Renegade Raider is scarce in the sense that it began as a 2017 outfit and is closely associated with Fortnite’s early days, but it is not permanently exclusive: Epic brought it back in the OG Season Shop in December 2024. The Black & Gold style is a separate distinction reserved for players who bought the outfit in its original 2017 release. Meanwhile, Epic retired the old cosmetic color-and-name tiers in 2024, so “Rare” or “Legendary” should not be treated as a current official rating for the outfit.
Why Renegade Raider has a reputation for rarity
Renegade Raider first appeared in Chapter 1 Season 1 in 2017. Its early availability helped make it a recognizable marker of Fortnite’s first era, and that history continues to shape how players talk about it. But past scarcity and permanent exclusivity are not the same thing: Epic later brought the outfit back.
Epic’s December 19, 2024 announcement said Renegade Raider and other original items had been available in Chapter 1 Season 1 in 2017, and announced their return in the OG Season Shop. That return means it is inaccurate to describe the outfit itself as something only original owners can ever obtain.
When did Renegade Raider come back?
Epic announced Renegade Raider’s return to the OG Season Shop in December 2024. That establishes a past return, not whether the outfit is in the shop now or when it might appear again. Epic says the Item Shop rotates and that absent items may return, but it does not guarantee a date for any particular cosmetic. Check Fortnite’s live shop for current availability; Epic Support cannot grant an item that is not currently offered there.

Who gets the Black & Gold style?
The Black & Gold style is not simply included with any later purchase of Renegade Raider. Epic Support says it is for accounts that purchased the outfit during its original 2017 release. Eligible accounts receive the style automatically when they log in.
This creates two different ownership histories: the outfit returned to the shop, while the Black & Gold style remains tied to the original 2017 purchase. Owning the outfit after its return does not, by itself, meet that original-purchase requirement.

Is Renegade Raider officially “Rare” or “Legendary”?
Epic announced on April 9, 2024 that it was retiring the old Battle Royale-inspired color and tag system for cosmetic quality. The company said, “we’re retiring the old Battle Royale-inspired system of colors and tags for cosmetic quality.” It retained Series labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series, but the old color-tier names should not be presented as a current official rarity rating.
Players may still use “rare” informally to describe an outfit’s history or perceived scarcity. That community shorthand is different from a current official tier, and it does not establish how many accounts own the outfit. Epic’s cited announcements provide no ownership percentage or other numeric measure of its rarity.

How to think about availability claims
- “It was originally released in 2017” describes the outfit’s history, not an exclusive ownership rule.
- “It returned in December 2024” confirms a past shop appearance, not current availability.
- “It will return again” is not established by the shop’s general rotation policy; Epic gives no guaranteed date for a particular item.
- “The Black & Gold style is original-owner only” refers to the 2017 purchase requirement, not to whether the outfit itself returned.
- “It is officially Rare or Legendary” relies on the retired color-and-name system, rather than a current official quality tier.
Does a V-Bucks gift card give you Renegade Raider?
No. A V-Bucks gift card provides account credit for eligible purchases; it does not contain or grant the outfit, guarantee that it is currently available, or promise a future return. Epic lists V-Bucks and cosmetics among purchases available through Fortnite’s in-game store and Web Shop. Before buying a card, check its region, redemption terms and the live shop listing for the item you want.
