Short answer: If you already own a Nintendo Switch 2, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is an easy recommendation for fans who want the most modern version of the classic. Nintendo says the remake is built from the ground up with overhauled visuals, voiced scenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, modern camera movement and new gameplay systems. A hands-on preview also reports substantial control and world improvements.
If you would purchase a Switch 2 only for this game, the decision is harder. The remake is exclusive to Switch 2, launches on November 5, 2026, and has a listed regular price of $84.99. You are therefore weighing a new console and an $84.99 game against your interest in the rest of the Switch 2 library. For most buyers in that position, waiting until the console has several must-play games is the financially safer choice.

What Nintendo is actually selling
This is not a resolution patch or a lightly enhanced port. Nintendo describes the project as “built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” Its official overview promises completely overhauled visuals, fully voiced cutscenes with expanded dialogue, full symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls and modern camera movements.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The underlying adventure remains recognizably Ocarina of Time: Link travels through Hyrule, grows from child to adult, learns songs and items, and follows the familiar story structure. The remake’s goal is to modernize how that adventure feels and looks rather than replace its identity with a different game.
That distinction matters when deciding whether the price is justified. If you want the historical N64 presentation preserved exactly, the new edition is deliberately not that. If you want the same landmark adventure with fewer 1998-era control assumptions and a more elaborate presentation, the scope is much larger than a cosmetic upgrade.
If you already own a Switch 2
Existing Switch 2 owners have the clearest purchase case: the decision is about whether the remake is worth its $84.99 software price, not whether a new console belongs in your budget.

- You want the definitive modern presentation of a game you already value.
- You prefer free camera control, on-demand jumping, gyro aiming and smoother item handling to the original control model.
- Voiced scenes, expanded dialogue and orchestral music sound more appealing than preserving the original audio presentation.
- You are interested in the new microphone and replay features rather than only replaying the original quest unchanged.
- You want to play in handheld, TV or tabletop mode on one system.
Reasons to wait
- You mainly want an exact historical version of the N64 game.
- You are comfortable with the original controls and do not care about new presentation features.
- $84.99 is high for a replay, especially if you have recently finished another version.
- You want independent confirmation of performance, image quality or the complete feature set. No final independent benchmark or review score is established yet.
For an existing owner, the remake is easiest to justify when the new presentation and controls are the point of the purchase. It is less compelling if your only goal is to experience the original game’s historical form.
If you would buy Switch 2 only for this game
Buying a console for one exclusive can make sense, but the calculation must include the hardware and software together. Nintendo has positioned this remake as a Switch 2 system seller: the game is not listed for the original Nintendo Switch.

The one-game calculation
Your minimum software commitment is the listed $84.99 price. The console cost is separate and varies by market, bundle and retailer; no single worldwide hardware price should be assumed here. Add any taxes, accessories and storage you would actually need. A Switch 2 purchase becomes easier to defend if you already expect to buy other Switch 2 software, because those additional games spread the hardware cost across a wider library.
Questions to answer before buying the console
- How many Switch 2 games do you already want? Write down specific titles rather than relying on the idea that a larger library will eventually arrive.
- Would you replay Ocarina of Time? A remake’s value is concentrated in repeat play, nostalgia and appreciation of presentation changes. A one-and-done curiosity offers less value at full price.
- Do modern controls matter to you? Free camera movement, jumping and gyro aiming are meaningful only if you prefer them to the original feel.
- Can your budget absorb the combined purchase? Do not treat the $84.99 software price as the whole cost of entry.
- Are you willing to wait for final reviews? The available hands-on coverage is a pre-release preview, not final technical testing.
If your written list contains only this game, waiting is sensible unless you are a particularly devoted Zelda or Ocarina of Time fan. If the list includes several Switch 2 exclusives you would buy soon, the remake can be one part of a reasonable platform purchase.
How different is it from the N64 version?
The story and recognizable Hyrule framework remain the foundation, but almost every layer surrounding the adventure is being modernized.
| Area | N64-era expectation | Switch 2 remake information |
|---|---|---|
| Visuals | The original low-resolution presentation and asset set | Nintendo says visuals are completely overhauled and built from the ground up for Switch 2 |
| Cutscenes and dialogue | Original text-led presentation | Fully voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue |
| Music | Original game soundtrack presentation | Full symphonic orchestral music |
| Camera | Locked or context-driven camera behavior | Modern camera movement; a preview reports free camera control |
| Movement | Original movement conventions | A preview reports that Link can jump on command |
| Aiming | Traditional stick-based aiming | Gyro controls are reported for the Slingshot and Hero’s Bow |
| Ocarina input | Button-selected songs | The Switch 2 microphone can recognize a hummed or played melody and make the in-game ocarina respond |
| Side content | Original activities and collectibles | Hall of Fallen Heroes adds monster information and rematches |
| World detail | Original Castle Town layout and activity level | A preview describes an expanded, livelier Castle Town |
The control and world details in the last four rows come from GamesRadar+ writer Andy Brown’s two-hour pre-release preview. They are useful hands-on observations, but they are not a final performance test or a universal assessment of every change.
Modern controls: what changes in practice
Free camera movement
The preview reports that the locked camera has been removed and that you can move the camera freely. This should make navigation, combat positioning and looking around Hyrule feel closer to current third-person games. It also changes the rhythm of familiar encounters: players who learned the N64 game around fixed camera angles may need to adjust their habits.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

