PlayStation Plus is not required just because a game was downloaded. What matters is the license: a game you bought or own on disc is different from a monthly game claimed through Plus or a title downloaded from the Extra or Premium catalog. When your membership ends, Plus-based access ends; an owned purchase does not become a Plus game simply because you downloaded it.
Which kind of downloaded game is it?
Check how you got the game before troubleshooting a lock or deciding whether to renew. A download is just the installed data; it does not tell you what grants the account permission to play.

Sony describes monthly games as available at no extra cost during a PlayStation Plus membership. What happens when you cancel or your subscription expires?
Requesting cancellation and reaching the end of the paid membership period are not the same event. Sony says benefits continue until the already-paid period ends. When membership actually expires, Plus benefits such as monthly games, online storage, and online multiplayer end; previously claimed monthly games become unavailable. That change affects the entitlement, not necessarily the installed files. If you renew, eligible monthly games can become playable again. For an Extra or Premium catalog game, however, you also need the title to remain in the catalog. If you want to keep playing a particular catalog title regardless of membership, check whether it is available to buy separately in your region.
Can you play Extra or Premium catalog games offline?
Sony’s PlayStation Blog guide, published May 23, 2022, says downloaded catalog games can be played offline, but the console must connect to PSN every seven days to validate membership and maintain access. That is a dated service statement, not a guarantee that every game or current regional term behaves identically. What if the game is owned but online multiplayer is locked?
Owning the game and having access to its online multiplayer are separate questions. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, with exceptions. Check the multiplayer requirement on that game’s PlayStation Store page; do not assume Plus is needed for every online game or every mode. What happens to DLC when a catalog game leaves?
Sony’s May 23, 2022 guide says add-ons associated with a downloaded catalog game are unavailable if the membership expires or the game leaves the catalog, until you resubscribe or buy the game. This guidance concerns add-ons tied to the catalog game; it does not establish that independently purchased DLC for an independently owned game is lost. Why does a game show a padlock?
A padlock does not by itself prove that Plus expired. Sony lists license problems unrelated to membership expiry among situations where restoring licenses may help. First check which account obtained the game, whether that account’s membership is active if the game depends on Plus, and whether the catalog title is still available. If those checks do not resolve it, restore licenses:
- On PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- On PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
