Gaming disorder is recognized in the World Health Organization’s ICD-11, but it is not a Fortnite-specific diagnosis. The classification concerns a persistent pattern of gaming that impairs control, displaces other important activities and continues despite harm—not simply playing Fortnite often or for long sessions.
What the WHO recognizes
The World Health Organization (WHO) includes gaming disorder in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). It covers digital or video gaming, whether online or offline; it does not name Fortnite as a separate disorder. The WHO says the classification followed reviews of available evidence and expert consensus across disciplines and regions. WHO’s gaming-disorder FAQ and its 2018 ICD-11 update describe the category.
That distinction matters: “Fortnite addiction” is familiar everyday language, but a clinician would assess the person’s broader pattern of gaming and its effects, not diagnose a disorder based on the game’s title or a player’s enthusiasm.
What the diagnostic pattern involves
WHO describes gaming disorder through three features:

- Impaired control: difficulty controlling when, how often, how long or in what circumstances gaming happens.
- Gaming takes priority: play increasingly comes before other interests and daily activities.
- Play continues despite harm: gaming carries on or escalates even after negative consequences occur.
These features must be serious enough to cause significant impairment in important areas of life, such as personal or family life, social relationships, education or work. The pattern would normally have been evident for at least 12 months. WHO notes that a shorter period may be considered when symptoms are severe and all diagnostic requirements are met; the usual duration is not a simple waiting period or a substitute for clinical judgment. How to tell when gaming may be a concern
Hours alone do not establish gaming disorder. WHO’s definition does not set a daily hour limit. The more useful questions are whether the player can control gaming, whether it is repeatedly crowding out responsibilities or relationships, and whether play continues despite meaningful negative effects.

WHO advises paying attention to gaming that excludes other daily activities and to changes in physical or psychological health and social functioning. A difficult week, a long session or strong interest in Fortnite is not, by itself, evidence of a disorder. A persistent pattern of impaired control and significant disruption may warrant assessment by a qualified health professional; an article or checklist cannot diagnose an individual.
What prevalence figures do—and don’t—say
WHO says gaming disorder affects only a small proportion of people who play digital or video games, and describes gaming as a healthy hobby for most users. Its addictive-behaviour overview reports estimates of 1.3%–9.9% for “problem gaming,” a proxy measure rather than a count of diagnosed cases. WHO cautions that estimates vary considerably across countries and jurisdictions, partly because assessment instruments are not standardized.

That range is not a Fortnite statistic, a diagnosed-disorder rate or an estimate that can be applied to Fortnite players. The WHO sources cited here provide no Fortnite-specific prevalence figure.
How WHO’s ICD-11 category differs from DSM-5
These classifications should not be treated as interchangeable. WHO says the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 listed Internet Gaming Disorder in 2013 as a condition requiring further study. By contrast, gaming disorder is an included category in WHO’s ICD-11. WHO summarizes this distinction in its ICD-11 update and addictive-behaviour overview; that comparison does not make the constructs identical.

Why the distinction is important
WHO emphasizes that assessment should distinguish regular, healthy gaming from hazardous gaming and gaming disorder. Its 2020 discussion of assessment instruments describes the need for tools that make those distinctions. For families, the practical focus is the effect on daily functioning and health—not treating every frequent player as ill. If persistent gaming-related problems are disrupting important parts of life, a qualified professional can help assess what is happening.
