Rocksteady described Batman: Arkham Knight’s Gotham as roughly five times the size of the area in Batman: Arkham City. That is an approximate relative comparison, not an official square-mile or square-kilometer measurement. The larger map was also designed for different movement: wider roads for the Batmobile and taller buildings for more vertical traversal.
How much bigger is Arkham Knight’s map?
In a 2014 interview, Rocksteady representative Guy Perkins said Gotham was “five times larger” than the area in Arkham City. International Business Times UK reported Perkins’s comparison. Guinness World Records later gave the same figure in its 2015 record entry for the game. Guinness World Records’ entry corroborates the claim.

Read “five times” as Rocksteady’s approximate comparison of the explorable areas, not as a surveyed ratio. The cited sources do not give an official area in square miles or square kilometers, nor a measurement method or precision range.
What does the three-island layout mean?
Rocksteady representative Gaz Deaves said that the island shown in a demonstration was about the size of Arkham City, with two more islands and large interior environments also available to explore. GamesRadar’s preview reports his description. It refers to that demonstrated island; it does not establish that every island is individually the same size as Arkham City.

A 2016 scholarly article likewise describes Gotham as a three-island layout and repeats the rough five-times comparison. The article on ResearchGate also discusses the city’s wider streets and taller buildings. Together, these details help explain the scale claim without supplying an official absolute area.

The comparison is about more than footprint. Perkins said the roads were made wider to accommodate the Batmobile, while the buildings were taller and the city “much more vertical.” Those design choices change how the space is traversed: players drive along broader roads and move through a taller skyline, rather than simply covering more ground on foot.

So the useful takeaway is that Arkham Knight offers a much larger, differently designed play space, but the available figures do not support a precise area calculation or a claim that every island matches Arkham City.
