Red Dead Redemption 2 is worth playing before Grand Theft Auto VI if you want a slow-building, character-led Western and have time for a substantial open-world story. It is not required preparation for GTA 6: Rockstar’s official descriptions present separate stories, and the GTA 6 material reviewed does not say you need to know RDR2.
What is Red Dead Redemption 2 about?
Set in 1899, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang as they flee after the Blackwater robbery goes wrong. Rockstar describes the gang as facing growing internal divisions that force Arthur to weigh his ideals against loyalty to the people who raised him. That premise makes the game a character-driven Western, rather than a direct lead-in to GTA 6. Rockstar’s product page lists the game’s release date as October 26, 2018.

The game’s appeal depends heavily on whether you enjoy its setting and deliberate pace. If you want a Western story centered on a changing gang and its relationships, RDR2 is a strong fit. If you dislike slower narratives or mainly want more modern crime action, playing it before GTA 6 may not be worth the time.

Is RDR2 connected to GTA 6, or necessary to understand it?
No story prerequisite is identified in the official material reviewed. Rockstar’s GTA 6 page describes Jason and Lucia and a criminal conspiracy in Leonida; it does not say that understanding Arthur Morgan’s story is necessary. Rockstar’s synopsis says, “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them.” The two games have different settings and protagonists, so treat RDR2 as its own story rather than homework for GTA 6. Rockstar’s GTA 6 page currently lists a November 19, 2026 release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

How to decide whether to play it first
- Play RDR2 first if a historical Western, a character-led plot, and a substantial open-world adventure sound appealing in their own right.
- Skip it for now if you are short on time or do not enjoy deliberately paced Western stories. You will not be missing an established story prerequisite for GTA 6.
- Check your platform before buying. Rockstar’s GTA 6 launch platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. RDR2 has console editions, and Take-Two announced its PC release in 2019; that announcement is not a guarantee of present availability on every storefront. Take-Two’s PC release announcement described PC-specific technical enhancements and said Red Dead Online was included with that release.
- Check edition contents and regional availability on the relevant storefront. Rockstar’s PlayStation 4 store listing includes Story Mode and Red Dead Online in the base edition, while its Ultimate Edition adds bonus missions, outfits, ranks, and other items. That listing does not establish availability or contents for every platform or region. Rockstar’s store page shows the listed editions.
What to expect from editions and playtime
The listed base edition includes both Story Mode and Red Dead Online. Rockstar also lists Red Dead Online separately and offers an Ultimate Edition with additional content, but check the store for your platform and region before choosing. The available official information does not establish a reliable playtime figure, so there is no precise time estimate to use when deciding whether it fits before GTA 6.

Launch timing and platform details can change; check the official page for the latest announcement. Its launch platform set is not the same as RDR2’s full range of editions, so verify compatibility for the system you own.
