Rockstar has not confirmed a separate enhanced version of Red Dead Redemption 2 in the official statements cited here. The company has said the existing PS4 and Xbox One versions are playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. That is not confirmation of a native current-generation release, a 60 fps update, or an upgrade offer.
What has Rockstar confirmed about RDR2 on current consoles?
In a November 6, 2020 announcement, Rockstar said the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 would be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. The statement concerns the existing console versions; it does not announce a separate RDR2 edition. Rockstar’s backward-compatibility announcement is the relevant official confirmation.

Rockstar’s original launch post said RDR2 would arrive on PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018. Its eighth anniversary is October 26, 2026. The game follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang after a robbery goes wrong, as they flee across America while divisions grow within the gang. Rockstar’s launch announcement gives the release date and premise.
What remains unconfirmed?
The cited Rockstar statements do not establish a native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version, a new performance or resolution mode, Switch 2 support, a release date, or whether an upgrade would be free or paid. Claims about 60 fps, 4K, or an upgrade window should not be presented as confirmed RDR2 features.

In October 2025, GameSpot reported that insider NateTheHate2 said versions for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 were still planned, but that he had no timing update. This is secondary reporting of an unconfirmed claim, not a Rockstar announcement; it does not confirm a launch date or final features. GameSpot’s report attributes the claim to the insider.
Why are 60 fps and 4K details being mixed up?
Rockstar separately announced console enhancements for the original Red Dead Redemption, the 2010 game. Its announcement includes 60 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, improved image quality, HDR, and resolutions up to 4K. Those specifications apply to that game, not to Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar’s announcement for the original Red Dead Redemption describes those enhancements.

- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
What can you play now?
If you want to play RDR2 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar’s documented option is the existing PS4 or Xbox One release running through backward compatibility. Identify it as the current release, not an enhanced edition. The cited announcement describes access for compatible disc and digital owners; check the relevant console’s compatibility and account requirements for your copy.

What to check if Rockstar announces an enhanced edition
A real upgrade announcement should specify the details that affect whether it is worth waiting for or buying again:
- Which platforms are supported, and whether a Switch 2 version is included.
- Frame-rate and resolution targets, plus any image-quality or HDR changes.
- Whether saves transfer and whether cross-generation play or continuity is supported.
- Whether existing owners get a free upgrade, pay for an upgrade, or need to buy a new edition.
- The release date and any region-specific availability.
Until Rockstar or an official platform listing confirms those points, rumor reports are not a substitute for an announced product or feature set.
