If you use Forge, the compatible alternative depends on your Minecraft version: Embeddium lists Forge builds for 1.20.1 and older, while Beddium’s Forge branch describes support for 1.21 and newer. Can you use Sodium with Forge?

Which Forge alternative matches your Minecraft version?
Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1 or older
Embeddium lists Forge availability for Minecraft 1.20.1 and older. The project describes itself as based on the last FOSS-licensed version of Sodium, with additional bug fixes and mod-compatibility features. Select a release that explicitly matches both your Minecraft version and Forge.
Forge on Minecraft 1.21 or newer
Beddium’s Forge branch describes itself as an unofficial Embeddium fork supporting these versions. Check the branch’s releases for a file matching your exact game version and loader; do not assume a matching release exists for every version.

If you meant NeoForge
NeoForge is a different loader from standard Forge. If your Minecraft profile or modpack uses NeoForge, consult Sodium’s NeoForge files and support policy rather than downloading a Forge alternative.
How to choose and install the right file
- Check the Minecraft version and loader in the game profile or modpack settings.
- For standard Forge on 1.20.1 or older, look for a matching Embeddium Forge release.
- For standard Forge on 1.21 or newer, check Beddium’s Forge branch for a matching release.
- For NeoForge, use Sodium’s NeoForge listing and confirm the file matches your game version.
- Download only a file explicitly marked for both your Minecraft version and loader. Avoid combining competing rendering mods unless their project documentation says the combination is supported.
Why the loader label matters
Mods are built for particular loader and game-version combinations. Forge, NeoForge, and Fabric should not be treated as interchangeable: a mod file for one loader may not load on another. Sodium’s support policy also states, “Sodium comes with no warranty or implied fitness for any particular task.”
