Yes—but only at the right used price and for the right job. An Xbox One remains useful for backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, supported Game Pass titles, streaming apps and physical media. It is no longer a safe choice as a primary console for new AAA releases, fast loading or long-term platform support. In 2026, buy one only when the complete bundle is substantially cheaper than an Xbox Series S and you specifically want a disc drive, a legacy library or an inexpensive media and Game Pass machine.

What can an Xbox One still do in 2026?

Xbox One continues to run supported games, online services and entertainment applications. Its value depends less on raw capability than on whether your library and habits fit an older generation.

  • Backward compatibility: Microsoft provides free compatibility for select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Digital purchases appear in the console’s Ready to Install list. A compatible disc installs to the hard drive but must remain in the drive whenever you play.
  • Game Pass: Supported Game Pass games still run natively, and cloud gaming can extend access to titles that are too demanding for the hardware. Streaming quality depends on your network and on the availability of cloud gaming in your subscription and region.
  • Entertainment: BGR reports that Netflix, Crunchyroll, Spotify, YouTube and Twitch apps run on Xbox One. USB storage can also hold personal media.
  • Physical media: Standard Xbox One, One S and One X models play physical Xbox games and DVDs/Blu-rays. Disc playback can be affected by regional restrictions, and BGR cautions that some Blu-ray playback may show lag or distorted audio or video.

Microsoft Support says new movie and TV purchases have stopped in Microsoft stores; content you already bought remains playable in the Movies & TV app. Free-to-play games do not require a paid console-multiplayer subscription, while requirements for paid multiplayer and Game Pass tiers can change.

Can Xbox One play new Xbox games?

Sometimes, but you must check every game individually. New releases increasingly target Xbox Series X|S, and technically demanding games may not install or launch on Xbox One. Microsoft’s first-party releases are increasingly Series-only, according to Swappa’s 2026 guide and BGR’s 2026 coverage.

  • Powerful hardware provides stunning, true-to-life graphics

Do not assume that an Xbox-branded game supports Xbox One. Look at the game’s store listing or the publisher’s system requirements and confirm that “Xbox One” is explicitly listed. A title that supports Xbox Series X|S, PC or cloud gaming may still omit Xbox One.

Cloud gaming can be a workaround when a game is available through your plan, but it is not equivalent to local installation: resolution, latency and image quality vary with connection quality, household traffic and Microsoft’s service availability.

How much should you pay for a used Xbox One in 2026?

Price is the deciding factor. BGR reported on October 25, 2026 that regular Xbox One and Xbox One S Digital Edition consoles commonly sold for about $60–$130 on eBay, while GameStop refurbished Xbox One inventory started at $104.99. Swappa’s 2026 guide describes typical used discounts of 30–60% below new retail.

Those figures are market snapshots, not guaranteed prices. Compare the complete bundle, including a working controller, power cable, storage and shipping, with a used Series S before paying. BGR cited approximately $500 for a Series S comparison, but actual retail and used prices vary by seller, region and promotion.

Option Best use Important limitation
Xbox One / One S Backlog, discs, streaming and inexpensive Game Pass access Older CPU/GPU, slower loading and shrinking new-release support
Xbox One S Digital Edition Low-cost digital library No disc drive; cannot use physical games or Blu-rays
Xbox One X Higher resolution for Xbox One-era games Still an older generation without Series features or a longer support horizon
Xbox Series S Current-generation digital gaming at 1080p–1440p targets No disc drive; budget for digital purchases or subscriptions
Xbox Series X 4K targets, demanding games and physical discs Higher purchase cost than older used models

If an Xbox One bundle is close to a Series S in price, the Series S is normally the better purchase for current games. Choose the One only when its discount is substantial or its disc drive and legacy compatibility solve a specific need.

Which Xbox One model makes sense?

Xbox One and Xbox One S

These are the sensible low-cost choices for a backlog, streaming or physical-game collection. The standard disc models add DVD and Blu-ray playback, while the One S Digital Edition removes the drive and should cost less.

