Sony’s fifth-anniversary review named it among the three leading PS5 multiplayer games by total playtime through September 2025. A US player-engagement ranking reported for 2025 placed it first, and a PS-Timetracker sample ranked it first in August 2026. Those are distinct rankings, not one definitive all-time or live PS5 leaderboard.
What does “most played” mean?
A game can lead by accumulated hours, by the share of players who tried it during a period, or by downloads. Those measures answer different questions: long-term playtime reflects sustained use, an engagement panel tracks participation, and a download chart counts downloads rather than how long people play.
Rankings also depend on when and where data were collected, whether the chart covers PS5 alone or a broader PlayStation population, and whether it counts individual games or franchises. The available figures should therefore be read as separate snapshots, not combined into a single ranking.
What are the most-played PS5 games according to Sony?
In its fifth-anniversary retrospective, Sony Interactive Entertainment said internal data updated through September 2025 placed Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare among the three most-played PS5 multiplayer titles by total playtime. Sony did not give an order within that trio in the cited statement.

Sony separately named Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, God of War Ragnarök, and Hogwarts Legacy as its three leading single-player PS5 games by total playtime, also without specifying an order. These are Sony’s internal groupings, not a complete ranked list of every PS5 release. The statement appears in Italian; this is a translation of Sony’s wording, not an English-original quotation.
The same retrospective reported more than 7,500 PS5 games released, more than 80 million consoles sold worldwide, 100 billion hours of play, and 40 billion trophies earned—including 110 million platinum trophies—by the fifth anniversary. Sony identified the data as internal and updated through September 2025. Those platform totals give scale, but they do not change the scope of the game rankings.

How does Fortnite rank in other player-engagement data?
Windows Central reported the Circana Player Engagement Tracker’s 2025 US PlayStation ranking by the percentage of its active panel that played each title. Its order was:
- Fortnite
- Call of Duty
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Roblox
- Minecraft
This is a US engagement ranking, not Sony’s global PS5 playtime list. Call of Duty is counted as a series or banner rather than one individual release, and Fortnite includes all its modes, not just Battle Royale.
What are the most-played PS5 games right now?
There is no single current, authoritative public PS5 leaderboard in these figures. PS-Timetracker offers dated views of its own tracked users, which can show a trend but should not be treated as a census of PlayStation players.

In PS-Timetracker’s August 2026 PS5 table, Fortnite ranked first with 66,536 tracked hours, 4,641 tracked players, and 57,167 sessions. These are service sample totals, not estimates for the entire PS5 population. PS-Timetracker says its users are not representative of all PlayStation Network users.
October 8, 2026: rolling seven-day PlayStation Network sample
In the service’s rolling seven-day PlayStation Network table generated October 8, 2026, Roblox ranked first and Fortnite second. This table has a different period and broader PlayStation Network scope than the August PS5 monthly table. The change illustrates why a ranking needs its date and scope attached.

Do download charts show which PS5 games are most played?
No. Sony’s 2025 PlayStation Store charts rank downloads, not hours played or active players. In the annual PS5 paid-game chart, NBA 2K26 led in the US and Canada, while EA SPORTS FC 26 led in Europe. In Sony’s separate free-to-play chart, Fortnite topped both regions. Sony notes that upgrades are excluded from these download charts.
The regional difference matters for anyone asking which newer releases are popular: the paid download leader was not the same across those markets, and Fortnite’s free-to-play result belongs to a separate category. Neither chart establishes which game held players’ attention longest.

How to read a PS5 games ranking
- Check the metric: total playtime, panel participation, and downloads are not interchangeable.
- Check the date window: an annual or five-year result can differ from a monthly or rolling-week snapshot.
- Check the platform and region: a US PlayStation panel or a broad PSN sample is not automatically a global PS5 ranking.
- Check what counts as a title: a franchise grouping can appear alongside individual releases.
- Check the sample: a tracker’s opted-in users may not represent the full player population.
