Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has a credible case as one of 2025’s standout games: Metacritic’s current snapshot gives it an 87 from 58 critic reviews, and TechRadar ranked it 11th on its own top-20 games of 2025 list. That makes “GOTY contender” a fair description of its reception—not evidence of a formal industry-wide nomination or award.
How strong is the game’s critical reception?
Metacritic currently displays an 87 Metascore from 58 critic reviews, with 56 positive, two mixed, and none negative. This is the page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, and may change as the aggregate updates. Metacritic’s critic page also includes strong individual reviews: Atomix and PlayStation Universe each gave it 95. Atomix called it “one of the best games of the year,” while PlayStation Universe praised its hand-drawn art and kinetic combat.
Those scores sit alongside a separate, earlier figure: SEGA said the game had a 90 Metascore on launch day, August 29, 2025, based on the Xbox version score at that time. That dated platform-specific announcement is not the same measure as Metacritic’s current aggregate across critic reviews.
What does “GOTY contender” mean here?
The clearest year-end list placement in the available coverage is TechRadar Gaming’s: it ranked Shinobi: Art of Vengeance number 11 in its top 20 games of 2025, published December 19, 2025. That is TechRadar’s editorial ranking, not an industry-wide award result. The reviewed evidence does not establish a formal Game of the Year nomination or win.

So the claim is best read as a judgment about quality and year-end recognition. An 87 aggregate and a top-20 placement support calling it a contender in conversation about the year’s best games, while leaving room for different outlets and awards bodies to reach different conclusions. TechRadar’s year-end list described it as an essential play for action-platformer fans.
What kind of game is it?
SEGA describes it as an all-new 2D action platformer created by Lizardcube. Players control Joe Musashi on a revenge quest. Its appeal comes from the combination of movement, close-range combat, and a vivid presentation rather than from sprawling exploration.

Combat and movement
TechRadar’s review highlights platforming, light puzzle-solving, melee combos, kunai, and Ninpo. Its praise centers on the feel of moving and fighting: the game offers tools for chaining attacks and dealing with enemies while navigating stages. TechRadar’s review characterizes the structure as more linear and arcade-like, with only light metroidvania elements.
Level design and challenge
Not every reviewer was equally taken with the stages. GamesRadar+ found some areas bland or frustrating and criticized hazard encounters that could feel inconsistent. That contrast matters: players drawn primarily to responsive combat and striking presentation may be more forgiving of uneven stages, while those who want consistently precise platforming and varied level layouts may be less satisfied. GamesRadar+’s review gives that counterpoint.

Is it worth playing?
If you enjoy 2D action-platformers, stylish combat, and a relatively direct arcade-like structure, the critical response makes Shinobi: Art of Vengeance an easy game to consider. Its year-end standing is supported by both the Metacritic aggregate and TechRadar’s ranking, while reviews point to a specific trade-off: the combat and movement can shine even when some stages or hazards do not.
GamesRadar+ estimated a roughly ten-hour story in its review. Treat that as one reviewer’s playthrough estimate, not an official completion-time guarantee; individual times will vary with pace and play style.

Platforms and physical editions
SEGA lists the August 29, 2025 release for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. The publisher’s product information explicitly rules out physical versions for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. A Nintendo Switch retail edition is a plausible physical-copy route, but check the specific retailer listing for format, region, edition, and current stock before buying.
