Mark Cerny says an equivalent frame-generation library should arrive on PlayStation platforms “at some point,” but Sony has not named a console or announced a release date. That leaves both PS5 Pro support and any particular next-generation PlayStation release unconfirmed.
What Mark Cerny said about PlayStation frame generation
In a March 2026 interview with Digital Foundry, PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny discussed Sony’s work with AMD and said: “I’m very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.” GameSpot and TechRadar reported the remarks (GameSpot; TechRadar).
The wording is a broad statement of future direction, not a product announcement. Cerny did not identify a PlayStation model or generation, describe a launch window, or provide technical specifications or performance results. In response to a question about the target platform and upcoming releases, he added: “All I can say is that we have no more releases planned for this year. And that I look forward to discussing this more in the future!” The interview coverage dates the comment to March 2026, so “this year” refers to 2026; it does not establish a release year after 2026.
Is frame generation coming to PS5 or PS5 Pro?
Cerny’s statement says “PlayStation platforms,” but does not confirm that the feature is coming to PS5, PS5 Pro, or a specific future console. TechRadar’s report likewise clarifies that no platform was named. A PS5 Pro compatibility claim—or a claim that a particular next-generation console will be first—would go beyond what the interview establishes.

Tom’s Hardware also reported on the comments, but any console timing discussed as speculation should not be read as confirmation from Cerny (Tom’s Hardware).
Frame generation is different from PSSR upscaling
Frame generation creates additional frames between conventionally rendered game frames. Upscaling instead reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution input. They are separate techniques, even though both can contribute to how a game looks or runs.

Sony’s current PlayStation upscaling technology is PSSR. In its December 18, 2024 PS5 Pro technical seminar, Sony described PSSR as AI-driven upscaling and announced a deeper machine-learning collaboration with AMD focused on graphics and gameplay (PlayStation.Blog). Sony’s 2026 corporate strategy presentation says updated PSSR 2.0 is available on PS5 Pro and uses machine learning to enhance image clarity, delivering 4K visuals at high frame rates (Sony Group Corporation).
Cerny separately clarified that “the new PSSR uses the same core co-developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s Upscaling.” That statement concerns upscaling; it is not confirmation that PSSR 2.0 includes the future PlayStation frame-generation library.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
What remains unknown
- Supported hardware: No specific console model or PlayStation generation has been announced for frame generation.
- Release timing: Cerny gave no date. His comment that there were no more releases planned for 2026 does not say when the library will arrive.
- Implementation: Sony has not disclosed how the library will work on PlayStation, which games may use it, or what performance and image-quality effects to expect.
The reported remarks provide no measured frame-rate uplift, latency figure, supported-game count, or PlayStation implementation specification. Frame generation should not be assumed to improve responsiveness or image quality in every game.
