To invite a Steam friend from SteamOS, launch the game, open the Steam Overlay, open Friends, select the person, and choose the invite, party, or matchmaking command that the game provides. If the title supports Remote Play Together, choose Remote Play Together instead. The friend accepts the request through Steam and then joins the host’s session. SteamOS does not add one universal invite button: the exact wording and location depend on the game’s Steamworks integration.
How do I invite friends to a Steam game from SteamOS?
The reliable path on a Steam Deck or another SteamOS system is the in-game Steam Overlay. The game must be running, the friend must already be in your Steam Friends list, and the title must expose an invitation or lobby feature.

- Start the game from SteamOS Gaming Mode.
- Open the Steam Overlay while the game is running. On a desktop keyboard, Steam documents Shift+Tab as the default shortcut; on SteamOS, use the controller shortcut currently mapped to the overlay.
- Open the Friends list in the overlay.
- Select the friend you want to invite.
- Choose the command shown by the game, such as Invite to Game, Invite to Party, or a matchmaking/lobby option.
- Have the friend accept the invitation. The game then places them in the session according to its own rules.
If the friend’s menu includes Remote Play Together, use that command for a supported local co-op session rather than the ordinary multiplayer invite.
What do I need before sending the invitation?
Most failed invitations trace back to one of four prerequisites: the friend relationship, the game’s multiplayer implementation, the overlay, or the network connection.

The friend must be in Friends
Add or accept the person through Steam Friends & Chat before opening the game menu. A friend who is not signed in, or who is not yet in your list, may not appear as an available invite target.
The game must support an invitation route
Steam provides the overlay and social tools, but each developer decides which Steamworks features the title uses. A game may offer an overlay invite, require a lobby to be created first, or put all invitations inside its own multiplayer screen.

The host and guest need a working Steam connection
Firewall, router, school, workplace, and proxy policies can interfere with invitations, voice chat, or Remote Play traffic. Steam documents separate network requirements for those services, so a connection that is sufficient for browsing the store may still block a game session.
Where is the Steam invite button on SteamOS?
There is no system-wide button with one fixed label. Open the overlay, select the friend, and look for the action supplied by that particular game.
In Gaming Mode, press the Steam Deck control assigned to open the overlay while the game is active. SteamOS can use a controller mapping instead of the desktop keyboard shortcut. If the overlay opens, the Friends list is available from the social area; the game-specific invite command appears only when the title exposes it.
On a keyboard in SteamOS Desktop Mode, Steam’s documented default is Shift+Tab. If that shortcut has been changed, use the configured binding shown in the Steam client. Overlay controls are customizable, so two systems can show different input prompts even when they run the same game.

How do I use Remote Play Together on Steam Deck?
Remote Play Together is a separate Steam feature for supported local co-op games. The host launches the game, opens the overlay, selects a friend, chooses Remote Play Together, and waits for acceptance. Steam states that a guest can join a supported local co-op session without owning or launching the game.
- Open the game’s Steam store page before starting if you need to verify support. The feature list identifies titles that support Remote Play Together.
- Launch the title from SteamOS Gaming Mode.
- Open the Steam Overlay.
- Open Friends and select the intended guest.
- Open the friend’s context menu. Steam’s documented desktop sequence uses a right-click, while the Deck presents the equivalent controller context action.
- Select Remote Play Together.
- Wait for the friend to accept. Once accepted, Steam connects the guest to the host’s local co-op session.
This method is not a replacement for every online multiplayer system. It is intended for games whose local co-op input and display can be streamed through Steam. A title without the Remote Play Together indicator must use its ordinary online, party, or lobby workflow instead.
What is the difference between a normal Steam invite and Remote Play Together?
Choose the normal invite when the game’s own multiplayer system expects both players to join through its online service. Choose Remote Play Together when the game supports that feature and you want Steam to connect a guest to a local co-op session.
| Method | Game support | Control path | Ownership and launch | Typical session | Common failure point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard game invite | Title-specific Steamworks invite, party, matchmaking, or lobby integration | Steam Overlay > Friends, or the game’s multiplayer menu | Follows the game’s normal ownership and account rules | Online multiplayer, party, or matchmaking session | Game requires a lobby or does not implement overlay invitations |
| Remote Play Together | Title must show the Remote Play Together feature | Steam Overlay > Friends > friend’s context menu > Remote Play Together | Host runs the game; a guest can join without owning or launching it | Supported local co-op session streamed from the host | Unsupported title, overlay problem, or network restrictions |
Why does the invite option vary by game?
Steam’s overlay is a shared framework, not a universal multiplayer interface. Developers choose which Steamworks components to integrate and how those components appear in their menus.
Games with direct overlay invitations
Some titles expose an invite action directly from a friend’s entry in the overlay. Selecting it sends the game-specific request without requiring a separate lobby screen.
Games that require a lobby first
Other titles require the host to enter the game’s multiplayer menu, create a lobby, and then invite from that lobby. In those games, the overlay may show Friends but no game invite command until the lobby exists.
Games with their own party or matchmaking flow
A title may use labels such as Invite to Party, Join Game, or Invite Players. These are still invitations, but the controls and acceptance screen belong to the game’s implementation rather than to SteamOS itself.

