No purchase is needed: Borderlands 4’s first Bounty Pack, How Rush Saved Mercenary Day, has been free to all players since November 20, 2025. The headline claim that players broadly think it is not worth paying for overstates what the available reporting shows. Some owners of pricier editions objected when the pack became free, while others welcomed an extra future pack offered in response; no representative poll establishes which view is more common.
What is in Bounty Pack 1?
2K describes How Rush Saved Mercenary Day as a holiday mission series in which players team up with Rush against Minister Screw. It also includes new Legendary loot and a Vault Card listing 24 cosmetic items and four gear pieces that can be earned repeatedly to pursue different stat rolls. Those are publisher-listed contents, not independent measures of the pack’s length or quality. 2K’s announcement characterizes Bounty Packs as bite-sized narrative content and an expanded loot chase, with cosmetics and missions intended in part for players leveling through the game.

The November 20 update notes say Vault Card progress comes from daily and weekly challenges, but players can advance at their own pace: there are no time limits or expiring rewards. Borderlands Support’s update notes provide those progression details.
Why did Gearbox make it free?
In its November 20, 2025 announcement, 2K said the team had run out of time to include as much content in the pack as originally planned while continuing work to improve the game. The publisher made the pack free and said later Bounty Packs would be more fully loaded. That explanation accounts for the change in availability; it does not establish how much playtime or value any player gets from this pack.

What did players object to?
A November 21, 2025 GamesRadar report documented two responses to the decision. Some owners of higher-priced editions objected that a pack they had effectively paid for was now available to everyone for free. Others welcomed the additional future pack offered in exchange. The report also noted complaints about game performance in replies to the announcement, a separate issue from Bounty Pack 1’s contents.
These are examples of community reaction, not a survey. They support saying that some premium-edition owners were unhappy and that some players approved of the compensation; they do not support saying that players generally, or overwhelmingly, judged the pack poor value.

Do you need to buy Bounty Pack 1?
No. The pack is free for all Borderlands 4 players, and the base game is required. It is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, according to 2K.
The Deluxe Edition, Super Deluxe Edition, and Bounty Pack Bundle include Bounty Packs 2, 3, 4, and 5—not a requirement to buy the now-free first pack. 2K says those later packs are paid content available separately; owners of the bundle receive the newly added fifth pack at no extra cost. Check the edition entitlements for your platform if you are evaluating a bundle, rather than treating Bounty Pack 1 as a current paid add-on.

How to judge the pack’s value for your playstyle
- Interested in a seasonal mission and loot chase? The free pack offers a holiday story, Legendary loot, cosmetics, and repeatable gear rolls, as described by the publisher.
- Looking for a large expansion or a known playtime commitment? The available official description calls the content bite-sized, but does not give a completion-time figure. There is no verified independent assessment here that quantifies its length or quality.
- Comparing what premium-edition owners received? The relevant trade-off is that some owners felt they had paid for content later made free, while the publisher added a fifth pack to certain entitlements. The reported reactions are not quantified, so they cannot settle whether the compensation felt fair to most buyers.
