Short answer: Do not treat PS5 Pro’s PSSR as a universal frame-generation feature. Sony documents PSSR as AI image reconstruction and upscaling, while competitive players should first choose the game’s most stable performance or high-frame-rate mode. Use PSSR when it improves clarity without making motion or controls feel less consistent.
Sony has not published a universal PS5 Pro frame-generation switch or a latency benchmark for PSSR. Any title that offers a separate frame-generation-like setting must therefore be judged on its own frame-rate mode, display, implementation and responsiveness.

Does PS5 Pro have frame generation?
Sony’s official PS5 Pro material describes PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) as AI-enhanced resolution. It analyzes pixels from a game image and reconstructs a sharper output, allowing a compatible title to present cleaner detail from a lower internal rendering resolution. That is an upscaling or image-reconstruction process, not proof that the console is generating additional displayed frames.
The distinction matters in competitive games. Frame generation normally refers to creating intermediate frames between traditionally rendered frames. Those inserted frames can make motion appear smoother, but they do not automatically provide the same control response as a genuinely higher rendered frame rate. PSSR’s documented purpose is image quality and stability. Sony’s updated-PSSR announcement says the technology is designed to maintain high frame rates and image quality, but it does not present PSSR as a general frame-generation toggle.

Sony’s compatibility announcements describe benefits such as greater image stability, clearer fine details, more stable motion reconstruction and more consistent performance in supported games. Those are title-specific outcomes. They do not establish that every PS5 Pro game receives generated frames, nor that every PSSR implementation has the same latency behavior.
An official 007 First Light developer case study describes improved PSSR reconstructing a sharper, more stable image from a lower internal resolution and enabling it by default in the PS5 Pro version. That example reinforces the practical distinction: the internal rendering workload can be reduced while the output image is reconstructed, but the source does not claim a universal frame-generation mode.
What competitive players should prioritize
Competitive play rewards predictable timing more than a visually impressive but inconsistent presentation. Start by identifying the game mode that delivers the steadiest native or conventionally rendered frame rate. A stable 60fps mode can be preferable to a mode that sometimes reaches a higher peak but fluctuates during fights, effects or crowded scenes.
Use the game’s performance or HFR mode first
If the title offers Performance, High Frame Rate (HFR), or a similarly named option, test that mode before changing image-quality settings. Read the game’s description carefully: “quality” may raise resolution or effects, while “performance” may lower internal resolution to sustain faster rendering. PSSR can then improve the appearance of that lower internal resolution where the game supports it.
Separate image quality from frame delivery
Judge two different questions independently:
- Are controls and camera movement delivered at a consistent cadence?
- Does the reconstructed image make targets, edges and fine detail easier to read?
PSSR can help with the second question without increasing the number of frames the game actually renders. If a sharper image comes with visible reconstruction errors, unstable detail or a less consistent feel, the competitive advantage is not automatic.

Do not assume a universal latency result
The official sources reviewed do not publish input-lag measurements for PS5 Pro with PSSR or for a general frame-generation setting. Responsiveness can vary with the title’s engine and frame-rate mode, the display and its processing, and the way a developer implemented the feature. A claim that PSSR always adds lag, or never adds lag, goes beyond the available evidence.
| Setting or feature | What it is documented to do | Competitive-play question |
|---|---|---|
| PSSR | AI image reconstruction/upscaling from a lower internal resolution | Does the clearer image improve target visibility without introducing distracting reconstruction behavior? |
| Performance mode | Typically prioritizes a steadier frame rate over maximum visual settings; exact behavior is set by the developer | Is frame delivery more consistent during real matches? |
| HFR mode | A developer-provided high-frame-rate option, where available | Can your display show the supported output, and does the game sustain it? |
| Title-specific frame-generation-like option | Any separate option exposed by an individual game; behavior is not standardized by the PS5 Pro documentation | Does this particular implementation improve motion without harming control response? |
Should you use PSSR in performance mode?
Usually, it is the first combination worth trying when the game supports it: select the most stable performance mode, then enable PSSR if the title provides that choice. The expected benefit is a cleaner, steadier-looking image than the mode’s lower internal resolution would produce by itself.

Sony’s updated PSSR descriptions specifically emphasize image stability, fine-detail clarity and more stable motion reconstruction in compatible titles. Those improvements can make an opponent easier to distinguish against a busy background.
However, inspect motion rather than judging a still screenshot. Follow a fast-moving character, pan across thin geometry and watch effects-heavy scenes. If detail swims, breaks apart or changes character during movement, compare the same sequence with PSSR disabled. The right choice is the setting that preserves readable detail while keeping motion and controls predictable in your game.
PSSR should not be described as creating extra displayed frames. If the game’s performance mode renders at a given rate, PSSR reconstructs the image associated with those frames; it does not turn the mode into a guaranteed higher-refresh output.

