Oblivion Remastered: the case for returning to Cyrodiil
A familiar adventure with a modern presentation
Bethesda describes Remastered as the complete Oblivion story experience with refreshed visuals, refined gameplay and quality-of-life updates. The setting remains Cyrodiil, and the narrative remains the adventure first released in 2006. If you specifically want that province, its factions and its story rather than a new Dragonborn campaign, the remaster is the direct route.
“Remastered” matters here because the appeal is reconstruction, not a sequel. The visual update is intended to make the original world easier to approach on current hardware, while the gameplay refinements address friction in the older design. Official material also identifies a redesigned leveling system inspired by both Oblivion and Skyrim. That makes progression a meaningful point of difference: Remastered is trying to preserve Oblivion’s identity while borrowing ideas that modern players may recognize from Skyrim.
The included story expansions
Bethesda’s Switch 2 announcement describes the complete adventure as including Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. Those additions are part of the package described for the remastered release, so you are not choosing between a bare main game and a separate expansion hunt when evaluating that edition.

Choose Skyrim when the idea of discovering your abilities through Shouts, fighting dragons and shaping a character from many available tools is more attractive than returning to Oblivion’s specific campaign. What Anniversary Edition contains
The Anniversary Edition includes Skyrim Special Edition, the three official add-ons Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn, plus Creation Club content. Bethesda’s 2021 description says the package contains more than 500 unique Creation Club content items. That is a count of items supplied by the publisher; it is not a claim of 500 quests, 500 hours or 500 equally substantial adventures.

The upgrade distinction

Skyrim’s broad character toolkit
Bethesda’s Skyrim feature article foregrounds a free-form approach: choose weapons, spells and abilities, combine them with dual-wielding, use Shouts and develop crafting. This makes Skyrim the clearer fit if you want to define a play style through a wide menu of tools rather than follow a more specific archetype.
That flexibility does not mean you must master every system. It means the game’s official design pitch gives you multiple ways to construct and revise a character. The relevant question is whether that breadth is appealing, not whether it creates a provably superior build system.

Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls site listed an Oblivion Remastered physical edition as available on October 13, 2026. That date does not guarantee that every retailer has stock or that every platform uses identical packaging. Check the exact store listing for your console or PC format before ordering.
Skyrim Anniversary Edition availability
Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page lists Xbox, PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The page also distinguishes the complete edition from the upgrade for Special Edition owners. Platform storefronts can name these options differently, so read whether the listing says “full edition” or “upgrade” before checkout.
Availability and included features can change with platform releases, patches and regional listings. A store page that does not mention a feature is not proof that the feature is absent everywhere; it is a reason to verify the edition for your specific platform.

How much content should you expect?
Skyrim has the only publisher-stated quantity in the cited official material: more than 500 unique Creation Club content items in Anniversary Edition. The number is useful for understanding the bundle’s breadth, but it cannot be converted into a reliable number of quests or hours. Items vary in scope, and no apples-to-apples published playtime comparison was established between Skyrim Anniversary Edition and Oblivion Remastered.

For Oblivion Remastered, the defensible content statement is that the package presents the complete Oblivion adventure and identifies Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine as included in the complete experience described for Switch 2. Do not infer equal length, equal quest counts or equal value from the two bundle descriptions; the official sources do not provide those comparisons.
Cost, upgrades and purchase value
The official material does not establish a single worldwide price for either game. Store prices can differ by platform, region, sales period and physical availability, so compare the current listing rather than relying on an old advertised price. The most important cost distinction is Skyrim’s ownership requirement: the cheaper-looking Anniversary upgrade is intended for someone who already owns Special Edition, while a new player needs the full Anniversary Edition listing.
