven, cinematic approach into science fiction. It is a new franchise with its own setting and protagonist, not a sequel marketed under a different name. The studio’s promise of deeper gameplay invites comparison, but the actual mechanics must wait for the full reveal.
Bottom line for fans deciding what to expect
The Last of Us Part II offers a known, released experience: Ellie’s revenge-and-closure story in a grounded post-pandemic world, supported by documented stealth, melee, firearms, crafting and skill upgrades. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet offers a confirmed premise but an incomplete feature list: Jordan A. Mun, Sempiria, a setting thousands of years ahead and a PS5 development target, with Naughty Dog promising its deepest gameplay yet.
The meaningful difference is not simply zombies versus spaceships. It is certainty versus possibility. Part II can be judged by systems players can use today. Intergalactic can currently be judged only by its premise, its creative team and Naughty Dog’s stated ambition. Until the promised full presentation arrives, any claim about open-world design, specific weapons, crafting, combat systems, launch timing or price remains unconfirmed.
