Yes—Final Fantasy XV is still worth buying in 2026 if you want an open-world action RPG built around a party road trip, but edition and price matter. Buy FINAL FANTASY XV Royal Edition on PS4 or Xbox, or FINAL FANTASY XV Windows Edition on PC. Those packages contain the substantial Royal upgrades and the principal season-pass episodes. Aim for a deep sale around $13.99–$15; at the observed $34.99 list price, check whether the bundle includes everything you want, especially Episode Ardyn.
The short answer: which version should you buy?
The practical recommendation is straightforward:
| Platform | Edition to look for | What it covers | Important exception |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 | FINAL FANTASY XV Royal Edition | Base game, Royal feature upgrades and the listed season-pass episodes | Check the store listing for Episode Ardyn; it is commonly sold separately |
| Xbox | FINAL FANTASY XV Royal Edition | Base game, Royal feature upgrades and the listed season-pass episodes | Console online multiplayer for Comrades requires a separately sold Game Pass subscription |
| PC | FINAL FANTASY XV Windows Edition | Base game, Season Pass content, Royal Pack content and additional Windows Edition features | Check whether the exact bundle includes Episode Ardyn |
| PS5 | Royal Edition playable through backward compatibility | The PS4 Royal Edition can be played on PS5 | Sony warns that some PS4 features may be absent and a system update may be required |
Microsoft’s Xbox listing describes Royal Edition as bringing “the acclaimed epic to new heights, packed with add-on content and new features.” That is a useful description of the buying decision: the expanded editions are the sensible baseline, while the original release is difficult to justify unless it is dramatically cheaper and you deliberately want only the base game.

Why the expanded editions matter
Final Fantasy XV is an open-world action RPG whose structure centers on a party and a road-trip journey. The post-launch packages are not merely cosmetic bundles. They add playable episodes, additional areas or activities, new equipment, alternate ways to experience combat and story-related content that changes how complete the package feels.
Recommended Free Tools
Buying the right edition avoids assembling the game piecemeal. The Royal and Windows packages gather the major upgrades that first-party storefronts identify as part of the expanded release. You still need to check the product name and included add-ons at checkout, because Episode Ardyn is a notable boundary rather than an automatic assumption.
#1 Best Overall
- An all-new dungeon insomnia city ruins: Expanded map
- New features such as first person mode, new gear, and new bosses
- All season pass content: Episode Gladiolus, Episode Prompto, Multiplayer Expansion: Comrades, and Episode Ignis and over a dozen pieces of DLC, including weapons, Regalia car skins, and item sets
- Armiger unleashed: After you collect all 13 royal arms, a more action oriented mode of the Armiger is unlocked
- Royal vessel: The boat from FFXV is now a controllable vehicle; The same body of water (between Cape Caem and Altissia) can now be freely explored
What Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition includes on PS4 and Xbox
Royal feature upgrades
The Royal Edition listing identifies a dungeon leading to the finale, a first-person mode, new gear and bosses, and more than a dozen bonus weapons, Regalia skins and item sets. These additions are the core reason to choose Royal Edition over the original console release.
- Additional endgame dungeon: a dungeon connected to the finale.
- First-person mode: an alternate perspective for playing portions of the game.
- New gear and bosses: extra equipment and encounters beyond the original package.
- Bonus items: more than a dozen weapons, Regalia skins and item sets.
Season-pass episodes
Royal Edition’s listed add-on content includes Episodes Gladiolus, Prompto, Ignis and Comrades. These are separate character-focused or multiplayer components associated with the season-pass lineup, so the expanded console package is substantially more complete than the launch version.
The Xbox store also identifies the Royal Pack as a separately purchasable add-on. That does not make the standard Royal Edition irrelevant; it means you should read the exact package description rather than assume every similarly named listing contains identical content. If a store page offers the base game, Royal Edition and Royal Pack as separate products, select the product whose included-content list explicitly matches your needs.

What Windows Edition includes on PC
Windows Edition is the PC counterpart to the expanded release. Square Enix describes it as the main game with the Season Pass, bonus items and Royal Pack. The Xbox listing for the Windows Edition specifies the additional features and downloadable content included in that package.
Windows Edition additions
- Expanded Insomnia City Ruins map.
- First-person mode.
- Armiger Unleashed.
- Royal Cruiser.
