Melon Playground is not rated 17 on the current US App Store. The listing, which is titled Melon: Sandbox, shows 16+. The rating shown on the storefront is what matters for a parent deciding whether a child can download it, and the reasons often given online for a 17 rating do not match that listing.
The current US age rating
The US App Store page for Melon: Sandbox lists the developer as Payge Ltd and shows an age rating of 16+. The game is a free simulation app for iPhone and iPad with optional in-app purchases. The store describes it as a mobile ragdoll physics sandbox in which players destroy objects using firearms, melee weapons, explosives, vehicles, and custom devices.
What the storefront says is in the game
The age rating comes with a set of content descriptors. Apple’s current US listing shows the following:
- Frequent: cartoon or fantasy violence; guns or other weapons
- Infrequent: realistic violence; horror and fear themes
- Also listed: unrestricted web access, advertising, and user-generated content
Those descriptors are the most reliable guide to what the listing itself flags. The storefront does not list sexual content, and it is not an explanation for the 16+ rating.

Where the “17” explanation comes from
A secondary article titled “Why is melon playground 17?”, published by SplicedOnline on October 13, 2024, argues that the rating reflects sexual content, gore, and mature themes. That article is evidence that the explanation has circulated online. It is not an account of Apple’s rating decision, and its claims do not match the descriptors on the current US listing. Treat it as a secondary source that repeats an unverified reason.
What cannot be established
Several parts of the question remain open:
- Whether the app previously carried a 17+ rating on the US App Store. No official record of an earlier rating was found.
- Whether a different country’s storefront shows 17 or another age. No verified alternate-region listing was found.
- Why any storefront would assign a particular rating. No official statement from Apple or the developer explaining the rating was found.
Rating labels can change over time and differ between territories, so a 17 seen elsewhere, or in an older screenshot, does not by itself show what the US listing says today.

How to check the rating on your own store
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad and search for “Melon: Sandbox.”
- Open the app’s product page and scroll to the information section.
- Find the age rating and the listed descriptors. Compare them with the US listing described above.
- If your storefront shows a different rating, note the country setting you are using, because the App Store shows the rating for the storefront you are browsing.
What a parent should weigh beyond the number
A single age threshold does not describe every experience inside a sandbox. Three details in the listing are worth considering alongside the rating:
- Web access and user-generated content. These can expose a child to material the developer did not create or review.
- In-app purchases. The game is free to download, so spending controls matter as much as the content rating.
- Fear themes and realistic violence. The listing flags these as infrequent, not constant, but they are part of the content a child may see.
For a younger child, the combination of weapons, destruction, and open web and user content is the practical reason to look closely at the game before allowing it, rather than any claim about sexual or mature content.

The current rating and descriptors should be rechecked on your own storefront before you rely on them, because the listing can change.
