The conclusion that Deathwish is the canonical ending is an interpretation of reported story details, not a direct Rockstar statement.
Did Rockstar officially confirm GTA 5’s canon ending?
No direct confirmation appears in the official Rockstar announcement for GTA Online: A Safehouse in the Hills. Rockstar announced the update for December 10, 2025, but the announcement does not name any GTA 5 ending as canon.

The claim that Deathwish is canon comes from a Times of Bangladesh report published December 10, 2025. It interprets reported events in the update as evidence for that ending. The distinction matters: story continuity may support an ending without Rockstar explicitly declaring it the official one.

According to the Times of Bangladesh report, A Safehouse in the Hills brings Michael De Santa into GTA Online’s present timeline, and dialogue indicates Trevor Philips is alive. The report also says Michael is pursuing film production and remains with Amanda. These plot details are attributed to the report; Rockstar’s announcement confirms the update and its arrival date, not those details or their implications for canon.

- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
If both Michael and Trevor are alive after GTA 5’s story, that continuity is consistent with the Deathwish finale. It does not, by itself, prove that Rockstar has ruled out every other interpretation or officially designated one ending as canon.
How the three GTA 5 endings compare
The report describes Franklin’s finale choice as a decision among killing Trevor, killing Michael, or selecting Deathwish. Their implications for protagonist survival differ:
Rank #2
- Easy to use
- Excellent quality products
- Good product for use
| Finale choice | What happens to the protagonists | Fit with the reported later continuity |
|---|---|---|
| Kill Trevor | Trevor does not survive; Michael and Franklin do. | Does not fit the report’s indication that Trevor is alive. |
| Kill Michael | Michael does not survive; Trevor and Franklin do. | Does not fit the report’s account of Michael appearing in the later timeline. |
| Deathwish | Franklin, Michael, and Trevor survive. | Fits the report’s account that both Michael and Trevor are alive. |
This comparison explains why the report favors Deathwish. It is an inference from the reported continuity, not an official canon ruling stated in Rockstar’s announcement.
Does Michael’s return affect GTA 6?
The update’s reported use of Michael places him in GTA Online’s later timeline. The sources cited here do not establish that this has any direct effect on GTA 6’s story, so his appearance should not be treated as confirmation of a GTA 6 plot connection.
