Marvel Rivals is like Overwatch at the broad genre level: both fit the team-based hero-shooter frame. Rivals puts Marvel heroes and villains, destructible battlefields, and character synergies at the center, so the comparison is a useful starting point—not proof that the games play alike in every detail.
What kind of game is Marvel Rivals?
Marvel and NetEase describe Marvel Rivals as a team-based player-versus-player superhero shooter. Its announcement highlights 6v6 matches, Marvel characters, destructible maps, and abilities that can combine into Team-Up Skills. The multiverse setting gives the battles a Marvel-specific premise, while seasonal drops are intended to add heroes and maps. Marvel Rivals’ official announcement was published March 27, 2024.
That makes “Overwatch with superheroes” a quick genre shorthand, but not a precise description of every mechanic. Marvel Rivals’ own identity is shaped by its licensed roster, the interactions between selected characters, and environments that can be damaged during a match.
How fair is the Overwatch comparison?
The comparison is fair when it means a team-based shooter organized around playable heroes with distinct abilities. It becomes misleading if it implies a verified one-to-one match in team composition, objectives, character roles, map design, or moment-to-moment combat. The available official description establishes Marvel Rivals’ format and features; it does not provide a systematic comparison with Overwatch.

For a meaningful comparison, look at the specific version of each game and check these details rather than assuming they line up:
- Camera perspective and the feel of combat.
- Team size, match formats, and objectives.
- How hero roles and ability kits affect team strategy.
- How much maps can be altered during a match.
- Whether character combinations create special synergies.
- Supported platforms, cross-play, cross-progression, and access policies.
These points can change as either live game is updated. The official Rivals announcement supports its 6v6 format, destructible environments, and Team-Up Skills; it does not establish how those features compare mechanically with Overwatch.
What makes Marvel Rivals distinct?
Marvel heroes and villains
The roster is built from recognizable Marvel characters, giving the game a superhero and multiverse identity rather than an original cast. The roster is live-service content, however, so an announcement or season-era list should not be treated as a current count.

The official announcement also emphasizes destructible maps. That feature gives the environment a more active role in battles, though the announcement alone does not establish the extent of destruction or how it compares with another game’s map interactions.
Can you play Marvel Rivals with friends on another platform?
The official release FAQ lists Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Store, and Loading Bay as supported access platforms. It says players can play together across platforms when they are on the same server. The FAQ is dated December 5, 2024, so check current official support information before relying on that policy.
Does Marvel Rivals have cross-progression?
The same December 5, 2024 FAQ says account data between platforms cannot currently cross-progress. In other words, its launch-era guidance does not describe a way to carry account data between platforms. Because platform policies can change, confirm the latest official FAQ or game announcements before switching platforms.

Publisher troubleshooting guidance
The launch-era FAQ says PC performance issues may persist even when a system meets minimum requirements. Its suggestions include lowering settings such as texture quality; for crashes or graphical errors, it suggests updating drivers or repairing the game client. These are the publisher’s troubleshooting recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular change will fix an issue.
The FAQ also says PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X support a 120 FPS High Frame Rate mode when used with a display that supports HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz. This is launch-era guidance and may not reflect later hardware, software, or support changes.

Season details are time-sensitive
A January 13, 2026 NetEase and Marvel Games announcement about Season 6 described Deadpool’s addition, the Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist role labels, and Team-Up Abilities. That is a dated example, not a current roster or balance guide.
PC Gamer reported on September 9, 2026 that Season 10 was planned around one new hero and that two new heroes had been decided for Season 11. In that report, creative designer Guangyun Chen said, “We want to reassure the community that a single-hero season isn’t the new normal.” Those are statements about plans at the time of reporting, not confirmation of what later shipped. Check the latest official update or patch notes for the current season, roster, modes, and balance.