When the expected button is missing, check the game’s Steam store feature list and its own multiplayer menu before changing SteamOS settings. The absence of a button can be normal behavior for that title.
What should I do if the Steam Overlay does not open?
First verify the global and per-game overlay switches, then use the shortcut that is actually configured for your SteamOS controls.
- Open Steam > Settings > In-Game and enable Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Open Library > game > Properties > General and enable the game’s overlay option.
- Start the game after changing the setting; an already-running session may not pick up the change until it is relaunched.
- Use the SteamOS controller binding for the overlay. Shift+Tab is Steam’s desktop default, not a guarantee that the same physical input is mapped on a handheld.
- If the overlay appears but the Friends panel does not, check that Steam is online and that the client has finished signing in.
Why is there no invite option beside my friend?
The game may not support overlay-based invitations, or it may require a lobby, party, or matchmaking queue first. Open the game’s own multiplayer menu and create the required session before checking the overlay again.
Remote Play Together appears only for games that support it. Confirm the feature indicator on the game’s Steam store page; an ordinary multiplayer listing does not imply Remote Play Together support.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can my friend not be invited?
Check the Steam account relationship before troubleshooting the game. A limited Steam account can receive friend invitations but cannot send them. Add or accept the friend through Friends & Chat, then retry the game invitation from the host account.
If the friend is listed but unavailable, confirm that the person is signed in and that both clients are connected to Steam. A friend who has gone offline may not be eligible for the game’s current invite flow.
What happens when the game is marked private?
Steam says that inviting a friend to a private game can expose your in-game status to that friend until you leave the game or disconnect from Steam. This visibility is tied to the invitation and ends when the session or Steam connection ends.

How do I fix Remote Play or invitation failures caused by the network?
Separate the problem into Steam access, game traffic, voice chat, and Remote Play. A firewall or managed network can allow the Steam client to sign in while blocking one of those services.
- Temporarily check whether a firewall, router rule, school network, workplace network, or proxy is blocking Steam traffic.
- Confirm that the host and friend are both signed in and that the game is fully running before sending the request.
- For Remote Play, prefer a wired connection where practical. Steam recommends wired networking for the best streaming experience, while noting that actual results vary by network.
- If standard multiplayer works but Remote Play does not, troubleshoot Remote Play traffic separately rather than changing the game’s account or lobby settings.
- If neither method works, return to the overlay and game-support checks: an invitation cannot succeed when the title does not implement the selected feature.
Which invitation method should I choose?
Use this decision path to avoid sending the wrong kind of request.
- If the game is an online multiplayer title with its own party or matchmaking system, open that system or use the standard invite shown in the overlay.
- If the game’s store page shows Remote Play Together and the session is local co-op, select Remote Play Together from the friend’s context menu.
- If neither option appears, create the game’s lobby first and check its multiplayer menu for the invitation command.
- If the command exists but fails, check account status, overlay settings, and network restrictions in that order.
What should the invited friend do?
The friend should remain signed in to Steam on a supported device and accept the incoming request through Steam. For an ordinary game invite, the title may open its party or lobby screen after acceptance; for Remote Play Together, Steam connects the guest to the host’s local co-op session.
If no acceptance prompt appears, the friend should inspect Friends & Chat and the Steam Overlay rather than launching a second copy of the game. The game’s invitation design determines where the final confirmation appears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does SteamOS change the game’s multiplayer rules?
No. SteamOS changes the control surface and shortcut you use to reach Steam’s overlay, but ownership requirements, lobby creation, matchmaking, and supported player counts remain determined by the game and its Steamworks integration.

The practical difference on a Steam Deck is input: Gaming Mode uses the configured controller mapping, while desktop documentation describes Shift+Tab. Once the overlay is open, the available invite actions are the same Steam features exposed for that title.
Key points to remember
- The Steam Overlay is the main Steam-level route to Friends and game invitations.
- The exact invite label depends on the individual game’s Steamworks integration.
- Remote Play Together is a separate option for supported local co-op games.
- Limited accounts can receive friend invitations but cannot send them.
- Overlay configuration, game support, account status, and network restrictions are the main troubleshooting checks.
Steam’s support documentation and client labels can change, and the guidance above reflects the documented behavior available on October 29, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Can the invited friend use a different operating system?
The invitation is tied to the Steam account and the game’s supported session rather than to SteamOS branding. The friend still needs to be signed in on a device supported by Steam and by the game, and the title’s own multiplayer rules determine whether that device can join.
Why does accepting an invite sometimes open the game instead of joining immediately?
Some games accept the Steam request first and then require a second confirmation in their party or lobby screen. That extra step is controlled by the game’s integration, not by the SteamOS overlay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I keep using the Deck’s controls after Remote Play Together starts?
The host continues to use the game’s normal controls. Remote Play Together forwards the supported local co-op inputs through Steam, so the number and type of usable controls depend on the title’s local multiplayer design.
Where can I confirm that a title supports Remote Play Together before launching it?
Open the title’s Steam store page and inspect its feature indicators in the game details. The Remote Play Together label is the relevant confirmation; a generic multiplayer label is not enough.