On-demand jumping
Link can reportedly jump on command rather than relying only on contextual movement. That may make traversal more immediate, but it also changes how you read ledges, gaps and environmental puzzles. The remake can be more flexible without making every original obstacle irrelevant; the final game will determine how broadly the new move is used.
Recommended Free Tools
Gyro aiming
Gyro controls are reported for the Slingshot and Hero’s Bow. Players who like motion aiming can use small controller movements for fine adjustments, while those who prefer sticks can continue using conventional input. Nintendo has not stated that a separate professional-style controller is required; any optional controller purchase should be based on your comfort preferences, not as a prerequisite.
Smoother item switching
The preview describes item switching as smoother. That is a practical improvement during dungeon puzzles and combat, where repeatedly opening menus was part of the original friction. Because this is a preview observation, treat the exact interface and responsiveness as subject to the final release version.
New activities and features beyond presentation
Microphone-powered ocarina
Nintendo says you can hum a melody Link has learned or play it on an actual instrument. The Nintendo Switch 2 microphone hears the song and causes Link’s in-game ocarina to respond. This is a novel way to perform songs, but it should be viewed as an additional input method rather than a reason to assume every environment will be equally reliable. Background noise, microphone placement and how accurately a melody is played can affect any voice- or sound-recognition feature; Nintendo has not published a complete reliability specification.
Hall of Fallen Heroes
The Hall of Fallen Heroes provides monster information and rematches. It gives players a dedicated place to review enemies and fight them again, which can support experimentation, practice and completion-focused play. Nintendo has not published a complete list of encounters or rewards, so do not treat it as a guaranteed replacement for every optional activity from the original game.

Zelda Notes
Zelda Notes is described as a service in the Nintendo Switch App. The available information identifies the service and its relationship to the game, but does not establish that every feature works without a phone, an internet connection or an account. If you want to use Zelda Notes, check the final setup instructions for your region and the Nintendo Switch App version at launch.
Amiibo rewards
Existing Zelda amiibo provide rewards. Nintendo also plans Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo for 2027 that unlock masks. Those figures are future collectibles, not launch-day requirements for playing the campaign. Availability and pricing for the 2027 releases have not been established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Modes, saves and playing away from the TV
Nintendo lists handheld, TV and tabletop modes. You can therefore choose a portable session, docked play or a tabletop setup with the console’s screen and controllers. The game is single-player on one system; no local multiplayer mode is listed.
Nintendo Switch Online save-data cloud is supported. That is useful for protecting progress and moving a save between compatible consoles under the service’s rules. Cloud support should not be confused with a requirement to play the main adventure online.
Handheld play is confirmed. Nintendo’s published feature list does not, in the available information, provide a definitive statement about every offline or online requirement, especially for companion features such as Zelda Notes. Plan on the core game being designed for normal single-player use, but verify the final packaging and support documentation if offline access is essential to you.

Physical or digital: which edition fits?
| Choice | Best for | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Physical edition | Players who want a disc-free? No—cartridge ownership, resale flexibility or a boxed collection | Nintendo lists a physical edition; verify regional stock, final price and preorder terms |
| Digital edition | Players who want immediate download access and no cartridge swapping | Confirm your console storage, account region, final digital price and download size before purchase |
Nintendo lists a physical edition, but regional availability and retailer inventory are volatile. Digital pricing can also differ by region and may not match the $84.99 regular price cited in Nintendo’s United States product information. Choose based on how you manage your library rather than assuming one format has better game content.
A practical buying decision
Buy at launch if all of these are true
- You already own Switch 2 or were planning to buy it for several games.
- You value a rebuilt presentation instead of an exact N64 reproduction.
- The listed $84.99 price fits your budget.
- You want to try the free camera, jumping, gyro aiming or microphone ocarina.
- You accept that final independent testing and review scores are not available yet.
Wait if any of these describe you
- You would buy the entire console only for this one game.
- You mainly want the original game’s unchanged audiovisual style.
- You need confirmed final performance data before purchasing.
- You are waiting for a discount, a bundle or clearer information about Zelda Notes and other add-ons.
- You are unsure whether you will replay a familiar adventure after the novelty wears off.
Wait for reviews, then decide
Final reviews should answer questions the preview cannot: how stable performance is across handheld and TV modes, how consistently the microphone recognizes melodies, whether the new camera creates any frustrating encounters, how extensive the Hall of Fallen Heroes is, and whether the expanded dialogue improves the story’s pacing. Those are legitimate reasons to delay a purchase without assuming the remake will disappoint.
What is not established yet
No independent completion-time statistic, final review score, published benchmark or measured performance test is available in the information currently established for this release. Nintendo’s feature and price statements are official; the camera, movement, Castle Town and control observations come from a two-hour pre-release preview. Retailer discounts, stock, regional prices, preorder bonuses and final software details can change.

Verdict
For Switch 2 owners: buy The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo Switch 2 if you want a ground-up visual and audio remake with modern controls and new systems. Nintendo’s announced scope, plus the previewed free camera, jumping, gyro aiming and expanded Castle Town, makes this substantially more than a simple port.
For everyone else: do not buy a Switch 2 solely because one familiar game is launching on it unless you are comfortable paying for the hardware and already know you want the remake at $84.99. Make the console worthwhile with a broader Switch 2 library, then treat Ocarina of Time as a major reason to own the system rather than the only reason.