When a 120Hz display matters
A 120Hz-capable television or monitor matters when a game and the console support a high-frame-rate output. Sony’s Stellar Blade example states that its HFR option can reach 80fps and requires 120Hz display support. The same example describes a 4K presentation at 50fps or more with PSSR upscaling, then separately identifies the 80fps HFR option.
Recommended Free Tools
This is an output requirement, not frame generation. A 120Hz screen allows the console’s supported high-frame-rate signal to be displayed; it does not create frames that the console or game did not render. On a 60Hz screen, an 80fps-capable mode cannot be shown at its full refresh opportunity, so the practical benefit of selecting that mode is limited.
| Your setup | What to verify | Likely decision |
|---|---|---|
| 60Hz display | Whether the game’s 60fps performance mode is stable and whether PSSR improves clarity | Favor the most consistent 60fps presentation; HFR output is not the main benefit of this display. |
| 120Hz display | Whether the title offers an HFR mode and states a supported output such as 80fps | Test HFR first for competitive play, then compare PSSR image quality in that mode if available. |
| Display with substantial processing | Whether its gaming or low-latency picture setting is enabled | Use the display’s gaming-oriented configuration before comparing console modes. |
How to choose the best mode in a specific game
- Check the game’s own graphics menu. Record every available option, including Performance, Quality, HFR, PSSR, resolution and any setting that explicitly mentions frame generation or interpolation.
- Start with the most stable performance-oriented mode. Play an actual match or a demanding section rather than relying on the menu description. Observe camera pans, combat effects and busy scenes where frame delivery is most likely to fluctuate.
- Enable PSSR, if offered, without changing the frame-rate mode. Compare the same route, replay or training sequence so that image clarity and motion are the variables being tested.
- Check for reconstruction artifacts. Inspect thin lines, foliage, particles, distant players, subtitles and rapid camera movement. Note whether fine detail remains stable or visibly changes as objects move.
- Test HFR only if your display supports the required refresh rate. Sony’s cited Stellar Blade example requires 120Hz support for its 80fps HFR option. Other games may specify different limits, so use the title’s own requirement.
- Compare control confidence, not just smoothness. Use the same controller sensitivity and display settings. Ask whether aiming, turning and confirming an action feel consistent, especially during rapid corrections.
- Keep the setting that wins in real play. If HFR is steadier and readable, keep it. If PSSR improves visibility without a noticeable trade-off, leave it enabled. If a title-specific frame-generation-like option feels less direct, disable it for competitive sessions even if motion appears smoother.
How to evaluate a title-specific frame-generation-like option
A game may expose a setting whose name includes frame generation, interpolation or generated frames. Treat that as a separate feature from PSSR. The existence of such a menu item does not prove that all PS5 Pro games have the feature, and the behavior may differ between modes.
Check the rendered base rate
Ask what frame rate the game is rendering before any additional frames are presented. A mode with a stable higher base rate is generally the safer starting point for competitive play than one that relies on inserted frames to appear smoother.
Watch for timing and artifact problems
Look at fast camera turns, overlapping players, particles and transparent effects. Generated-frame algorithms can struggle when objects move rapidly or when the scene changes abruptly. The relevant question is not whether a menu promises more frames, but whether the resulting presentation remains clear and responsive in the situations that decide matches.

Do not generalize from one game
Sony’s published material describes PS5 Pro benefits on a compatible-title basis. A setting that feels acceptable in one game cannot establish the latency or image behavior of another game using a different engine, frame-rate target or implementation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Display and cable setup for PS5 Pro competitive play
For players specifically targeting high-frame-rate output, the most important hardware requirement in the cited evidence is a 120Hz-capable television or gaming monitor. Confirm that the display supports the console’s intended signal and that its gaming or low-latency picture mode is selected.
An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable can be a sensible conditional accessory when your existing cable or display does not support the required signal, but the available Sony material does not establish that every PS5 Pro owner needs a replacement cable. Verify the cable, display input and console settings as a system rather than buying one automatically.
- Use the display input that supports its advertised high-refresh capability.
- Enable the display’s gaming-oriented picture mode before comparing responsiveness.
- Confirm that the console and game are actually outputting the intended high-frame-rate mode.
- Compare the same title and scene after each change so the result is attributable to the setting.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: calling every PSSR benefit frame generation
Sharper detail, reduced shimmer and more stable reconstruction describe image quality. They do not demonstrate that additional frames are being generated. Keep those terms separate when reading a game’s settings or evaluating a review.

Mistake: choosing the highest peak number
A headline frame-rate figure is less useful than consistency during a match. Test demanding scenes and retain the mode that avoids distracting drops or uneven motion.

Mistake: using HFR without the required display
High-frame-rate output depends on the display’s refresh capability. Sony’s 80fps Stellar Blade example explicitly requires 120Hz support, so a 60Hz screen cannot provide the same presentation.
Mistake: assuming one latency answer applies everywhere
No universal latency measurement is provided for PSSR or PS5 Pro frame generation in the official material cited here. Avoid promises in either direction; evaluate the exact title, mode and display you use.
A practical decision matrix
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Then consider… |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum control consistency | The game’s most stable Performance mode | PSSR only if motion remains clean and readable |
| Higher supported output on a 120Hz display | The title’s HFR mode | PSSR in that mode, if offered and visually stable |
| Sharper detail at a lower internal resolution | Performance mode with PSSR | Disable PSSR if reconstruction artifacts distract during movement |
| A game with a separate frame-generation-like switch | Its stable native/performance mode | Test the separate option in live play; do not infer its behavior from PSSR |
What Sony’s evidence supports—and what it does not
Sony’s updated-PSSR announcement refers to more than 50 PS5 Pro titles and presents the technology as machine-learning-based upscaling intended to reconstruct a sharper, more stable image while maintaining high frame rates and image quality. Compatibility announcements add claims about fine-detail clarity, motion reconstruction and performance in supported games.
That evidence supports using PSSR as an image-quality decision inside a title’s graphics modes. It does not support a claim that PS5 Pro has a universal frame-generation feature, that PSSR always inserts frames, or that a specific input-lag penalty or benefit applies to every game.
For competitive play, the defensible recommendation is therefore conditional: choose the most stable performance or HFR mode your game provides, use a 120Hz display when the title’s high-frame-rate output requires it, and keep PSSR when its clarity gains do not compromise the direct, consistent feel you need.