- Regalia Type-D quest.
- Episodes Gladiolus, Prompto, Ignis and Comrades.
- Booster Pack+ and Holiday Pack+.
For a PC buyer, Windows Edition is therefore the natural starting point. Buying the base game and then trying to reproduce this feature set with individual add-ons can be confusing, and the final cost depends on whatever prices your region shows at that moment.
Rank #2
- Expanded Map: Insomnia City Ruins - all-new side quests and enemies such as Cerberus and Omega will be available through the expanded map of the Crown City of Insomnia
- A fully-controllable Royal Vessel boat, expanding the world of Eos and allowing players to explore the area between Cape Caem and Altissia
- A new accessory that can activate the new action "Armiger Unleashed" - players will be able to unleash powerful attacks while the Armiger is summoned
- A new first-person camera mode, allowing players to experience the game from Noctis' perspective
- More than a dozen pieces of downloadable content including weapons, Regalia car skins and item sets
PC bundle naming still matters
Do not treat every listing that says “complete” or “edition” as interchangeable. Steam lists Windows Edition at its own price and also lists an Episode Ardyn Complete Edition bundle. Before paying, expand the store’s included-items section and confirm whether Episode Ardyn appears by name. If it does not, assume it is not included.
Does Royal Edition include all DLC?
It includes the major Royal upgrades and the principal season-pass episodes, but you should not assume Episode Ardyn is included. The official PlayStation listing presents Episode Ardyn as a separate add-on, and Steam lists both an Episode Ardyn product and an Episode Ardyn Complete Edition bundle separately from Windows Edition.
| Content | Royal Edition / Windows Edition status | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Royal feature upgrades | Included in the expanded editions described by the official listings | Look for Royal Pack or Royal-content wording in the product description |
| Episode Gladiolus | Included in the listed season-pass content | Check the included DLC list |
| Episode Prompto | Included in the listed season-pass content | Check the included DLC list |
| Episode Ignis | Included in the listed season-pass content | Check the included DLC list |
| Comrades | Included in the listed season-pass content | Check the included DLC list and platform online requirements |
| Booster Pack+ and Holiday Pack+ | Listed for Windows Edition | Confirm on the PC store page |
| Episode Ardyn | Not established as included in the standard Royal or Windows Edition listings | Look for Episode Ardyn explicitly, or choose a bundle that names it |
That distinction prevents the most common purchasing mistake: interpreting “Royal” or “Windows” as proof that every separately sold story episode is present. The stores’ own item lists are more reliable than a short headline.
Is Royal Edition playable on PS5?
Yes. The PlayStation compatibility page says Royal Edition is playable on PS5. Sony also warns that some PS4 features may be absent and that a system update may be required. Treat this as compatibility, not a promise that every PS4 behavior or feature is reproduced identically on the newer console.
What to check before installing on PS5
- Open the PlayStation product page for the Royal Edition you intend to buy.
- Read the PS5 compatibility notice, including any warning about missing PS4 features.
- Update the PS5 system software if the store or console requests it.
- Confirm that your purchase is Royal Edition rather than an older base-game listing.
No independent performance benchmark is established here, so a purchase decision should be based on edition contents and compatibility information rather than an assumed frame-rate or resolution improvement.

What is a good sale price?
A price around $13.99 to $15 for Royal Edition or Windows Edition is an easy recommendation because it gives you the expanded package without paying much for an older release. At $34.99, the purchase is more conditional: verify the included DLC, decide whether you also want Episode Ardyn, and compare the exact bundle shown in your region.
Do not read the $13.99 figures as a guaranteed current deal. They were temporary offers observed on the PlayStation and Microsoft listings. Your storefront may show a different currency, tax treatment, discount or bundle.
Which edition should you buy?
Choose Royal Edition on PS4
Choose the PS4 Royal Edition when you want the console version and the store listing includes the Royal upgrades plus the listed season-pass episodes. It is the clearest fit for a PS4 owner who wants the expanded game without assembling add-ons manually.
Choose Royal Edition on Xbox
Choose Xbox Royal Edition for the same content goal. If you plan to play Comrades online, budget for the separately sold Game Pass subscription that Xbox identifies as required for console online multiplayer. The game purchase and the platform’s online-access requirement are separate decisions.
