No sequel has been confirmed. The words “NieR:Automata to be continued…” appeared at the end of Square Enix’s February 20, 2026 anniversary video, but the message did not name a new game, platform, or release date. Producer Yosuke Saito later said he had requested the phrase while acknowledging he did not know whether there would be a continuation.
What did Square Enix announce?
The February 20, 2026 video marked NieR:Automata’s ninth anniversary and a reported milestone of 10 million copies sold. Its closing title card read “NieR:Automata to be continued…” Nintendo Life reported both the milestone and the wording, but the phrase was not accompanied by details identifying a project. That distinction matters: the video used language that suggests something will carry on, but it did not announce “NieR:Automata 2” or confirm a direct sequel. It also gave no release window or platform. The available statement could refer to a new game, another kind of NieR project, or continued franchise activity; the title card alone does not resolve which.
What did Yosuke Saito and Yoko Taro say?
Saito said he requested the phrase, not that a sequel was in production
In comments attributed to a Famitsu discussion and reported by GamesRadar+, NieR producer Yosuke Saito said: “I was the one who asked them to include that. I don’t know if there is a continuation or not, but I felt that ‘to be continued…’ was absolutely necessary for the [ninth-anniversary] video.” His comments confirm that the wording was deliberate, while explicitly leaving the existence of a continuation uncertain.

Saito also said, “To end on the ninth anniversary number is not a good stopping point, so I’d like to continue until the 10th anniversary.” That makes more anniversary activity a plausible reading of what may continue; it does not confirm a game. GamesRadar+’s report on the comments
Taro’s “milk it” remark was his guess
Director Yoko Taro reportedly offered this interpretation: “My guess is that I think the message is something like, ‘We’re still going to milk it, we’re going to make money.’” The words “my guess” are important: this was Taro’s personal reading, not Square Enix’s official explanation or confirmation of a particular product.

Could “continued” mean something besides a sequel?
Yes. NieR has appeared beyond console games, including stage productions, novels, manga, anime, merchandise, and crossovers. In that context, “to be continued” is broad enough to cover several kinds of activity. Those are possible formats, not announced projects.
- A new mainline game or spin-off: possible, but neither was specified.
- A port or release on another platform: not identified by the anniversary message.
- Another medium, collaboration, or merchandise: consistent with the franchise’s history, but no specific new item was named.
- More anniversary activity: compatible with Saito’s stated interest in continuing through the 10th anniversary, but not a promise of a particular event or release.
What is known about the sales milestone?
Nintendo Life reported that the anniversary video marked 10 million copies sold. The same outlet noted that the game had previously been reported at nine million units in December 2024. These are dated figures reported by Nintendo Life, not a current sales total independently established here. The outlet also reported that the Nintendo Switch edition arrived in 2022; that is historical context, not a statement about current regional availability.

When is the next NieR game coming out?
No date was given. The anniversary wording and the later remarks do not establish that a new game is in development, let alone provide a title, platform, or release window. The evidence supports saying that Square Enix used a deliberate teaser phrase and that Saito wants the series’ anniversary activity to continue—not that a sequel has been announced.

The existing NieR:Automata is the only direct game purchase identified by this announcement coverage. Nintendo Life reports a Nintendo Switch edition released in 2022; check regional availability before buying. The anniversary message does not identify a new game or other new product to purchase.