Xbox One X

One X can deliver better resolution in Xbox One-era titles, but it does not cross the generation boundary. It still has the older CPU/GPU design, slower loading than Series consoles and no guarantee of support for new releases. Pay extra for one only if your existing games benefit from its enhanced rendering and the price remains well below a Series S.

What are the main performance compromises?

Xbox One is 2013-era hardware. Compared with Series X|S, expect slower loading and fewer modern system features. Series consoles offer Quick Resume and support for many newer frame-rate and enhancement modes; Xbox One does not receive those features universally, and many FPS Boost enhancements are unavailable on the older hardware.

Resolution is also title-dependent. One X improves some Xbox One games, but it cannot make a Series-only game compatible. Treat the generation boundary as a software-support issue, not merely a graphics setting.

Is an Xbox One good for Game Pass and Netflix?

It is adequate for supported Game Pass games and common streaming apps, especially if you already own the console. Netflix and the other entertainment apps reported by BGR make a disc-model Xbox One a workable living-room media device.

For a new buyer, calculate the subscription and hardware together. BGR cited Game Pass pricing from $9.99 to $22.99 per month; tiers, benefits and regional prices can change. A low console price can lose its advantage if you need a higher tier for the games or multiplayer features you want.

Does the disc drive still matter?

Yes, if you buy used games, own DVDs or Blu-rays, or want to preserve an existing disc library. A digital-only One S cannot perform any of those jobs. Verify that a disc model actually reads a game before purchase, because an inexpensive console with a failed drive is poor value.

Xbox is also testing a disc-preservation feature for Insiders. In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox VP Next Generation Jason Ronald wrote, “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” Testing began for Insiders on August 31, with thousands of titles planned and more to be added. Supported discs can claim a digital entitlement, with Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming benefits where available. The feature is not universal, so verify support and rollout status for each title.

What should you check before buying a used Xbox One?

  1. Compare the total price: Add the controller, cable, shipping and any external storage, then compare that total with a used Series S.
  2. Confirm ownership status: The seller should factory-reset the console and remove their Microsoft account.
  3. Inspect the bundle: Confirm a controller and power cable are included, and check the controller for stick drift and damaged ports.
  4. Test storage and output: Check the advertised storage capacity, HDMI output, startup behavior and fan noise.
  5. Test the drive: On One S or One X disc models, insert a known-good game and, if relevant, a DVD or Blu-ray. Do not assume the drive works because the console powers on.
  6. Check every must-play game: Verify explicit Xbox One support before buying the console or the game.
  7. Plan for storage: Large digital installs can fill the internal drive quickly; budget for compatible USB storage if your library requires it.

Should you buy an Xbox One or Series S?

Choose the Series S when you want current-generation releases, faster loading and a digital-only setup. It is the stronger value for buyers targeting 1080p–1440p displays and who do not need discs.

Choose an Xbox One when the used price is clearly lower, your priority is Xbox 360/original Xbox compatibility, you already own physical games, or you want an inexpensive streaming and Game Pass device. Choose a Series X instead when 4K targets, demanding games and physical discs all matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Xbox One online services shut down in 2026?

The console still supports online services and supported multiplayer games, but Microsoft can retire individual features or games separately. Check the service status and the specific game’s publisher notices rather than assuming a single console-wide shutdown date.

Can I transfer my Xbox One games and saves to Series S?

Digital purchases are associated with your Microsoft account, so compatible titles can appear on another Xbox after you sign in. Save availability depends on the game’s cloud-save support and your account synchronization; disc games require a digital license or a console with a disc drive.

Is Xbox One backward compatibility the same for every Xbox 360 game?

No. Compatibility is title-specific. A game needs to appear on Microsoft’s supported list, and a compatible disc still requires the original disc in the drive after installation.

Does Xbox One support 4K Blu-ray?

The available data establishes DVD/Blu-ray playback on standard disc models but does not establish a universal 4K Blu-ray capability. Check the exact model’s specifications and test the drive if UHD movie playback is important.
