Nintendo’s net sales fell 30.3% in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, to ¥1,164.9 billion. That was a full-year decline from ¥1,671.8 billion in FY2024—not a one-quarter drop. The fall came before Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025; in the following fiscal year, Nintendo reported ¥2,313.0 billion in net sales and 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold. Nintendo’s FY2026 results put the pre-launch slump and the launch-year rebound in context.
How much did Nintendo’s annual revenue decline?
Nintendo reported ¥1,164.9 billion in consolidated net sales for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, down 30.3% from ¥1,671.8 billion in the preceding fiscal year. “Revenue” is often used informally for this measure, but Nintendo calls it net sales. The comparison covers two full fiscal years, not calendar years or a single quarter. The figures were reported in GamesBeat’s coverage of Nintendo’s FY2025 results.

Why did Nintendo’s sales fall before Switch 2?
The decline coincided with the late stage of the original Switch’s platform cycle. Nintendo’s dedicated-platform business was down 30.9%, while original Switch hardware sales fell to 10.8 million units from 15.7 million in FY2024. Software sales also declined, to 155.4 million units from 199.67 million. Those comparisons support the platform-transition context, but they do not by themselves establish that one factor caused the entire net-sales decline.
The timing matters: Nintendo’s FY2025 ended before Switch 2’s launch. The figures describe the original Switch era immediately ahead of the successor’s arrival, rather than a year in which Switch 2 contributed to sales.

Was profit down by the same 30%?
No. Nintendo reported profit attributable to owners of the parent of ¥278.8 billion for FY2025, down 43.2% from ¥490.6 billion in FY2024. That is a different measure from net sales, and its larger percentage decline should not be described as a 30% revenue or sales drop.
What did Nintendo forecast for Switch 2 before launch?
At its May 8, 2025 financial results briefing, Nintendo forecast 15 million Switch 2 hardware units and 45 million software units for FY2026. Those were management forecasts, not actual results. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the hardware target aimed to match the original Switch’s sales over roughly the 10 months from its March 2017 launch through December. The forecast and explanation appear in Nintendo’s FY2025 results briefing.

When did Switch 2 launch, and what were the reported results?
Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Nintendo later reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold and ¥2,313.0 billion in overall net sales for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. The hardware figure exceeded the earlier 15-million forecast; it is a reported fiscal-year result, not the forecast repeated as an outcome. Nintendo’s FY2026 operating-results report provides the annual figures.
Separately, Nintendo reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold through to consumers in the first four days after launch. In its first-quarter FY2026 report, Nintendo defines sell-through as sales to consumers through retailers and direct sales, distinguishing it from sell-in volume. This launch-window measure is not directly comparable to a full fiscal-year total.
