An iRacing CPU bottleneck occurs when processor-side work—not the graphics card alone—limits frame delivery or the simulator’s ability to keep up in real time. The CPU warning is a signal to investigate, not proof that your processor is faulty or needs replacing. Start by checking background load, AI and car counts, cooling, software, and frame pacing; upgrade only if the evidence points to a processor or platform limit.
What an iRacing CPU bottleneck means
iRacing has two related performance concerns: delivering frames smoothly and completing simulation work in real time. A CPU can limit either, but the warning by itself does not identify the cause. iRacing says its CPU warning indicates that a system may not be keeping up in real time, with potential multiplayer networking issues. Introduced in 2025 Season 3, it appears in the network warning box as a CPU icon and color-coded usage value. iRacing’s CPU warning guidance describes what the alert means.
There is no universal total-CPU-utilization percentage that proves a bottleneck. The official guidance does not give a per-core cutoff either. Treat the warning and symptoms such as frame drops or stutter as evidence to investigate, then change one variable at a time and see whether the problem improves.
How to diagnose the cause
Check other processes first
- Open Windows Task Manager and look for applications using substantial CPU time while iRacing is running.
- Close unnecessary programs and browser tabs; disable startup apps you do not need during a session.
- Update iRacing, Windows, and relevant drivers. Check that the simulator is not running in Efficiency Mode.
- Inspect cooling and dust, and review Windows power settings. If other evidence suggests unwanted software, check for malware.
These checks address causes iRacing lists for high CPU usage; none alone establishes that the processor is the limiting component. See iRacing’s troubleshooting recommendations.

Check whether the workload is the trigger
In AI sessions, reduce the number of AI cars and compare performance. iRacing says each AI car adds load. If stutters occur as more cars enter view, reduce both the maximum car count and the number of cars rendered; rendering work depends in part on car count. These are practical load reductions, not a standardized bottleneck test. iRacing’s stutter guidance covers these settings.
Use the in-game meters and capture the symptom
If the issue continues, enable iRacing’s in-game performance meters and note when the problem appears—for example, at the start, in a full field, or in a particular camera or display mode. Its guidance also recommends testing graphics configuration, display mode, background applications, and hardware or USB conditions. For a support report, provide a replay and video showing the issue. Consult the stutter troubleshooting steps.

Settings changes that can help
Reduce CPU-side session and rendering work
- Use fewer AI cars in AI sessions.
- Lower Max Cars and the number of cars rendered when fields trigger stutter.
- Test selected shadow and lighting settings if the problem persists.
Change settings individually where possible so you can tell which adjustment matters. The appropriate compromise depends on the session and the visual settings you want to retain. iRacing’s recommendations for stuttering include these options.
Try a stable frame-rate cap
A consistent cap can avoid swings in frame delivery. iRacing offers 120 FPS as a rule of thumb for a 60 Hz monitor; for higher-refresh displays, it generally suggests a cap at the display’s refresh rate. Some users may prefer a cap 2–5 FPS below refresh. These are tuning suggestions, not guaranteed fixes; choose a cap your system can sustain in the sessions you actually drive. Read iRacing’s frame-rate guidance.

Do not use FSR as a CPU-load fix
iRacing says FSR resolution scaling reduces processing required from the graphics card, but does not reduce CPU load. It may be relevant to a GPU-side limitation, not as a remedy for processor-side work. iRacing explains FSR’s performance effect here.

iRacing’s published CPU tiers are a broad guide to capability, not an FPS guarantee. The requirements page describes the minimum as suitable for minimum graphics in test mode, the recommended tier as supporting dirt and asphalt sessions at medium settings, and high-end hardware as targeting high settings. Its listed core counts are:

When a CPU upgrade is reasonable
Consider a processor upgrade only after reversible troubleshooting and observation point to processor-side limits. Before buying, check motherboard socket and BIOS compatibility, memory support, cooling capacity, the refresh rate you are targeting, and the session sizes you care about. A core-count tier alone cannot identify the best CPU for your system, and the cited requirements do not establish a best-value model.

If the evidence points to a GPU-side limitation instead, a CPU purchase may not address it. Likewise, reducing AI or rendered cars may be a more appropriate first trade-off if the issue appears primarily in large fields. Weigh that reversible settings change against the cost and compatibility work of replacing hardware.
What recent multithreaded physics work changes
In a May 2026 development update, iRacing described ongoing multithreaded physics work and reported that a recent change reduced CPU usage by half or more across a wide range of hardware in full-field use. That is a reported outcome for the described change and scenario, not a universal benchmark or a guarantee for every configuration. Read the May 2026 development update.
