The client exports a portable .osr replay file to the Replays folder inside the osu! installation directory. To share it, send that file along with access to the exact beatmap used in the play; without that beatmap, the replay cannot be played.
Save a completed solo replay
- Open the score from the local scoreboard to bring up its results screen.
- Press F2. osu! exports the replay as an
.osrfile in theReplaysfolder within the osu! installation directory. In the online results view, you can also use the “Save replay to Replays folder” control. See osu!’s replay guide.
osu! also automatically stores completed-play replay data in the hidden Data/r directory. That internal data is not a substitute for exporting a shareable file: if replay data was not saved for a score, pressing F2 later will not restore it. Use the in-game export rather than trying to rename or manage encrypted files in hidden data folders.
Save a failed solo play
At the game-over or death screen, press F2 to save the failed play. This applies to Solo when the game-over screen appears. The osu! FAQ dates the failed-replay save feature to 24 August 2020. Read the osu! FAQ.
Share the replay so someone else can watch it
- Send the exported
.osrfile to the recipient. - Make sure the exact beatmap associated with the replay is installed or otherwise available to their osu! client.
- The recipient can then open the replay in osu!.
The osu! file-format documentation says an .osr file can be played only when the game has the exact beatmap for which it was recorded. The replay file alone may not be enough. See the .osr file-format documentation.

Replay options by situation
| Situation | How to save or access it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Passed solo play | Open the score’s results screen and press F2, or use the save control in online results. | F2 cannot recover replay data that was never saved. |
| Failed solo play | Press F2 at the game-over/death screen. | Available when the Solo game-over screen is present. |
| Head-to-Head or Team VS multiplayer | Press F2 to export the replay. | Multiplayer exports are not kept internally and are not added to the local leaderboard. |
| Tag co-op or Tag-team VS | Not supported by the documented F2 export workflow. | Use another available way to watch the match; the replay guide does not document an F2 export for these modes. |
| Spectating | A spectator replay can be exported. | It contains only the portion watched, and a failed spectator replay cannot be exported. It is not a way to save your own complete play. |
| Server replay | Signed-in players connected to Bancho can download eligible replays in-client. | Server replays are retained for the top 1,000 plays on a beatmap difficulty, so this is not a replacement for keeping your own exported file. |
Details for the multiplayer, spectator, and server-replay cases are in the osu! replay guide and multiplayer documentation.

An exported .osr file is the practical choice when you want to keep or send a particular replay. A server replay is fetched through osu! and is available only for eligible leaderboard plays. Both still depend on the exact beatmap being available to the game.