Choose Windows Edition on PC
Choose Windows Edition when playing on PC. Its listed package combines the main game, Season Pass content, Royal Pack content, bonus items and the PC-specific additions such as the expanded Insomnia City Ruins map, Armiger Unleashed, Royal Cruiser and Regalia Type-D quest.
Choose a bundle that names Episode Ardyn
If Episode Ardyn is important to you, select a product or bundle that names it explicitly. The existence of Royal Edition or Windows Edition alone is not enough evidence that Ardyn is present.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Final Fantasy XV worth buying for different kinds of players?
Players who want a party-centered road trip
The game’s defining structure is a journey with a party rather than a solitary campaign. If that setup appeals to you, the expanded editions provide the broadest version of the experience and its additional character episodes.
Players who want an open-world action RPG
Final Fantasy XV remains a sensible buy if your priority is an open-world action RPG rather than a narrowly linear adventure. The Royal additions add encounters, equipment and an endgame dungeon, while Windows Edition adds further exploration and feature content.
Players focused on every post-launch story release
Buy only after checking the DLC list. Royal Edition and Windows Edition cover the principal season-pass episodes, but Episode Ardyn is commonly listed separately. A higher-priced bundle that explicitly includes Ardyn may be better value than a cheaper edition followed by individual purchases.
Best Value
- Access to all expansion content from Heavensward and Stormblood, unlocking additional jobs, areas, story quests and more ways to explore: flying, swimming and diving
- A flexible class system that allows players to switch freely between a variety of classes and jobs, including new additions red mage and samurai, and reach the new level cap of level 70
- All the hallmarks of the FINAL FANTASY franchise, including an engaging storyline, genre-leading graphics, and HD real time cut scenes.
- Robust gameplay features such as player-managed Free Companies, diverse party finder features to group up with other players with ease, and a variety of fun activities in the Gold Saucer area, all designed to accommodate a dynamic player community.
- Challenging trials, dungeons and raids for groups of up to 24, and exciting player-vs-player (PvP) content for groups of up to 72 players
Players who only want the lowest possible entry price
Wait for a sale rather than paying the full observed list price. The difference between $34.99 and the temporary $13.99 offers is large enough to change the recommendation, especially if you still need to decide whether to add Episode Ardyn.
How to verify a store listing before checkout
- Confirm the platform label. Select Royal Edition for PS4/Xbox or Windows Edition for PC.
- Open the included-content panel. Do not rely only on the product title or cover image.
- Look for the Royal features. The listing should mention the Royal Pack or its feature set, such as first-person mode and the additional dungeon.
- Check the episode names. Gladiolus, Prompto, Ignis and Comrades should appear when the season-pass content is included.
- Search the same page for Episode Ardyn. If it is absent, treat it as a separate purchase.
- Read platform requirements. Xbox console online multiplayer requires a separately sold Game Pass subscription.
- Check the displayed currency and promotion dates. A sale observed in another region or at another time is not a guaranteed price for you.
- On PS5, read the compatibility notice. Sony notes that some PS4 features may be absent and an update may be required.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the original base game because it is cheaper
A low price is not automatically better value if it omits the Royal upgrades and season-pass episodes. Compare the complete-content list and wait for a sale on the expanded edition instead.
Assuming “Royal” means every DLC episode
Episode Ardyn is the important exception. Confirm its presence by name or plan to purchase the appropriate Ardyn bundle separately.
Confusing Royal Pack with Royal Edition
The Xbox listing identifies Royal Pack as a separately purchasable add-on. Read whether the item in your cart is the full Royal Edition or only an add-on intended for an existing copy of the game.
Using an old price as a current budget
The $13.99 offers were temporary observations from 2026 storefront pages. Prices fluctuate, and the ¥8,580 figure is a 2018 Japanese suggested retail price. Check your own store immediately before purchase.
Forgetting the online-access requirement
Comrades content may be included in the game package, but Xbox states that console online multiplayer requires a separately sold Game Pass subscription. Content ownership and online-service access are not the same thing.
Final buying rule
Buy Royal Edition on PS4, Xbox or PS5, and Windows Edition on PC. Prefer a sale around $13.99–$15, inspect the included-content list, and treat Episode Ardyn as separate unless the exact product explicitly includes it. At $34.99, buy only after confirming that the bundle matches the amount of DLC you want.
